Mesut Ozil is set to end the speculation he could leave Arsenal and sign a contract extension with the club.

The midfielder has just six months to run on his existing deal, meaning he could speak to foreign clubs about a free transfer in the summer.

However, he is now set to stay at Arsenal, with the news coming just hours after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined the club from Borussia Dortmund for around £60m.

Earlier this season Ozil was reported to be attracting interest from Manchester United, who signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January in a swap-deal which saw another attacking midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, head in the opposite direction.

But Arsene Wenger had maintained Ozil would not be leaving Arsenal in the current transfer window.

Sky Sports pundit and former Gunners striker Alan Smith had said Ozil was "close to signing a new contract" earlier in January.

Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013, has scored four goals in 21 appearances this season.
