Eric Bailly will miss the European Super Cup final against Real Madrid as well as Manchester United's opening Champions League group game after being hit with an additional two match ban from Uefa.

The United centre half was sent off in the second leg of his team's Europa League tie against Celta Vigo that resulted in him missing the final against Ajax in Stockholm in May.

But Uefa have taken the decision to hand Bailly an extra two match suspension after his actions in the lead up to and following his red card against Celta were deemed "serious".

Bailly was dismissed with just minutes of the game left after lashing out at Celta and former Manchester City striker John Guidetti.

The Ivorian grabbed Guidetti around the throats before also getting involved in an incident with Celta's Argentine defender, Facundo Roncaglia.

Roncaglia was also sent off and the pair had to be separated as they headed down the tunnel.

A statement from Uefa read: "The CEDB has decided to suspend the Manchester United FC player Eric Bailly for three UEFA club competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible."

The news is a severe blow for United manager Jose Mourinho ahead of the Super Cup against European champions Real in Skopje, Macedonia on August 8th.

Bailly has established himself as United's best central defender since his £30.4 million move from Villarreal last summer and won high praise from Mourinho at the back end of last season for his willingness to play through the pain barrier and the high quality of his performances.

Mourinho claimed Bailly had been "phenomenal" against Celta before being sent off although the Portuguese is likely to consider Uefa's decision as harsh.

Mourinho said at the time: "I don't know but I think it was with Roncaglia, right? Roncaglia's not new in these kind of situations and probably Eric was a bit naive. We lose a very important player for the final and we don't have many."

United have also received a warning from Uefa after the semi final second leg against Celta kicked off late.
