Carabao Cup: Manchester United v Burton Albion live on Sky Sports

Manchester United v Burton Albion

Jose Mourinho will name a strong Manchester United side when they face Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports Football from 7.30pm.

Mourinho is expected to make changes from the team that beat Everton 4-0 on Nissan Super Sunday, with captain Michael Carrick and youngster Scott McTominay pushing for inclusion.

Live Carabao Cup

United have made an impressive start to the season, winning four of their opening five Premier League matches.

They also beat Basel 3-0 in their first Champions League group-stage game and are aiming to win the League Cup in consecutive seasons after their 3-2 success over Southampton in the final in February.

United and Burton have met in a competitive fixture just twice before, with both meetings coming in the FA Cup third round in 2006. Burton earned a 0-0 draw at the Pirelli before United cruised into the fourth round with a 5-0 win in the replay.

Jose Mourinho's League cup record: Nigel Clough's Burton are in his way

Burton are 19th in the Championship after a mixed start to the season and their boss Nigel Clough is under no illusions as to the size of the challenge that faces his side.

"I watched the first 10 minutes, Everton couldn't get out of their half," Clough said. "We will try and not make any mistakes and try to get out of our half. They just penned them in.

"I don't think you can make plans for specific players, when you look at the squad they can use all internationals, we've got to be at our very best to match them."

Team news

Luke Shaw, Carrick and McTominay are in contention, so too is goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Paul Pogba (hamstring) and Axel Tuanzebe (back) are out of the third-round tie, joining Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee) on the sidelines.

Burton will be without defender John Brayford, who is cup-tied having played for Sheffield United in the competition.

Will Miller (hamstring) is their only other absentee, with Clough set to pick from an otherwise fully-fit squad.

Opta stats

These two sides have never met in the league or League Cup but did meet in the FA Cup back in January 2006 - with Man Utd winning the replay at Old Trafford 5-0 after a 0-0 draw at Burton.

Man Utd have been eliminated from the League Cup in two of the last three games played at Old Trafford against lower league opponents - most recently losing out in a penalty shootout to Middlesbrough in October 2015.

Burton Albion are at the third-round stage for just the third time in their history, losing to teams in the second and fourth tiers on those occasions.

The Red Devils have reached the fourth round in eight of the last nine seasons, with the exception being in 2014-15, losing out to Championship side MK Dons 4-0 in the second round.

Burton have faced Premier League opposition on three occasions in the League Cup, with the Brewers being eliminated twice and progressing past QPR in August 2014.

Charlie predicts

Burton will turn up, be well organised, well drilled by Nigel Clough. They had a great result at the weekend as well in beating Fulham.

Manchester United will make plenty of chances but they just have so many quality options now, with the likes of Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Michael Carrick and Antony Martial all ready to come in.

There's a good feeling around Old Trafford again. Are they playing brilliant? Not really, but they've got a confidence about them back at home.

Jose Mourinho won't want to see too many flicks again but I don't see anything other than a very comfortable United win.

Charlie predicts: 4-0 and Lingard to score first (25/1 with Sky Bet)

Betting

United are Sky Bet's shortest-priced favourites of the third round with Burton priced at 33/1 to win and 11/1 to take the tie to extra-time.

Mourinho's men are also outright favourites at 11/2 to lift the trophy again, while their visitors are 750/1 outsiders.

Lukaku heads the first goalscorer betting at 9/4 with Joe Mason, Luke Varney and Marvin Sordell considered the Brewers' main threat at 12/1 apiece to break the deadlock.
