There was a little disappointment at Stoke after finishing 13th last season but the fact that Mark Hughes' men were only one win away from eighth highlights how close things were in the middle of the table.
Even so, the Potters boss could do with a bright start to a campaign that kicks off at Goodison Park against a new-look Everton team.
Although mainstays Marko Arnautovic, Glenn Whelan and Jon Walters have departed, the overhaul at Stoke has been relatively low key by comparison.
Darren Fletcher is the biggest name to arrive so far and though more are expected to follow, the first game of the season is nearly upon us.
