Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness thinks the current side's problems make them painful to watch

Graeme Souness says results have been "painful" for Liverpool this season because of the club's wasteful finishing.

The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by Spartak Moscow in the Champions League in midweek, despite dominating possession and having 16 shots on goal to Spartak's four.

Liverpool have now managed just one win from their last six games in all competitions, a 3-2 victory at Leicester in their previous Premier League match.

They travel to Newcastle on Nissan Super Sunday with Sadio Mane back in the squad having served his three-match suspension.

Souness believes Jurgen Klopp's side can be devastating in attack, but says their inability to kill games off is coming back to haunt them.

"The manager and supporters must be tearing their hair out," Souness told Sky Sports News. "They are dominating the ball, they have chance after chance - they might sneak one goal - but they don't really take them [their chances].

"Then the other team is very much in the game when it's just 1-0. Liverpool are making mistakes in their own box and it leads to disappointing results.

"Klopp will be looking at the stats, they have so many chances, so much possession, and come away losing or drawing the game.

Graeme Souness gives an unusual team-talk, designed to help you quit smoking in October

"What's the answer? Be more clinical. In most of their games they are capable of putting the match to bed inside 45 minutes. It's something the players must find an answer to, they have to put their chances away when they come along.

"I think they will start scoring more goals and winning more games than they are managing at the moment. But right now it is painful for them."

Graeme Souness is supporting Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge starting on 1st October. If you quit for 28 days, you are five times more likely to quit for good.
