Burnley 1 Crystal Palace 0: Frank de Boer faces sack as Palace become first top-flight side in 93 years to lose first four matches without scoring

Will Frank de Boer be turfed out after this defeat at Turf Moor? The oddness of this encounter is that Crystal Palace were undeniably the better side, were markedly improved from their crushing home loss to Swansea City which almost saw De Boer sacked as manager on the spot and there was the demanded compromise in formation, approach and personnel which made them feel far more familiar.

But they lost. Again. And they did not score a goal. Again.

Four games into this Premier League campaign and Palace have become the first team in its 25-year history, and the first top-flight team since Preston North End in 1924, to fail to register.

An away day at Burnley was always going to be a tough task to save your job but that is what De Boer faced in this most unforgiving of leagues.

What will hurt is the nature of the loss. If he goes then the Palace owners will stand accused of blundering in appointing him in the first place – no manager has ever lasted just four Premier League matches – and understandably so. But if the owners have shot themselves in the foot then the way this game unfolded proved another example of that happening on the pitch.

From the goal Palace conceded to the opportunities they spurned they were the victims of their own hapless downfall. They gifted Burnley the chance to go ahead and then wasted two golden chances to draw level and saw two others cleared off the line. Defender Scott Dann was involved in three of those incidents and when he somehow headed wide from just a couple of yards out, as he was found by Yohan Cabaye with a precise cross, it was the most profligate of all. He held his head in disbelief. It was in the 89th minute and it was desperate from Dann.

It was desperate from Palace at the start, in fact. In a game with so much riding on it they blew up. They blew it. The goal came inside three minutes with a woefully under-hit back-pass by Lee Chung-yong – making a first start since February and for some reason running back towards his own goal - presenting Chris Wood with the opportunity to score on his first Premier League start since his £15million move from Leeds United. Wood took it, sweeping the ball confidently, first-time past the onrushing goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey from a full 25 yards out.

It meant the New Zealand striker had – with his injury-time goal against Tottenham Hotspur on his debut – scored two goals within four minutes for his new club. Not a bad immediate return for Burnley.

Palace were in shock – although they could have quickly drawn level if Dann’s shot on the turn from a corner not been hacked off the goal-line by Matt Lowton. What was strange was how disjointed Burnley, who changed their own approach by playing two strikers, then became with their manager Sean Dyche later admitting that Palace, with Andros Townsend impressive, had been the better team.

Even so the game meandered for an hour, it was hardly as if Palace were dominant or urgent, with the visitors failing to capitalise on the loss of Burnley goalkeeper and captain Tom Heaton who fell awkwardly and suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder.

His replacement, Nick Pope, was making his Premier League debut and faced little pressure until, finally, the ball broke through to Christian Benteke, who kind of passed to himself, and who found himself clear on goal. The striker attempted to side-footed past Pope but the goalkeeper stuck out his left boot and superbly turned it away before, soon after, he beat out a drive form Cabaye.

Jeffrey Schlupp also blazed over and the agony for Palace was capped by Dann’s poor header which followed another shot from him being cleared off the goal-line by James Tarkowski. The efforts on goal count stood 23 to four – Burnley really did lack ambition - in Palace’s favour and they certainly did not deserve to lose. But lose they did with their players – who could not be faulted for their effort - slumping to the Turf Moor turf in frustration at the end as De Boer marched defiantly across it.

Burnley's good start continues

They were under a lot of pressure in the second half but saw off the South London side very well.  That's Burnley's second win of the season, building on opening day victory at Chelsea and a point against Spurs last time out. The home fans will be pleased. The away fans will be miserable, especially after that miss from Dann late on.

FULL TIME: Burnley 1 - 0 Crystal Palace

Michael Oliver blows the final whistle and makes it four defeats from four for Crystal Palace. They still haven't scored a goal. They worked hard to get their way back into this game but an awful pass back from Lee in the first half and a terrible late miss from Scott Dann mean Burnley take the three points.

Palace are the first side ever to lose their first four games without scoring a goal in the Premier League.

Time on ball (at full time)

Average touch positions (full time)

90+2 minutes

Michael Oliver wants a Palace throw retaken and he succeeds. Wood wins Burnley a corner. That should be that.

90 minutes

Three minutes of added time. Can Palace find a way through? It should be 1-1.

89 minutes

Should Scott Dann have scored that? Yes. That is as clear a chance as you want. Benteke heads down to find Cabaye on the wing, the Frenchman crosses to find Scott Dann, right in front of goal and...he heads wide. That is an awful miss.

88 minutes

One more Palace corner, lofted in by Puncheon. Palace can't break down Burnley. Cabaye takes a long-range shot, hit will, but it's straight at Nick Pope, who pushes it away comfortably.

87 minutes

Burnley camped in their own half, clearing the danger when it arises. Palace press on, searching for their first goal. Riedewald fires the ball into the box and it's deflected for another Palace corner.

