FIFA are "gathering evidence" before deciding whether to punish Dele Alli for his obscene gesture during England’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia.
The incident took place in the 76th minute of the match at Wembley after the 21-year-old was denied a free-kick following a tackle from Martin Skrtel.
Alli apologised on social media after the match, claiming the gesture was intended for team-mate Kyle Walker and not French referee Clement Turpin.
England manager Gareth Southgate said in his post-match press conference Alli had assured him the gesture was meant in a light-hearted manner.
"I've not seen it but I've been made aware of it. Dele and Kyle were mucking about and Deli made a gesture towards Kyle," Southgate told reporters.
"I don't know what's been visible on the picture and what the angle of the picture is. They have a strange way of communicating but that's what they've said when I raised it.
"But as I say, I haven't seen it myself."
It is understood no formal investigation has yet been opened, with FIFA waiting to analyse reports from the match officials before deciding whether to take further action.
