A star-studded France team including Kylian Mbappe, Thomas Lemar, Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Olivier Giroud, Kingsley Coman and N'Golo Kante were forced to settle for a goalless draw in their World Cup qualifier in Paris on Sunday night.

Luxembourg, ranked 136 in the world, came into the game on the back of a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Belarus on Thursday, but nobody would have expected them to get anything from this game, against a team of world superstars.

France, who thrashed the Netherlands 4-0 on Thursday, had 34 shots to Luxembourg's three and hit the woodwork twice but had to be content with a draw that puts them one point clear at the top of Group A with 17 points from eight games.

France dominated from kick-off and had chances in the first half, notably when Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann rattled the crossbar from a free-kick five minutes from the break.

Luxembourg, however, resisted bravely and held out against a team made up of players from PSG, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, among others.

Djibril Sidibe came close to putting France ahead with a header on 63 minutes that Luxembourg goalkeeper Jonathan Joubert did well to save and Paul Pogba hit the crossbar with a header on 73 minutes.

The home side survived a fright five minutes later when a swift counter-attack from the visitors ended with midfielder Gelson Rodrigues striking the post with an angled shot.

Sweden are second in the group, one point behind France after beating Belarus 4-0 earlier on Sunday, with the Netherlands in third place, a further three points adrift after beating Bulgaria 3-1.

France play Bulgaria next while Sweden host Luxembourg and Belarus will entertain the Netherlands.