85 minutes

Puncheon loses the ball on the byline. Burnley clear before Palace come straight back at them. Townsend takes a shot from the right edge of the box, deflected for another corner.

83 minutes

Lowton blocks a shot for a Palace corner. They've had plenty of these without threatening. The ball finds Scott Dann who fires a low shot from the right of the area, 12 yards out. It's cleared just before the line. Burnley see away the danger but Palace nearly found a way through.

81 minutes

McArthur comes off, to be replaced by Jairo Riedewald. For Burnley, Steven Defour is replaced by Ashley Westwood as their final change.

78 minutes

Benteke finds his way through the Burnley defence after some neat play but his shot from close range is saved by an excellent Pope, or rather his left foot. Palace's best chance of this half and probably the match. Still they wait.

77 minutes

Burnley have been the better side for the last 10 minutes. They win a free kick just in the Palace half. Palace win back the ball after it's taken and attack after Oliver plays advantage. Burnley belligerent in defence and the ball is cleared upfield. Palace are growing frustrated. McArthur commits a foul in the centre circle. Another Burnley free kick.

Time on ball (60 - 75 min)

74 minutes

Benteke clatters into Tarkowski in the middle of the field and receives a deserved booking.

73 minutes

Ashley Barnes finds himself in space on the edge of the Palace box and cuts back to curl it to the far post with his left foot. A good, if comfortable save from Hennessey. Just two attempts on target for both sides.

71 minutes

A Palace corner comes to nothing before the ball is crossed in again from the left. The ball finds Schlupp who, with a free shot on the end of the box shoots well over. Steve Parish chews his nails next to a disgruntled-looking Mark Bright in the stands.

70 minutes

The home crowd find their voice. They have every right to, they're 1-0 up and are growing in confidence.

67 minutes

Burnley are edging their way into this second half now. Schlupp stops a Burnley attack with a tackle on the left-hand side and the ball goes out for a throw.

65 minutes

Ashley Barnes replaces Sam Vokes for Burnley, Levi Lumeka comes on for Palace, in place of Lee.

64 minutes

Guðmundsson puts it wide out to Lowton on the right, who gets to the byline and puts in a cross gently. Nice move. It is defended by Burnley.

62 minutes

McArthur picks the ball up in midfield and swings it out to Townsend on the right. The wide man's cross is easily collected by Pope.  It looks like Ashley Barnes is coming on for Burnley.

Time on ball (45 - 60 min)

60 minutes

Burnley finally get into the opposition's half but a couple of chances come to nothing but a Palace goal kick.

58 minutes

Palace's pressure wins them a corner. Puncheon takes from the left-hand side. His ball is headed out by Chris Wood. Towsend collects and starts another attack before Benteke is called for a foul 30 yards out. He's not too happy about it.

56 minutes

Ten minutes into the second half and it's still all Palace. They haven't created much with it, though. Burnley have been hard to break down. The Eagles' wait for their first league goal this season continues.

52 minutes

Lee, Schlupp and Puncheon link up nicely on the left-hand side before Palace struggle to break down the home defence. Puncheon fires off a shot, which is deflected back down field.

50 minutes

Palace have started the second half with intent. Townsend looks keen to get involved. Burnley yet to see much of the ball on the first five after the break.

48 minutes

Townsend is fit enough to continue, after appearing to have strained his groin late on in the first half. He has had some decent moments and might be an important figure if Palace are to get their first points of the season.

46 minutes

Schlupp fires one in from the left and finds Benteke, who heads well wide.

SECOND HALF

A fairly even first half with one absolute disaster. That pass back from Lee will not have improved de Boer's mood one bit. Palace fought to get back into the match, having the better chances throughout the half. Stephen Ward caused them problems from the left, though.

The away team get things underway for the second half.

HALF TIME: Burnley 1 - 0 Crystal Palace

Palace get a corner from the right-hand side. It comes to nothing and Michael Oliver blows for half time. Chris Wood's early goal the difference, slotting in from a fair distance after an underhit pass back from Lee.

Time on ball (first half)

Average touch positions (half time)

45+2 minutes

Townsend takes a shot from 20 or so yards out. Deflected and safely into the hands of Pope.

45+1 minutes

Three minutes of added time after that Heaton injury. Guðmundsson  gets a cross in from the right, well defended by the Eagles.

45 minutes

Andros Townsend is getting into this game a bit more. He stretches his groin after another run. Doesn't look too serious.

42 minutes

A bit of sloppy play in the midfield from both teams. Cabaye gives away a free-kick down the left. Brady takes it for Palace with a decent delivery but offside is called. Lee commits a foul on Guðmundsson  just in the Palace half for another Burnley free kick.

38 minutes

A rare wasted and over-hit cross from the left flank from Stephen Ward. He has been excellent this half.

37 minutes

McArthur plays a crossfield ball which ends up with Benteke after a touch from Lowton. Fortunately for Lowton it comes to nothing.

