Everton are closing in on a sensational deal to see Wayne Rooney return to Goodison Park.

The Toffees remain in talks with Manchester United for the switch, 13 years after Rooney left for OId Trafford.

Ronald Koeman has already forked out over £90million on his new recruits and spending won't stop there.

Jordan Pickford and Davy Klaassen arrived early in the window with deals for Michael Keane and Sandro Ramirez now finalised.

Koeman is also interested in Olivier Giroud and Gylfi Sigurdsson but Rooney would be the big name arrival.

And what of the futures of Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, who continue to be tipped to leave the club?

So how could Rooney fit into the new side?

New signings Pickford, Keane, Klaassen and Sandro will all expect to start in the new look line-up

It remains to be seen if the Tofees can get Sigurdsson, with Swansea holding out for close to £40million, but he would be key to Koeman's side.

Would Rooney and the Icelandic star fit into the same team?

Should Everton land Giroud, the Arsenal star would almost certainly come in and lead the line in place of Chelsea-bound Lukaku.

If Lukaku stays - and Sigurdsson arrives

As things stand, the Belgian striker appears to have played his last game for the club.

Lukaku has said returning to Goodison Park is 'not and option' after four seasons on Merseyside.

He wants a return to Chelsea but with Everton demanding around £100million for their talisman, it remains to be seen if the Premier League champions will cough up to land him.

Last summer, Lukaku was critical of Everton's failure to bring in new players but he can't have the same complaints this time around.

Could he lead the line with Rooney in behind?

In a front two

While Rooney has been used in a deep midfield role for club and country, his best position is almost certainly further forward.

Given Ronald Koeman's outlay on Davy Klaassen and Morgan Schneiderlin, he would surely not be an option in midfield.

It remains to be seen what happens with Everton's striking situation but in Rooney and Sandro, they would already have an impressive partnership.

The duo could well start the Premier League season together.

Youth in the side

Everton's youngsters were at the heart of England U20's World Cup triumph this summer and will have bounced into Finch Farm when pre-season began.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin ended the season in the Everton side and can expect plenty more opportunities next term.

But for Jonjoe Kenny and Ademola Lookman, this season is an opportunity to really kick on at Goodison.

Kenny looks set to be in Koeman's plans with Coleman still out while Lookman will be given more game time following his January move from Charlton.

Tom Davies will have more competition for a midfield slot but with Everton in the Europa League, he'll have no complaints about a lack of action.

Rooney would be a huge inspiration for these youngsters and provide the winning mentality they need.
