Wenger: No sympathy for Liverpool over Sterling departure

Arsene Wenger has warned Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: You'll miss Raheem Sterling this season.

England winger Sterling was prised away from Anfield by Manchester City for £49million last month after a bitter public battle between the club and the player’s agent.

Despite this summer’s signings of £29m Roberto Firmino and £32.5m Christian Benteke - whose goal sealed the points against Bournemouth last Monday - Wenger believes Sterling’s absence will still be felt on Merseyside this season.

Before the Reds' Monday night visit to the Emirates, the Arsenal boss said: “I personally rate Raheem Sterling. We will see that in the longer term.

"I personally don’t think that Sterling was making a lot of drama. It’s just during the transfer window that that happened."

Wenger, no stranger to seeing his own best players leave for bigger clubs, added: “Liverpool is in a position they can make their own decisions. They refused to sell us Suarez, so I cannot feel too much sympathy for them.”

Bellerin faster than Walcott

Hector Bellerin is Gunner go down in history after outpacing Theo Walcott to become as Arsenal's fastest-ever player - again.

The 20-year-old Spanish full-back beat Walcott's 40m sprint record of 4.78sec set by one hundredth of a second last season after the England star had dethroned club legend Thierry Henry two years ago.

And now Bellerin has revealed he's beaten Walcott again this year - but he can't remember his time.

"Everyone keeps telling me different numbers," he told The Sun. "But I know I beat Theo by literally one hundredth of a second after he had beaten Thierry, so you can do the maths.

"It was very close last year but this year I beat Theo by more of a distance. He won't tell you that, though!"

Karim Benzema is ready to join Arsenal from Real Madrid, according to The Daily Star.

With the Gunners reportedly preparing a bid for the Frenchman, Arsene Wenger is hopeful of a deal being completed before next Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Madrid are unwilling to entertain any offers of less than £50m for their star striker.

The Gunners are yet to spend big this summer, but could end up shattering their transfer record to sign the 27-year-old.

Arsene Wenger has revealed he is open to taking a gamble during the final nine days of the summer transfer window, The London Evening Standard report.

"There is always time to take a gamble and we are not against taking a gamble," Wenger said. "But what you want is to take a gamble in a market where the opportunity is there.

"I believe this squad is ready to fight for the title and has a chance to do it given that we are continuing to develop as a team.

"That is the first thing. Internally we have the resources to do that and it is also important that we don’t have too many major injuries like last year."
