Salford City have called on a sixth member of the Class of '92 to help inspire them to the Football League.

Chris Casper, one of the forgotten names of Manchester United's legendary youth team, has been brought in as Salford's sporting director.

The 42-year-old never maintained his place in the United first-team, leaving in 1998 before being forced into retirement through injuries just two years later, aged 24.

He went on to manage Bury, before holding backroom positions at Bradford City and Grimsby Town.

Casper has been one of the men behind a ruthless summer recruitment drive at Salford , which has seen 12 new additions join the club.

Salford, who started life as a professional football club this week, were forced into a radical overhaul of their squad as they looked for players to make the switch from part-time to full-time.

Some members of last season's squad, who reached the National League North play-offs, were not offered deals.

Meanwhile, some players who were handed two-year contracts only last month - worth between £30,000 and £35,000-a-year - are fearing that they are already being made surplus to requirements.

Numerous members of the squad quit full-time jobs to sign professional deals with Salford.

The ambitious Ammies aim to get to the Football League within the next four years - and say that anything other than winning the National League North title this year is a failure.

Joint-owners Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Gary and Phil Neville brought Casper in during the back end of last season and has worked alongside management duo Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley on recruitment.

Casper is also heading a new youth development programme, Academy '92, where players train alongside the first-team squad.

Speaking on a promotional video, Gary Neville admitted that Salford needed to be stronger in the transfer market this summer.

Neville said: "In the past two or three years, I think it is safe to say that we have been a little slow, tried to wait a little bit and not be quite as aggressive as we could have been.

"I think we maybe suffered a little bit with that, by not being as proactive as we could have been."

Salford head into the National League North season as the bookmakers' favourites to win the division.

The redevelopment of their Moor Lane home, which has seen all four sides of the ground renovated, is expected to be completed early in the season.

However, it is unlikely to be fully completed for the visits of Darlington, Stockport County and Kidderminster Harriers at the start of the new campaign, all of whom have large away followings.
