Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland has described Manchester City as 'incredible' after they were thrashed 7-2 by them

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland has described Manchester City’s performance against them as “incredible” after they were beaten 7-2 by Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Potters battled back from 3-0 to reduce the deficit to 3-2 early in the second half at the Etihad on Saturday, only for their opponents to go on the offensive and score four more goals without reply.

Butland picked out the two Manchester clubs as most likely title contenders at the start of the season and what he witnessed last weekend has only reinforced his opinion, particularly with regard to City.

"At the start of the season, when I saw the squads, United and City were out there on their own for me of teams that could potentially win the league," he told Sky Sports News.

"We got a good result at home to Manchester United [a 2-2 draw on September 9] and I thought our performance against United was much better than against City at the weekend.

"They were incredible. It just seemed like everything they did worked.

"With the players they have got, if they can play to that level on a consistent basis, they will be difficult to stop."

Stoke play Bournemouth at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday and Butland insists confidence remains high in the camp despite their drubbing in Manchester, a result which leaves them just one place and two points above the relegation zone.

"We have always had a good response. When we've had a bad result we've bounced back," he added.

"We have enough pride in the dressing room to know that what went on last week wasn't good enough and we need to put it right.

"The mood is extremely positive."

Jack Butland was speaking after attending a community event as part of the club's 'City 7's' scheme which is being expanded to offer every child in Stoke the chance of getting two free tickets and a home shirt on their 7th birthday.
