It took him a while to influence the game as his team-mates dictated play initially, but Ivan Perisic shone against Chelsea to prove just why Manchester United want to splash close to £50m on him.

Initially it was the composure and control to hold the ball up and release Japanese full-back Yuto Nagatomo on the overlap, but gradually the Nerazzurri began to feed him the ball in behind, hurting the Blues in the final third.

Holding his position high and wide prevented Chelsea from pushing their back line further up the field and with a mismatch over the first 10 yards between himself and Cesar Azpilicueta, only the weight of pass from one of Inter's superb midfielders was needed to slice the champions open.

A forward, in Stevan Jovetic, did the job though, picking out Perisic in transition at the start of the second half and the Croatian made no mistake, drilling past Thibaut Courtois with a cleanly struck left-footed shot.

His change of pace was causing Antonio Conte's side all sorts of trouble and Joao Mario found him one-on-one after an instinctive sprint towards goal. Rather than take it himself, Perisic held the ball up unselfishly and released the Portuguese for the return with a square ball for what should have been a third for Inter.

The Nerazzurri will be desperate to hold on to him and may push their luck in the next stage of negotiations by bumping the price up a little after this dazzling display.

Mourinho — not to mention Romelu Lukaku, who would benefit greatly from his signing — will instead use it as further proof that the Red Devils should back him and sign Perisic before the deadline.
