Graeme Souness says Everton should appoint David Unsworth as their next permanent manager

Graeme Souness believes that Everton should appoint David Unsworth as their next permanent manager.

The Toffees sacked Ronald Koeman on Monday after recording just two wins in their last 14 matches, and appointed under-23s manager Unsworth as his temporary replacement.

Souness, though, believes that Unsworth should be more than just a short-term choice, and deserves the job permanently.

Souness said: "I would give it to him. I think he has two very obvious advantages over anybody else.

"He knows the club inside out. He knows who's coming through. He's an Everton man."

If Unsworth does not get the job full-time, Souness thinks that the Toffees should look to appoint Sean Dyche.

When asked if the Burnley boss would be a good fit, Souness said: "Yes I think so. He's young, he understands the Premier League. He's been around it for about three seasons now.

"I don't suppose the Burnley supporters would be too happy with me touting him around for another job. But yes, he would be a good choice as well."

Souness - who spent a large part of his trophy-laden playing and managerial career at Everton's bitter rivals Liverpool - bemoaned the lack of opportunities afforded to British coaches in the Premier League.

"We're obsessed with going out and getting the latest Latin-sounding name," he said. "We've got lots of foreign owners and they look at the big names. More than 50 per cent of the time they get it wrong

"There's nothing wrong with British coaches. We understand the game. They [foreign coaches] are not bringing anything new to the game. It's a mystery to me."

Sean Dyche has admitted that it is "very flattering" to be linked with Everton, while Sky Sports News understands that former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel is open to an approach.

Unsworth has also stated he wants the job permanently, and said after Everton's 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday he is scheduled to meet the club's owner Farhad Moshiri on Friday.

The new book by Graeme Souness, Football: My Life, My Passion, published by Headline books, is out now.
