Transfer window countdown - what every Premier League club needs in the final days

Premier League
It could be a busy final few days in the top flight

Arsenal

What they need

It is the staleness of the squad in general, as well as the expiring contracts of the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez that is the biggest worry post-Anfield. If Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Shkodran Mustafi leave then there will surely have to be replacements.

Who is likely to come in?

Raheem Sterling and Jonny Evans are the two big targets, but there are question-marks over both.

Who is likely to leave?

Sanchez wants to go and all the attention will focus on him. Oxlade-Chamberlain is on his way, and there might also be farewells for Mustafi, Kieran Gibbs, Lucas Perez and Mathieu Debuchy.

Brighton

What they need

A centre forward with pace. Brighton are yet to score in the Premier League, and any team that defends deep needs speed up top to carry a counter-attacking threat. Without this, Brighton will be 2017-18's Middlesbrough.

Who is likely to come in?

Brighton are interested in Everton outcast Oumar Niasse, and he is certainly realistic despite a mooted asking price of £10 million. Cardiff City's Kenneth Zohore has greater scope.

Who is likely to leave?

Brighton cannot afford to sacrifice too much squad depth, but fringe players such as Connor Goldson, Tomer Hemed and Richie Towell could head back to the Championship.

Busyness rating: 7/10

Bournemouth

What they need

Despite their reputation as an offensive team, Bournemouth struggled to create opportunities against West Brom and Watford. Another creative midfielder to supply Jermain Defoe and Josh King would be welcome, after the fine additions of Nathan Ake and Asmir Begovic further back.

Who is likely to come in?

Reported interest in Leicester City's Damarai Gray is unlikely to bear fruit, so a loan move for a player at a 'Big Six' club might be more feasible. If they could prise Harry Winks away from Spurs for a year that would be perfect.

Who is likely to leave?

Republic of Ireland international Marc Wilson is surplus to requirements and subject to interest from Leeds United.

Burnley

What they need

Despite the addition of Chris Wood, Sean Dyche has been searching for another striker. Burnley must improve their away form this season and find more goals on the road.

Who is likely to come in?

An £8 million bid has been made for Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris, currently playing for French side Lorient.

Who is likely to leave?

Midfielder Fredrik Ulvestad will be seeking another loan move at least to guarantee first time football this season.

Busyness rating: 7/10

Chelsea

What they need

Conte has made it clear he needs reinforcements and a central midfielder, as well as a left-back, a striker and whatever position the currently injured Ross Barkley is best suited to.

Who is likely to come in?

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has agreed a fee but Liverpool remain interested as well. Danny Drinkwater is a long-standing target who should also join, while there remains interest in Alex Sandro, Fernando Llorente and Barkley.

Who is likely to leave?

Plenty have already gone, but Diego Costa could yet go back to Atletico Madrid

Crystal Palace

What they need

A striker surely has to be the priority, given Christian Benteke is the only fit senior forward on the books. Palace remain keen on another centre-half and a goalkeeper, possibly on loan, although the long-term uncertainty over the future of manager Frank de Boer complicates matters.

Who is likely to come in?

Palace are confident they have won the race to sign Mamadou Sakho, so impressive during his loan spell from Liverpool last season, in a deal worth around £25million. Tottenham's Michel Vorm is also a possibility.

Who is likely to leave?

Benteke has been linked with Everton, and Andros Townsend with Leicester, although selling either player would surely be madness given Palace's lack of attacking options. It is more likely that fringe players such as Damien Delaney, Bakary Sakho, Jordon Mutch and Jonathan Williams will depart on loans.

Everton

What they need

A striker and left-sided defender. The club is yet to replace Romelu Lukaku, their young strikers too inexperienced to carry the goalscoring burden. They are also short of cover at the back.

Who is likely to come in?

They have moved for Hadjuk Split striker Nikola Vlasic, and have also made an ambitious move for Diego Costa. Vlasic looks most likely.

Who is likely to leave?

Kevin Mirallas has been told he can go, and Ross Barkley will move on if a significant offer materialises.

Huddersfield Town

What they need

Huddersfield have already had a busy transfer window and filled the last remaining slots in their squad last week, so unless anything amazing comes up in terms of value for money for a proven Premier League player, it will be very quiet in the Pennines.

Who is likely to come in?

David Wagner said last week that he expected Abdelhamid Sabiri to be his last signing in this window, but the club then announced they had signed goalkeeper Rob Green from Leeds United. That, though, is likely to be that.

Who is likely to leave

Nahki Wells has been told he can leave and Burnley remain interested in the striker and will look to get him cheaply in the final few days of the transfer window. Veteran midfielder Dean Whitehead could also depart.

Busyness rating: 2/10

Leicester

What they need

Craig Shakespeare is looking for a new centre-half (preferably left-sided), plus a midfielder and forward if Danny Drinkwater and Islam Slimani leave the club.

Who is likely to come in?

Jonny Evans and Mamadou Sakho are both targets but wanted at rival clubs so a move for Middlesbrough's Ben Gibson could be back on. Sevilla's Steven Nzonzi is a long-term target, should Drinkwater leave, while there is also interest in PSG's Gzregorz Krychowiak.

Who is likely to leave?

Chelsea remain in talks over a potential deal for Danny Drinkwater while Islam Slimani, the record signing, is admired by Watford, Newcastle, Monaco and Marseille. At this stage, Riyad Mahrez appears likely to stay.

Liverpool

What they need

A centre back and another midfielder. The defender is most essential, and a midfielder will offer reassurance in the event of injuries to Jordan Henderson or Emre Can. Jurgen Klopp said he was only interested in elite quality in this area.

Who is likely to come in?

