Jose Mourinho says Anthony Martial must follow Marcus Rashford's example to earn a place in his Manchester United side.
The United manager has openly criticised some of his players including Martial and, in particular, Luke Shaw, with Mourinho questioning their fitness and commitment.
Martial impressed in his first season at Old Trafford, scoring 11 Premier League goals in 31 appearances under Louis van Gaal, but has made just 12 top-flight starts in the current campaign and scored three goals.
Rashford has also struggled to replicate the goalscoring form of his breakthrough season, but Mourinho has explained why the England striker has retained his place in the first-team squad while Martial has been left out.
"I have to go in the direction of the players, but they also have to go in my direction," Mourinho said at a press conference before United's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht.
"Since September, Rashford has not scored in the Premier League, but he was always a player I chose. He was always a player I support because he was always coming in my direction and giving me what I want, so it is about that.
"Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes.
"But he needs to give me things that I like."
Mourinho added: "We are together for almost 10 months and I know the players much better now, they should know me much better now."
Rashford scored his second Premier League goal in as many games as he led the line for United in place of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 2-0 win over leaders Chelsea on Sunday.
Wayne Rooney could bring further options for Mourinho up front, with the United boss confirming Rooney will be part of his squad to face Anderlecht if he responds well in Wednesday's training session following injury.
"He's working, he's improving and, if in this session the answer is positive, I will select him to be on the bench tomorrow," Mourinho said.
"His experience, his know-how of this knock-out phase - I think he's a player that can be useful tomorrow. He can help us."
United, who are level 1-1 with Anderlecht on aggregate, will be without longer-term absentees for the second leg on Thursday night, but Mourinho has no fresh concerns following the win over his old club Chelsea.
"No injuries from the [Chelsea] game, but also no one has recovered," he said. "[Juan] Mata, [Phil] Jones, [Chris] Smalling - they are still out. Wayne is the only one that is possible, but I cannot confirm now."
