Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen opened the scoring for Belgium against Greece with a powerful strike from 25 yards out

Jan Vertonghen scored a 25-yard screamer as Belgium secured their spot at the 2018 World Cup with a 2-1 victory against Greece.

The Tottenham defender let fly in the 70th minute with the game finally poised at 0-0 after some neat passing football from the Belgians.

Spurs team-mate Mousa Dembele tapped the ball into Vertonghen's path and the centre-back let fly with a hard, low effort that fizzed through the Greece box before landing in the bottom corner past goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis.

It started a four-minute flurry of goals, with Zeca levelling up for the hosts in the 73rd minute before Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku scored the winner for Belgium a minute later.

The result saw Roberto Martinez's side - currently top of their group with 22 points from eight games - book their place in Russia next year.