36 minutes

Tom Heaton is replaced by Nick Pope, making his Premier League debut.

34 minutes

Heaton is still down and the stretcher is out. Burnley's medical and coaching team surround him before helping him back on his feet. The Burnley captain is ushered off to applause. Could be a shoulder that's popped out there, certainly looks like it.

33 minutes

Townsend makes a run into the Palace half before colliding with Brady. Lee hits a high cross which Tom Heaton takes comfortably, though lands uncomfortably on his left shoulder. That's a nasty one. Brady ends up with a booking for his challenge on Townsend.

30 minutes

Free-kick to Palace just outside the D, slightly to the left. Cabaye takes and it's straight into the wall. A poor effort, really.

Time on ball (15 - 30 min)

29 minutes

The sun has been out for the past little while now, making things look less autumnal. Palace fighting to get back into this but Burnley also looking dangerous, especially when Stephen Ward gets involved.

24 minutes

Almost. Almost. A dangerous ball fired in from the right and Brady was almost there for Burnley, but he's beaten to the ball by Joel Ward and it goes for another home corner.

23 minutes

Ward gets involved again after a pass out from Brady. His cross is defended and results in a Burnley corner, their first of the match.

20 minutes

Palace looking the more threatening now, spending the last few minutes in the Burnley half. Another corner, this time from the right.  Cabaye finds James McArthur whose glancing header goes a few feet wide.

17 minutes

Slight goalmouth scramble leads to a Palace corner. Dealt with by Brady before Palace break into the Burnley area which ends with a Burnley free kick.

Time on ball (0 - 15 min)

15 minutes

It's been an entertaining first quarter of an hour. Ward regularly looking threatening down the left flank.

12 minutes

Schlupp wins Burnley a corner from the left-hand side. Puncheon puts it out to Cabaye on the edge of the area, but he cannot control it, takes his shot but it is deflected for another corner. Burnley see off the danger momentarily before Schlupp makes it into the penalty area again. He couldn't get his shot away. Well defended in the end from Burnley.

9 minutes

Wood causing trouble for Palace's defence, here. He outmuscles Fosu-Mensah and is nearly through on goal before Scott Dan comes to the rescue.

7 minutes

Ward beats his man on the left flank and pings a ball into Vokes. Decent header down from Vokes but it goes wide. A frantic start at Turf Moor.

5 minutes

Townsend plays a great ball intoBenteke who rises and heads it down, just outside the post. Keeper might have had it but better from Palace. Close.

Crystal Palace have their first sight of goal

Crystal Palace respond to the earlier Burnley effort with their first shot of the game.

4 minutes

Scott Dann almost equalises right away with a powerful shot to the bottom right corner. Stopped on the line, though.

GOAL!

Chris Wood strikes early to open the scoring - it's 1-0 to Burnley.

2 minutes

Wood scores for Burnley after an awful pass back in midfield. Chung-Yong plays it straight to him and Wood plays it around Wayne Hennessey from around 30-yards out. A terrible start for Palace.

Kick-off!

The home side get things underway at Turf Moor.

Tough conditions for both teams

It's fair to say the weather isn't the best in Lancashire today. A combination of various amounts of wind and rain. Most players still in short sleeves though.

Ten minutes until kick-off

Is it silly to say this is a must-win for Palace this early in the season? Probably. But is it a must-win for Frank de Boer? Perhaps. It has been a very poor start for Palace and their new manager. An improved performance against Burnley would be a good start.

Sean Dyche speaking before the match

On this season's successes so far:
"We've got a bit more depth in the squad and experience in the squad."

On playing two up front:
"We want to be flexible. Today we think it's relevant with the two centre-forwards. We think it's worth changing [to two centre-forwards] today."

Head-to-head records

Palace didn't fare well against Burnley last season, losing both at home (2-0) and away (3-2).  Things were slightly better for the Eagles in the 2014/15 season, drawing at home and winning away.

Palace arrive at Turf Moor

Early season form

A very different picture for both sides so far. Burnley took a fantastic three points away at Chelsea on the opening day, going 3-0 up at half-time before winning  3-2. They then lost at home West Brom away before a late goal at Wembley secured a point against Spurs.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have yet to register a point or indeed a goal, losing 3-0 at home to Premier League newcomers Huddersfield first up. Then came a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. It didn't get much  better in their next game, either, as they lost 2-0 at home to Swansea.  A heavy defeat today could see them at the foot of the table.

De Boer under pressure

Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer is under pressure just three games into the Premier League season. The Dutchman replaced Sam Allardyce as Eagles manager in June this year but the South London side have lost all three league games this season - without scoring a goal.

Today's visit to Turf Moor presents de Boer an opportunity to relieve some of that pressure, with his team's first points of the season. The Palace manager cited Pep Guardiola's start with Barcelona and compatriot Louis van Gaal's early results with Manchester United as examples of managers who have turned it around and stuck to their principles. Read more of de Boer's thoughts in Sam Wallace's article.
