Mame Biram Diouf has been praised by Mark Hughes but, according to the Stoke boss, he may have to continue playing as a wing-back for the foreseeable future.

The 29-year-old signed a contract extension earlier this week, and is just one appearance short of bringing up the ton for the Potters.

Diouf joined Stoke in 2014 and his new deal at the Bet365 Stadium take him through to the summer of 2020.

However, his manager says he may not get too many opportunities to play in his favoured position of striker.

Hughes said: "He's a great guy with fantastic attitude to his work. He gets a bit frustrated he doesn't play down the middle but, at the moment, he's playing exceptionally well in his new role.

"There's nothing to say he won't play there at some point this season but at the moment there is no reason to move him.

"We have a couple of players who have the flexibility to play in different positions, like Geoff Cameron, and that helps you during games when you can move people around and keep XI on the pitch. We're delighted that Mame has committed to us."

Diouf said recently: "I want to play as a striker but I'm a football player and will play wherever the manager asks me to and try and do my best."
