Harry Kane has urged referees to clamp down on the “dangerous” tactics he believes Sunderland used against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

Tottenham were furious that Jack Rodwell was shown only a yellow card for a knee-high tackle on Mousa Dembele, while Kane highlighted another challenge he said had left Heung-min Son with a damaged shin.

Tottenham could only draw 0-0 against a side who started the night bottom of the table, as they missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Chelsea.

While Kane did not seek to use referee Lee Mason as an excuse for Spurs’ drab display, he argued that Rodwell and others should have been dealt with more severely.

“You can say it is physical but I think we have to be protected as well,” said Kane. “There were some decisions against Sunderland that were very surprising.

“Mousa was kicked knee high. If you kick anyone knee high on purpose, it is a red card — it doesn’t matter if it’s a ‘tactical foul’. Sonny also had a big gash on his shin where one of their players followed through after kicking the ball. We’re disappointed at that side of it. The tackle on Mousa was dangerous and definitely a red card.”

Tottenham were also waiting today to assess Danny Rose, who had to go off in the first half after suffering a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino hopes goalkeeper Hugo Lloris can recover from illness to face Middlesbrough at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
