Bayern Munich's flirting with Alexis Sanchez may be over, according to a report in Germany.

The Chilean's agent was in Bavaria this week but Bild claim hefty wage demands are more than the club is willing to entertain.

There isn't a huge amount in it, in relative terms, with Bayern's roof of £268,000-a-week compared to the £300,000-a-week that he wants.

After a season of speculation, Sanchez could after all be at the Emirates to help lead their bid to return to the Champions League next season.

Mertesacker is in line for a dramatic return to Arsenal's back line because Laurent Koscielny is suspended, Gabriel Paulista is out for two months with damaged medial knee ligaments and Shkrodan Mustafi has yet to resume training after suffering concussion nine days ago.

The German World Cup winner only made his first appearance of the season, after major knee surgery last summer, when he came off the bench in Sunday's 3-1 win against Everton.

Merteacker, 32, said: “I haven't played this year, but I used to do this for 15 years so I expect myself to be ready, no matter what comes around.

“I'm going to go for it. That's my mindset because I owe it to this team and the club. Whatever happens and whoever is facing me on Saturday, I want to make sure I am 100 per cent ready – for 120 minutes plus penalties.
