David Wagner was asked about reports that Huddersfield were considering closing the club's academy.

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner admits the club are struggling to produce Premier League players from their academy.

Reports this week claimed Huddersfield were reviewing their youth set-up with chairman Dean Hoyle considering closing the academy.

Philip Billing is the only graduate to feature in Wagner's squad and he was signed as a 16-year-old from Esbjerg in Denmark in 2013.

Wagner says the club are finding it difficult to promote within and have had to look to other club's academies for players.

Chelsea graduate Kasey Palmer re-joined the club this summer after spending last season on loan at the club.

He said: "This is what we have done (buy) in the past. We bought, we went to other academies and to other football clubs to find additions for our squad. I think this only shows how difficult it is for our academy players.

"Of course it is a problem for a club of our size to produce Premier League players. It's a problem for a lot of clubs. It is a problem for us for sure as well."

Huddersfield have been operating without an academy manager since Steve Weaver left on August 3.

Championship side Brentford, who closed their academy in 2016, now use a B team of players aged between 17-21. It has resulted in seven players going on to make their debut at senior level and it is also seen as cost-effective.

Wagner wouldn't be drawn on whether closing Huddersfield's academy would be a good idea but says the club are trying to find the right solution.

"To be fair I am not involved in this process. This is totally the club and chairman's decision. I have read about it but I am not involved.

"The solution is to solve this problem and it is for the chairman and club to decide."
