Jose Mourinho has expressed concern over Ander Herrera after the midfielder was taken off during their friendly win over Real Madrid in Santa Clara.

Herrera had come on at half time in the International Champions Cup clash but lasted only several minutes before he hobbled off clutching his hip or waist.

After United won the contest on penalties, Mourinho pondered that it could be a rib injury and that it looked "very painful".

"I want to wait and see what it is. "It must at least be very painful for Ander to come off," he said.

"I always say to the players that you don't risk anything in friendly matches. If you feel something is coming, even if it is a little injury, get off because the result is not important.

"It was in front of the bench, it was a bad contact. Maybe it is his ribs but I don't know."

Mourinho could do without Herrera becoming a long-term absentee, with Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young all expected to miss the start of the season. Rojo, in fact, could be out until 2018.
