Teddy Sheringham believes a Premier League club can end England’s six-year drought in the Champions League .

Chelsea were the last from these shores to win the most prized competition in European club football when they beat Bayern Munich on penalties in 2012.

Manchester City , Chelsea and Tottenham are into the knockout stages of this season’s tournament, while Manchester United and Liverpool can seal their last-16 places this week.

And Sheringham, who knows all about winning the Champions League, reckons the trophy will be coming back to Blighty once more.

The former England striker, who won it with Manchester United in 1999, said: “What you need is that ability to dig in, to get a result when it seems you are going to lose. We had that twice at United.

“We were losing to Juventus at home in the semi-final first leg and Ryan Giggs levelled it. We were 2-0 down in the second leg, but won the match 3-2. And we all know what happened in the final. It’s what you get for never giving in.”

And of the English clubs, he said: “Man City are looking so good at the moment.

“OK, so they don’t have a superstar like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo , but they have good players and power up front. And they have shown in the last two matches that they have that ability to grind out a result. It is that kind of attitude you need at times in Europe.

“As for United, their manager Jose Mourinho is a proven winner.

“Chelsea also have a manager with a great record. They have experience, with players like Cesc Fabregas, and they also have front players who can get those vital goals.

“Tottenham drew away with Real Madrid and beat them at home. Not bad, is it? They now have a year’s experience in the Champions League and that is showing. They look more accomplished this season and they have match-winners like Dele Alli and Harry Kane .

“Liverpool look formidable up front. They may have defensive deficiencies, but, if they can put that right, they will be a threat. I can see one of that lot winning the Champions League.”

And Sheringham does not rule out the prospect of a Euro double, with Arsenal winning the Europa League .

“It is a competition that brings Champions League football for the winners, like for United.

Arsenal can do the same with the squad they have.”
