Rafa Benitez is a serious doubt for Newcastle United's trip to Swansea on Sunday - live on Sky Sports - following surgery.

Benitez had an operation at the weekend to treat an infection from an initial hernia operation two years ago.

The Spaniard has attempted to make the trip to Newcastle's training ground from his home in Merseyside three times this week, but has been forced to return home due to a discomfort in his groin.

Sky Sports News were told on Thursday Benitez would be back in training in time for the game, but his condition has failed to improve since.

The Newcastle team will fly to south Wales on Saturday and Benitez will not travel with the squad.
