Mesut Ozil will walk away from Arsenal on a free next summer, according to reports in Germany.

Playmaker Ozil is in the final year of his contract at the Emirates but was in talks with the Gunners over extending his deal.

Those talks appear to have now broken down with SportBild claiming that Ozil has decided to leave the club.

Manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that he was confident of keeping Ozil at Arsenal.

Speaking earlier this summer, he said he was fine with having Ozil in the final year of his contract.

“Yes, I think in the future you will see it more and more," he said.

“Why? Because the transfers are so high even for normal players, you will see more and more players going into the final year of the contract.

Arsenal star Hector Bellerin has defended the club following criticism over their business during the summer transfer window - and believes they are still title contenders.

The Gunners broke their transfer record to sign Alexandre Lacazette, but only he and free transfer Sead Kolasinac arrived.

Other big-money moves - such as that for Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar - failed to materialise.

Fans and club legends have questioned how the summer was allowed to pan out as it did for the Gunners, but Bellerin is pleased and believes it's not always cash that solves problems.
