Trent Alexander-Arnold was Liverpool's standout player on Tuesday night as Jurgen Klopp's side took a huge step towards the Champions League group stages with a 2-1 win in Germany.

The 18-year-old scored a 35th-minute free-kick to give Liverpool the lead before James Milner doubled their lead to give Klopp's men a crucial first leg lead in their Champions League play-off tie with Hoffenheim

The right back is being given an unlikely run in the first team due to Nathaniel Clyne's injury lay-off.

And Arnold-Alexander scored his first competitive Liverpool goal seven years after he led the team out for a League Cup tie against Leeds at Elland Road.

"It's a thing of dreams to make a European debut for your boyhood club and to mark it with a goal," said the teenager after the end of the match.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard suggested Clyne will face a battle to regain his place in the side when he eventually returns from injury.

"It was a fabulous free kick," said Gerrard, who was working as a pundit for BT Sport's coverage of the match.

"It’s a fantastic strike. What a night for the kid. He’s played superb but to step up and have the character to take that ahead of the likes of Henderson [speaks volumes].

"He’s going to be a top, top player. Clyne has to be very careful this season because he’s breathing down his neck.

"Performances like tonight are letting Klopp know he’s ready for the big time."
