Everton fans could have been forgiven for turning up to Goodison Park on Wednesday evening and feeling a sense of familiarity with the Sunderland team.

Bizarrely, the visitors' starting XI for the Carabao Cup third round match featured more Everton caps than the XI men playing for Ronald Koeman's side.

Everton fan Jack Rodwell led the way with 109 appearances in the blue shirt after rising through the ranks of the club's academy, while Darron Gibson (69) and James Vaughan (60) also spent significant periods of their career at the Merseyside club.

Their total of 238 appearances for Everton dwarfed the 230 accumulated by a largely inexperienced XI Koeman fielded to start the match.

Muhamed Besic topped the Everton appearance charts with 53 caps, with Ashley Williams next on 48.

However, Jonjoe Kenny, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Sandro and Nikola Vlasic are all yet to make it into double figures in an Everton shirt.

Not that the statistic counted for much - aided by two goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in only his 24th appearance for the club, Everton won the match 3-0 to advance through to the fourth round.
