West Bromwich Albion have rejected a "derisory" £21 million bid from Leicester for Jonny Evans.

Leicester have launched a late bid to hijack Manchester City's pursuit of Evans but their latest offer, the second of the summer, has been turned down.

Craig Shakespeare, the Leicester manager, is determined to bring in a left-sided centre-half before the transfer deadline and is being backed by the club's owners to make another big signing.

But West Brom swiftly rebuffed their proposal and are sticking to a valuation of over £30m for the Northern Ireland international.

Manchester City are expected to make another offer in the next 48 hours for Evans, 29, who missed West Brom's 1-1 draw with Stoke on Sunday.

Evans is yet to play this season due to injury but his future remains uncertain at the Hawthorns ahead of Thursday's deadline.

In the programme for Sunday's game, Evans said: "Obviously there's been a bit of speculation around my future here, but from my point of view, it's very simple.

"All I've been concentrating on is getting fit and getting back out on the pitch and doing my bit for the team.

"Every window there's always speculation over transfers but as players these things are often out of your control and it's best not to think too much about it.

"Until anybody tells me different, I'm committed to the Albion and I'm only thinking about getting in this team. It's a great club and I'm proud to be captain."
