Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expects Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to mature into a "very great player".

Chelsea were this morning linked with a £25million move for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who also has just one year remaining on his existing contract, but Wenger reiterated his hope the England international would agree fresh terms to stay at Emirates Stadium.

Speaking ahead of his side's Premier League opener against Leicester on Friday, Wenger said: “I think in his career he had some bad moments because he had some small injuries,” said Wenger.

“Last year he was much more stable. Personally, I think he is a hugely talented player. He is on the way up and he will continue to move up because that potential is there. He is today very conscious of his qualities as well, which he was not always, and I personally believe he will be a very great player.”

Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez has been ruled out for two weeks after suffering an abdominal injury in training.
