Chris Smalling could be nudged towards the Old Trafford exit door this month, according to reports.

The Star on Sunday say Smalling is first in line to leave Manchester United if Jose Mourinho decides to resurrect the deal to sign Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

Everton are reportedly monitoring the England defender's situation at United and could swoop if there are any signs that he is no longer wanted at United.

Smalling was one of United's standout players last season but a toe injury cost him a place in the team in October and Mourinho has since favoured a defensive partnership comprising of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

United 2-1 Boro: 5 things we learned

Manchester United staged a thrilling late comeback to stretch their winning run in the Premier League to five games, writes David McDonnell.

United looked to be heading for defeat when Grant Leadbitter plundered a 67th-minute goal to give Boro the lead against the run of play.

But two goals in the space of 90 seconds from Anthony Martial and world-record signing Paul Pogba turned the game on its head and earned United the win.

It was a fitting win to mark Sir Alex Ferguson's 75 birthday, the kind of comeback triumph the former United boss – watching from the stands – made his trademark during his time in charge.

Mourinho lauds "phenomenal" players after comeback

Jose Mourinho hailed his "phenomenal" players after their comeback win over Middlesbrough, writes Alex Richards.

Late goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba handed United a deserved victory over a stubborn Boro side, who had taken a second-half lead through Grant Leadbitter's smart finish.

Manchester United had earlier seen a goal disallowed, much to the displeasure of the home fans, while they also struck the woodwork twice.

"My players were phenomenal," Mourinho told the BBC. "We managed to do something I love – bring the fans to the pitch. The last 15 minutes, there were 70,000 on the pitch against 11.

"I am happy with the way we played. We hit the post, we scored a fantastic goal, we were dominant, stopped our opponents playing. It’s a very good feeling, as I was expecting.

"[But] I don’t feel the same happiness because my brother is on the other side. Aitor Karanka did his job amazing. I feel for my brother and his players because they gave everything."

Depay has not been part of Jose Mourinho’s United squad since November 24, and the Special One confirmed on Friday that the 22-year-old had been left out because he wanted to quit the club.

Depay’s star has fallen to such an extent during his 18 months at Old Trafford that Danny Blind is warning him their could be ramifications on his international career.

Blind said: “Memphis must make a transfer in January. He is not on the core of the squad. This is why he should move."
