Arsenal are preparing a £52million double swoop for for Granit Xhaka and Adrien Rabiot, according to reports.

The Daily Star claim Arsene Wenger is ready to splurge £37million on Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Xhaka and £20million PSG man Rabiot.

Wenger has reportedly stepped up his interest in the duo after learning of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's desire to stay at Borussia Dortmund.

The Gunners were expected to bid in excess of £40million for the Gabonese striker but could instead use those funds to bid for Xhaka, 23, and Rabiot, 20, instead.

Wenger hails youngsters

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed the performances of three of his young players in the Gunners' win over Sunderland, writes MirrorFootball's Liam Corless.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex Iwobi and Hector Bellerin all started for Wenger's side in the FA Cup third-round tie at the Emirates.

And the Frenchman talked up his young charges after the impressive win.

"Bellerin became stronger and stronger," Wenger said. "Sometimes I felt in the last 20 minutes, every time he went forward he created a chance on goal.

"Alex Iwobi was one of the guys who was very good in the first half, he tired a little bit in the second half."

Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled for confidence and consistency this season but he delivered a bright performance in the Gunners' midfield.

"He came on stronger as the game went on and in the second half he was strong," Wenger said.

Wenger praises mentally focused side

Five changes, three goals and a place in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Things are ticking over nicely these days at Arsenal .

They moved through the gears to ease past sorry Sunderland and it will once again take a very good side - or a massive shock - to loosen the Gunners’ grip on the trophy they retained last May, writes MirrorFootball's Darren Lewis.

It is also quite something that the club’s fans continue calling for more signings - and that Wenger continues to target more players - when he has so many options at his disposal.

How injury-hit Jurgen Klopp would have loved to be able to slot in a Gabriel at centre-half, a Kieran Gibbs at left-back, a Joel Campbell on the right and the highly-promising Alex Iwobi in attack when Liverpool played Exeter on Friday night.

Arsenal will find that a far more experienced, albeit patched-up, side awaits them when they travel to Anfield on Wednesday night.

With the Gunners defeated just once in their last ten games in all competitions, however - winning eight and drawing the other - there is a momentum building in N5.

“Once you’re on a roll, you can rotate if you have no injuries,” said Wenger. “Everybody is mentally focused to pull in the same direction."

Wenger believes Liverpool crocks will recover to play Gunners

Arsene Wenger is convinced he will be the miracle cure that ensures Liverpool field a strong team against Arsenal on Wednesday, writes MirrorFootball's Darren Lewis.

Goals from Joel Campbell, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud helped the Gunners to see off Sunderland and ease into the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Wenger is expecting Jurgen Klopp’s injury-ravaged Reds, however, to find the strength to provide a far tougher test on Wednesday night.

“Don’t worry!” said the Arsenal boss. “Arsene is a very good doctor! They always heal when they play against us!”

Asked whether he was surprised at Liverpool’s severely under-strength team, held at Exeter in their third round tie on Friday night, Wenger added: “No.

“They had many injures and I think they didn’t want more injuries before an important week.

“The team who played last night is not the team who will play against us.”
