Winks has been promoted from the England U21s to bolster manager Gareth Southgate's options for the game against Slovenia at Wembley and the match in Lithuania on Sunday.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is also unavailable to Southgate after he and Manchester City midfielder Delph were assessed by the FA's medical staff on Monday, when the decision was made for them to return to their clubs.

Winks has featured seven times for Spurs this season and played the whole of the 4-0 win at Huddersfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The 21-year-old comes in for Delph, who last played for England in November 2015 and missed Euro 2016 with a groin strain.

Delph has struggled to secure a regular place in City's side since joining from Aston Villa in July 2015 but has played five times for Pep Guardiola's side this season, including the 1-0 win at Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Southgate now has 25 players to select from for the fixtures against Slovenia and Lithuania, although Winks' Tottenham team-mate Dele Alli is suspended for the first of the two ties.
