Hopefully this is my season, says Manchester United defender Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw hopes to shine for Manchester United this season and put recent injury misery behind him to help the club win trophies.

The defender came in for criticism from manager Jose Mourinho last season as he struggled for form after coming back from a horrific leg break, before another spell on the sidelines at the end of last term.

While he continues his rehabilitation from his latest injury, Shaw is hoping his return to the squad will herald a new era of his United career as they target multiple silverware victories.

"It's a very big season for me. It's one I'm looking forward to because it's a big challenge for me, especially given the past few seasons have been up and down," he told Nissan Super Sunday ahead of their clash with West Ham live on Sky Sports.

"Obviously I had the broken leg but the injury I got at the end of last season was kind of unlucky. Hopefully I can put all that behind me now. Hopefully this is my season and I can prove people wrong.

"I want to prove it to myself too because I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think I'd be able to play here. I believe in myself. The manager believes in me as well and that's given me a big confidence boost. I'm really looking forward to getting started again.

"Deep down I have to look at what I was doing at the start of last season. Maybe at the time I thought I was training hard enough but what gives me confidence is that the manager believes I can do more.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho publicly criticised Luke Shaw last season

"I'm ready now. I think I realise now even more how important it is to give everything for the manager and the club; to strive for the best, to win trophies.

"He obviously says it in the press [about liking the squad] but he says it to the team, too. That brings everyone together. We all feel really tight this season and ready to go for trophies. The main one is the Premier League and we're all happy to be back in the Champions League so we'll hopefully do well in that too.

"Things are going well, I'm feeling really good. I'm training outside now so it's just a matter of time before I'm back out there with the team."
