Ryan Shawcross hopes to stay at Stoke but admits the decision on a new contract is in the club's hands.

The former Manchester United defender has been with the Potters for 10 years and has held initial talks about extending his stay further beyond the 12 months he has remaining on his current terms.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes is keen for 29-year-old Shawcross to sign a new long-term deal, but the centre-back is waiting on the club's hierarchy for talks to progress.

"I've always said I'd stay at Stoke," said Shawcross.

"I spoke to Tony Scholes at the end of last season and since then we've not spoken again - but I've got another year, there's no massive rush. I'm here for another season so that's where we are at.

"It's up to the club. I have a year left and I can only comment on what I've got. If they want to make it longer then I'll be delighted.
