Manchester City women have announced Denmark international striker Nadia Nadim has agreed a deal with the club that will begin in January 2018.

The 29-year-old, who will join from Portland Thorns, was the club's top scorer last season - with nine goals.

She has also scored 22 goals in 74 appearances for Denmark and she helped her country to the final of 2017 UEFA Woman's European Championships.

Nadim, originally from Afghanistan, was forced to leave her native country when she was 10 years old after the Taliban murdered her father.

Her family made it to Europe via Pakistan and with forged passports, found a flight to Italy. They were expecting to be travelling to London but were left in rural Denmark.

Nadim said on her move to the Woman's Super League: "I am so excited to join Manchester City and for me there wasn't really any other choice.

"Manchester City has done so much for women's football and I want to be a part of the history they are making.

"Their ambitions to grow the game and win trophies reflect my own and I'm ready for the new challenge, especially when it comes to challenging for the Women's Champions League trophy.

"The City Football Academy is massive and the knowledge and professionalism of everyone at the club is something I've never seen before.

"I always want to improve as a player and I'm confident that I can do that here. I only hope I can contribute to helping the whole team achieve even more this season."

Nick Cushing, head coach of Manchester City Women added: "Nadia is somebody who has been on our radar for a while now. Her physical attributes and her presence as a striker are really going to bring our team on and really improve us.

"We speak consistently about the type of person we want to bring in and that's no different with this signing. Nadia is a very bubbly character, somebody who loves the game and I think her story shows the desire and the real drive she has to succeed as a football player."

Nadim becomes the latest high profile addition to join Man City after two-times world player of the year Carli Lloyd had a spell with the club in their 2017 Spring Series.
