Liverpool have been linked with a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Reds are said to be ready to upgrade their goalkeeping corps in the summer, as Jurgen Klopp looks for alternatives to Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

And according to Bleacher Report , Butland is their chief target as they get ready to spend the £142million they received from the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Ambitious Butland is believed to be keen on a move to a Premier League title contender and Stoke would struggle to hold on to him should the Reds come calling with a decent bid.

Jurgen Klopp explains why Liverpool decided to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona

Jurgen Klopp claims Liverpool should Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona because they feared he would not have been fully committed if they had made him stay.

Liverpool blocked Coutinho’s dream move to the Nou Camp in the summer and the Brazil star knuckled down to play well in his last three months at Anfield.

But Klopp admits he did not want to gamble on Coutinho remaining fully focussed if Liverpool had denied him again this month and reluctantly sanctioned his £145million sale.

“I knew it would come up again in this transfer window and it could have been very difficult if we had done what we could have done -‘there’s your contract and you have to stay here’ - and to use him as a player in the second half of the season,” said the Reds boss.

“That was a decision I have to make, does it make sense, do I think I can still use him, can he help us still? And to be honest, it was 100 per cent clear, no chance.

"I was in certain habits and certain things became second nature to me and in football it is all about instinct. You train and train a certain thing so when you are in that situation you don’t think about it.

"It just might be a simple trigger when something happens and the defence passes to that player and the ball is slightly behind him.

"That is your cue to go and press. At your previous club you might not even look into that. I have about 100 different things but it is all those adding up."
