Back in the days before social media when people used to actually talk to each other, there used to be a joke about Scottish goalkeepers not being very good.

Players from north of the border used to make up a fair chunk of the better teams in England - and plenty of them were excellent - but for some reason the goalkeepers were always a bit dodgy, and people weren't shy to bring that up.

Being a "Scottish goalkeeper" almost became slang for not being very good between the sticks, and but that joke has died off in recent years when we don't see as many of the country's players in the Premier League.

Craig Gordon used to be there with Sunderland, but he's back north of the border now at Celtic.

And when he rather unconvincingly tried to save Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's effort in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against England at Hampden Park , an old joke got a 21st century reboot.

And while the youth of today might not have got that joke, they go get hilarious memes.

They were soon out in force as well.

Luckily for Gordon though, it turns out that Scottish outfield players are pretty good, and his side took the lead thanks to Leigh Griffiths' pair of free-kicks, before Harry Kane popped up at the death for the equaliser.

All in all it was pretty exciting for a Saturday afternoon in the middle of June, eh?

Makes you proud to be British.
