Pep Guardiola has challenged Phil Foden to make himself a regular starter at Manchester City after he made his first-team debut against Feyenoord on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old, who helped England win the Under-17 World Cup last month, came on as a 75th-minute substitute in the Champions League clash at the Etihad.

Foden is the first player born this century to play for City and has been tipped to have a bright future after being named Player of the Tournament at the U17 World Cup.

"Phil knows that the club is there to support him but it depends on him," said City boss Guardiola. "He has to come and work every day and he knows we trust a lot with him and we are going to try."

Foden was not the only youngster to feature against Feyenoord as City confirmed top spot in Group F with a 1-0 win.

Brahim Diaz, 18, was also introduced late in the game in place of match-winner Raheem Sterling.

"A big congratulations to our academy," said Guardiola. "The club should be so proud. We had a 17 and 18-year old making an appearance in Champions League and had the result been more comfortable, they would have played more minutes.

"They are young talents. Our squad is not too big. We will see what happens in the next few games.

"Hopefully they can stay for a long time and help us. For the Academy and the way they work with them… they deserve the credit - the managers, people, the team-mates.

"They are responsible for them making their first appearance in this competition."
