Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Nathaniel Clyne will be on the sidelines for a significant period of time due to a back injury.

There was some surprise that Clyne was left out of Liverpool's Champions League squad but Klopp says the England international is unlikely to be fit until the group stages are almost over.

The 26-year-old England international right-back has not featured since playing 45 minutes of the first pre-season friendly at Tranmere in July and Sky sources understand that the back problem will keep him out for up to another three months.

Klopp told Liverpool's official website: "Nathaniel is working hard on his rehab and we have kept a close eye on his progress, but the reality is we are looking at some time still before he is back and available for selection.

"I am told it will be longer than just a couple of weeks, so we will continue to monitor and assess.

"It is pretty certain he'll not be available for the majority of the Champions League group matches.

"If we are fortunate enough to still be in UEFA competition in the New Year, he could be added to the squad then.

"The medical guys are pleased with how he is responding and Nathaniel has shown a really strong attitude, given he is not someone who is used to being out injured."

The Champions League group matches run between September 13 to December 6 and will provide Clyne's deputies with further chances to impress.

And Klopp added: "What is positive for us is how Joe (Gomez) and Trent (Alexander-Arnold) have stepped up and grasped their opportunities."

Liverpool have made a positive start to the season and, as well as qualifying for the Champions League group stages, they lie second in the Premier League table after three matches, ahead of a trip to fourth-placed Manchester City on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Premier League from 11.30am.
