The FA have charged Troy Deeney with violent conduct after his altercation with Joe Allen during Watford's home defeat to Stoke City on Saturday.

Three former professional match officials reviewed the incident on Monday and unanimously agreed the striker should be charged. He has until 6pm on Tuesday to respond.

Deeney grappled with Allen after the midfielder squared up to him in added-time at Vicarage Road, incensed by the striker's failure to return the ball after Stoke had put the ball out for an injury to a Watford player.

Watford captain Deeney dug his thumb into Allen's cheek and appeared to shove Stoke counterpart Ryan Shawcross to the ground during the tussle.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes described Deeney's actions as "unpleasant" after the much-needed 1-0 win for his side but Wales international Allen, who was booked for his part in the incident, made light of the clash.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes was left disappointed with Watford's Troy Deeney

Allen said: "It was handbags really and there was nothing to it. I like Troy, he's one of the good guys, he's a really good player and it was nothing personal.

"We were clinging on at the end and expecting the ball back because we had a man down injured, they were chasing the equaliser and decided to play on.
