Despite being relegated from the top flight for the first time in ten years, Jack Rodwell is positive Sunderland will swiftly return to the Premier League.

Sunderland's campaign ended in a 5-1 defeat to champions Chelsea and the Black Cats finished bottom of the table having won only six top-flight matches all season.

"It's difficult, but we just have to focus on next season now," said Rodwell. "It's not been the season we wanted. We're disappointed and feel we've let the fans down. We want to give them something to cheer next season.

"No-one wants that [relegation], but this is a great club and I'm sure we can bounce back up."

Sunderland manager David Moyes is due to meet owner Ellis Short and chief executive Martin Bain this week to discuss the plans for the club with hopes set on winning the Championship title.

However, with eight players reaching the end of their contracts this summer and with striker Jermain Defoe seemingly set to take advantage of a relegation release clause and 'keeper Jordan Pickford reportedly attracting interest from Premier League clubs, there may be major close-season changes at the Stadium of Light.
