Football fans are not a particularly sympathetic bunch.

In the harsh world of the beautiful game, if a player makes a catastrophic error which leads to heartbreak, you can bet your life that fans of rival clubs will take great pleasure in enjoying that unfortunate player's agony.

Which is why, three and a half years on, Steven Gerrard still gets all sort of stick over THAT slip.

For those of you new to the joys of Premier League football, 27 April 2014 was the day the Liverpool skipper famously fell over against Chelsea at Anfield, allowing Demba Ba in to score and effectively end The Reds' title hopes.

It was the worst moment of Gerrard's otherwise stellar career; a horrible mistake one of the Premier League's greatest players didn't deserve.

Sadly for 'Stevie G', it's also one of the first things people think of when they remember his Premier League playing days.

So, at this week's Legends of Football event, where Gerrard was being honoured for his services to the game. the moment inevitably came up while he was on stage.

And remarkably, the former midfielder revealed the excuse he's been trying to use for the last three years:

Yes, the Liverpool legend has been trying - and failing - to throw his former team mate Mamadou Sakho under the metaphorical bus.

In front of the crowd at the charity dinner, Gerrard joked that he's tried to blame his slip on the pass he got from Sakho… but "no-one's having it".

Fair play to Gerrard - at least he's got a sense of humour about the whole thing…
