Jack Wilshere fears he will have to quit Arsenal in January if he is to play in next summer's World Cup.

The 25-year-old has been overlooked by Gareth Southgate for his current England squad despite England’s midfield injury problems, after being told he is not getting enough game-time in the Premier League.

Wilshere got his hopes up for a Three Lions recall but, while manager Southgate has made checks on his fitness levels, he has now twice decided not to call him up because he is not starting regularly.

Loaned out last season to Bournemouth, Wilshere is desperate to play for Arsenal.

He has worked hard to try to get his place back and secure a future with the Gunners as his current deal expires at the end of this season.

But if there seems no way back for him at the Emirates, a clutch of clubs could look to see if they can tempt him to leave in the January window with the prospect of more games.

West Ham, Swansea and Spanish side Real Betis are all watching developments and could be ready to make a move, given any encouragement.

Wilshere would love to play for England again — it is hugely important to him.

He's back to full fitness and is impressing the Gunners' coaching staff with his levels, yet Arsene Wenger has not started him once in the Premier League this season.

Southgate may be prepared to give Wilshere another chance — but that will only happen if he is playing at club level.

The player hinted at the big call facing him when he told Sky Sports News: "I want to be playing for my country. I am a proud Englishman. But it is down to the manager [Southgate]. He didn't select me.

"He said I need more football. That is what I have got to do.

"I have got to take it on board, try to get into the Arsenal first team and hopefully I'll be selected. I have just come back to full fitness. I am happy with where I am, playing-wise. I am trying to get into the Premier League team.

"At the moment I am concentrating on the now. The future will take care of itself. All I have got to do is stay fit and play my football. I want to stay at this club — I have said that many times."