It’s a race between Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thomas Lemar, with Virgil van Dijk praying Southampton take the money to offload him.

Who is likely to leave?

Divock Origi and several youngsters, including promising winger Ryan Kent, on loan. Mamadou Sakho and Lazar Markovic must leave or renew a Main Stand season ticket.

Manchester City

What they need

A centre-half and, in Pep Guardiola’s eyes at least, another forward, but despite a huge summer splurge, City still look in need of cover at left back and a defensive midfielder.

Who is likely to come in?

Chile striker Alexis Sanchez, if Arsenal agree to take Raheem Sterling plus cash, and West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

Who is likely to leave?

Sterling, possibly. Eliaquim Mangala, Fabian Delph, Wilfried Bony and Jason Denayer.

Manchester United

What they need

A fast, top class wide player in the Gareth Bale mould who can change games and a left back who is also comfortable playing as a wing-back given Jose Mourinho’s misgivings about Luke Shaw.

Who is likely to come in?

Despite the summer links with Bale, Ivan Perisic and Danny Rose, Old Trafford insiders are not expecting any more incomings.

Who is likely to leave?

Midfielder Andreas Pereira looks set to join Valencia on loan. Ashley Young is more likely to stay than go.

Newcastle United

What they need

They will be monitoring the market closely in the hope of a breakthrough. A winger is the main priority, preferably one with the versatility to play on either flank. A left-back, a goalkeeper and a striker are the other areas Rafa Benitez wants to strengthen. So much, though, depends on whether than can sell anyone.

Who is likely to come in?

A loan deal for Chelsea winger Kenedy is in place, but has been held up at the other end. Iceland international striker Vidar Orn Kjartansson has been linked in recent days and there is some interest, but no bid yet. Udinese goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis and Crystal Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey have been mentioned.

Who is likely to leave?

Midfielder Jack Colback, centre-back Grant Hanley, goalkeeper Tim Krul and full back Achraf Lazaar have all been told they do not have a future, but it is unlikely Newcastle will be able to offload all of them in such a short space of time.

Busyness rating: 6/10

Southampton

What they need

Goals. Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin are reliable penalty-box predators but lack the mobility to pull defences out of shape. Shane Long possesses this, but is an erratic finisher. A fusion of their respective attributes gives you the ideal striker.

Who is most likely to come in?

It is very quiet in terms of incomings, but Southampton could do worse than inquire about old boy Theo Walcott. The forward has never played as part of a front two at Arsenal, and a partnership with Gabbiadini or Austin could prove a nice blend.

Who is likely to leave?

You may have heard by now - Virgil van Dijk. Southampton took a firm stance all summer, but the reality of keeping an unhappy player against his will starts to bite once the season starts.

Stoke

What they need

Stoke have done most of their business but could move for a wing-back and a box-to-box midfielder.

Who is likely to come in?

Stoke's pursuit of Fabian Delph seems to have been running as long as House of Cards and could happen in a loan deal.

Who is likely to leave?

Record signing Giannelli Imbula - remember him? - is being offered to clubs across Europe. Bojan and Philipp Wollscheid are also surplus to requirements.

Busyness rating: 5/10

Swansea

What they need

A creative midfielder is a must for Paul Clement after the £45m sale of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Swansea are also targeting a new defender and an attacking player.

Who is likely to come in?

Wilfried Bony seems certain to complete his return from Manchester City while a deal is ongoing for PSV Eindhoven defender Santiago Arias. Swansea's move for Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches is serious but ambitous.

Who is likely to leave?

Clement cannot afford many departures but the future of Fernando Llorente remains uncertain, with Chelsea and Everton considering late bids.

Tottenham

What they need

This is traditionally the period when Daniel Levy gets busy. They still need a right-back and there is some dead wood to be trimmed elsewhere but Pochettino likely to resist major changes

Who is likely to come in?

Ross Barkley remains a top target, but Chelsea could scupper that. Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain and Juan Foyth from Estudiantes are more likely arrivals.

Who is likely to leave?

Vincent Janssen could be jettisoned following a disappointing spell. Michel Vorm is wanted by Crystal Palace.

Watford

What they need

Attack and midfield look pretty well covered, but Marco Silva has made no secret of his need for a left-back as he seeks cover for Jose Holebas.

Who is likely to come in?

Rumours suggesting moves for Ashley Young and Alberto Moreno appear fanciful.

Who is likely to leave?

Fringe players. Jerome Sinclair is in talks with Sheffield United over a loan move, while Giedrius Arlauskis is also set to go. The chances of Miguel Britos departing also increased following his red card in the home draw with Brighton.

Busyness rating: 4/10

West Brom

What they need

Tony Pulis is targeting four more signings and wants to strengthen in all positions, with particular focus on the left-side of defence and up front.

Who is likely to come in?

Fenerbahce defensive midfielder Josef de Souza will join if work permit problems can be overcome. West Brom's business will depend on the £30m sale of Jonny Evans to Man City, with moves likely for Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho and City's Eliaquim Mangala. Don't rule out a late attempt to sign Watford captain Troy Deeney.

Who is likely to leave?

It seems inevitable that captain Evans will go, with Manchester City the most likely destination. West Brom could also offload No 2 goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, Callum McManaman and Sam Field (the latter on loan).

West Ham

What they need

A new manager? Three defeats has put Slaven Bilic under pressure and West Ham have already made their big summer moves. So far with, the non-availability of their home stadium, they have not worked.

Who is likely to come in?

Didier N’Dong is probably the most likely arrival, with the chances of a deal for William Carvalho having receded.

Who is likely to leave?

Big-earners such as Jose Fonte, Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho could all be cleared in an effort to ease the wage bill.
