Gareth Southgate says he had been hoping to put Harry Maguire in one of his previous England squads

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire is one of three uncapped players named in the England squad to face Malta and Slovakia.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and Watford's Nathaniel Chalobah are the other new names in the group for the next two World Cup Qualifiers, on September 1 and September 4 respectively.

Joe Hart has retained his place in the squad, while there is also a call-up for his West Ham club-mate Aaron Cresswell, who has only made two international appearances.

Everton defender Michael Keane, who has also played twice for England, is included, as is Tottenham's right-back Kieran Trippier, who has one England outing to his name.

Manager Gareth Southgate confirmed he had hoped to include Maguire in one of his previous squads, and that the call-ups for Chalobah and Jordan Pickford are a reward for their performances for the Under-21s.

"I thought his performances for Hull were very good," Southgate said of Maguire. "He's a defender that's very comfortable with the ball and he fits the profile of international football.

"He's already adjusted really well to being at a new club at Leicester City. He plays with great composure and it's a really good opportunity for us to have a look at him around the senior squad.

And he added: "With Nathaniel and Jordan, that's a nod to the summer really - they were our best players in the Under-21 Championship and have great international experience at other age levels.

"Nathaniel has started the season extremely well with Watford. He's tactically an intelligent player and we know what he can bring."
