Arsene Wenger's transfer plans have been dealt a big blow after Leon Goretzka decided to sign for Barcelona instead.

The Schalke star had been earmarked as a potential replacement for Mesut Ozil, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Goretzka is also free to discuss a move in January as he enters the final six months of his contract at the Veltins Arena.

Manchester City, Liverpool, Italian champions Juventus and Bundesliga top dogs Bayern Munich have also shown an interest in the 22-year-old German international, who started his career at Bochum.

Schalke have refused to give up hope of keeping him at the club and have tabled improved terms.

However, Barcelona have stolen a march on their rivals and the player has already held talks with the Catalans.

SportBild claim Goretzka has made it clear he wants to move to the Nou Camp when his deal is up.
