Antonio Conte has revealed Chelsea tried to beat Manchester City to Kyle Walker 's signature.

The Blues moved for the England right-back, 27, earlier this month but saw Tottenham sell to City instead.

Walker, who may eventually cost the Etihad outfit in the region of £54million, is one of three full-backs snapped up by Pep Guardiola this summer.

And Conte hinted the Premier League champions were unwilling to match City's offer for Walker — despite splashing the cash on new recruits Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayako and Alvaro Morata.

The Italian said: "If you want Walker, you know that Walker is expensive. We tried to buy Walker.

"Honestly, I think now every single player is expensive. For you to even enquire about one player, he is expensive.

"You go to buy a right-back, a left-back or a central defender and he is expensive.

"It is very difficult in the transfer market for the teams that need to improve their squads."

Conte, in Singapore on the second leg of Chelsea's Asia Tour, wants to sign at least three more players before the transfer window slams shut.
