Arsenal have welcomed hundreds of firefighters who tackled the Grenfell Tower blaze as guests of honour at their Emirates Cup tournament this weekend.

The Gunners extended the invitation to 400 firefighters and their family, who watched on as Arsenal beat Benfica 5-2 on Saturday. They are also invited to Sunday's matches between Arsenal and Sevilla, and RB Leipzig and Benfica.

At least 80 people were killed in the fire at the 24-storey west London tower block in June.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger praised the heroism of those who had battled the blaze in Kensington, writing in his programme notes: "I would like to thank all the fans for their support at this year’s Emirates Cup and offer a special welcome to the 400 firefighters and their families who we have invited to both days of the competition.

"Many of the firefighters were directly involved in the response to the Grenfell Tower Tragedy.

"Heroic is a word we will often hear in a football context but these brave men and women truly embody what it means to be a hero.

"I know the club’s community department also worked hard to help with the relief efforts at Grenfell, everyone here at Arsenal was shocked and deeply saddened by events in west London and we send our deepest sympathies to those many families affected."

Arsenal are not the only London club to have offered their support, with QPR set to host a charity 'Game For Grenfell' at Loftus Road on September 2.

Ex-England internationals Alan Shearer and Peter Crouch and musician Marcus Mumford are among the names confirmed to take part.
