United will move for their big targets in the summer

Sky Sports News'  James Cooper reports that Man Utd will wait until the summer to spend big because they know their first choice targets are unattainable in the middle of the season.

Antoine Griezmann and Gareth Bale have been mentioned, Rio Ferdinand even suggested signing both of them, and money is no object given that the club have recently passed the £500 million mark for annual revenue. Cooper said:

"They've got some big names on their transfer check-list, if you like.

"Not big names they can bring in in the winter but they've not got a big tradition of doing that in the past 10 years.

"The summer will be interesting business for United and United fans.

Schweinsteiger definitely staying

Despite barely playing all season, World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger will not be leaving this month because Jose Mourinho wants the cover in central midfield. Speaking after United's win over Wigan in the FA Cup fourth-round, Mourinho said:

“He’s staying and he’s going to the Europa League list.

“There are spaces from Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin [leaving] and we don’t have many players and many options in midfield.

“He was a good professional when he was not playing and he is going to be the same, good professional. With so many competitions and minutes [for United to play], he’s an option.”

Rooney to stay put: until the summer at least

James Ducker reports that Utd will not sanction a deal that sees Wayne Rooney move to China before deadline day. Despite a willingness within the club to let him decide his own future, they want him to hang around for the run-in to provide experience and another attacking option.

Moreover, Rooney is in no rush to leave with a number of lucrative options likely to be on the table in the summer.

Chinese Mou Year

Manchester United manager John Mourinho has revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that he has turned down an offer to move to China.

Mourinho would not reveal the timing of the offer or the specific club, but said:

"I have already refused a big offer to go to China, but I don't criticise anyone who decides to do it.

"It's their choice, their life. Only they can decide what they need for their future. Other managers in the Premier League have been critical, but I am no critic."

Veteran defender 'desperate' to rejoin United

Remember that story about Patrice Evra rejoining Utd? Well according to the France international's agent he was desperate for the move to happened and had even made contact with Jose Mourinho. His representative Federico Pastorello told French outlet Telefoot: "There was contact between the player and Jose Mourinho.

"If there had been an opportunity to return, he would have done everything to go back to Manchester United."

United trying to improve recruitment record?

Manchester United's record in the transfer market has been chequered to say the least since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, and it seems Jose Mourinho is taking steps to address this problem.

Utd have hired Legia Warsaw head of scouting Radoslaw Kucharski to improve their scouting network across Eastern Europe. Kucharski told Legia's official website:

"It is a great honor that Manchester United are interested in me.

"‘I treat it primarily as an appreciation of our shared interest and my personal work for Legia, of which I am particularly proud. "

Forever Young

According to the BBC, Ashley Young is reluctantly planning on leaving Manchester United this month. The midfielder is popular in the Old Trafford dressing room and enjoys playing for the club, but he has grown frustrated by his lack of playing time this season.

Premier League clubs and ones in China are said to be interested in the 31-year-old.

Moyes gets his revenge...

...sort of. The Express are reporting that Sunderland are going to pip Manchester United to the signing of Celtic's highly-rated left-back  Kieran Tierney. The 19-year-old Manxman has impressed for Brendan Rodgers' side this season and has been attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including United.

But with Sunderland on the verge of selling Patrick van Aanholt to Palace for £14m, they will step up their interest in Tierney and could pay as much as £10m for his signature.

Monday activity

Morning everyone, with Deadline Day rapidly approaching, we'll be bringing you all the latest news and rumours from Old Trafford as Manchester United conclude their January buying and selling.

There's only one place to start today, with Wayne Rooney's supposedly impending move to China dominating the headlines. The Sun reported over the weekend that Rooney will move to one of the Chinese Super League's biggest clubs in either Shanghai or Beijing.

The Star has added to the story by stating that Rooney's wife Coleen has given her husband the green light to make the move, even though she is planning on staying in the UK if he does move.

The Chinese transfer window is open until the end of February, so the negotiations could end up taking the best part of a month, but manager Jose Mourinho would not be drawn on the topic after Sunday's 4-0 FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic.

The Mirror though claims that Rooney is 'on the verge' of making the move to the Far East.

Elsewhere, Mourinho has confirmed that Ashley Young is likely to leave the club before the window closes. "The only player that I am aware of possibly leaving is Ashley Young, a player that I would love to keep," Mourinho said on Sunday.

"If I could choose, yes definitely, he will stay with us. We don't have many players and in midfield we don't have many options."

The Mail is reporting that Mourinho may look to bolster his midfield options in January should Young leave, with Monaco's Tiemoue Bakayoko a possible target.

One midfielder who could be staying at Manchester United is former Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, who impressed in a rare start against Wigan yesterday. Schweinsteiger claimed a goal and an assist, and may now stay until the end of the season according to the Manchester Evening News having earlier been frozen out by Mourinho.
