Spartak Moscow 1 Liverpool 1: Eight-year wait for away win in Champions League continues as 'Fab Four' fail to strike right chord

The greatest deception of Spartak Moscow came seconds before kick-off against Liverpool in Moscow.

Unfurling a banner which covered half a stand, the words ‘Win or Die’ instructed and warned the home players.

Ninety-eight minutes of retreat, after which the hosts somehow escaped with a point, exposed the sham. The Russians were relieved and elated having defied Liverpool with a combination of goalkeeping excellence and unforeseen profligacy from Jurgen Klopp’s attacking line-up.

It was another evening in Europe promising more than it delivered for Klopp, although it is inexplicable his side did not claim the victory.

This may yet prove a useful away point, but if there is an art to playing well and not winning Liverpool have mastered it.

Liverpool created plenty and yet again paid for their only blemish at the back. It a theme; it is habitual. There is so much to be excited about when they play like this, but without an end product they will only ever be admired rather than feared.

Despite packing his side with all the ammunition at his disposal, Klopp could only fling his arms in disbelief as the opportunities came and went.

It even needed two keepers to keep Liverpool out. First Artem Rebrov gave what must have been the performance of his career, and then when he was injured his deputy Aleksandr Selikhov defied the visitors with similar reflexes, particularly from a late Mohamed Salah header.

Rarely, if ever, could Klopp have seen such a one-sided contest go with such paltry reward, and he had to consider if this was luck or a lack of clinical edge. In truth, perhaps both.

“At this moment we are not the most lucky team in world football. We did really well against a defensive orientated team,” said Klopp.

“Both games we could and should have won. That is our fault. It was not a perfect game but there were a lot of good things.”

In all, 17 chances came and went. The list would take up this report, suffice to say Sadio Mane, Salah, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge were all culpable.

Klopp had said his answer to defensive vulnerabilities is to advance further forward. He was not bluffing.

In their 50 years of European travel, Liverpool could never have fielded such an attacking line-up. Whether the inclusion of so many creative players is considered bold, reckless, naïve or all three, it certainly deserved more.

Philippe Coutinho scored his second in two games, his road to redemption after summer tetchiness already paved with good intentions. But that cancelled out Fernando’s free-kick, Liverpool again looking suspiciously towards their goalkeeper – in this case Loris Karius.

There is an established blueprint for a tricky European away tie. Keep it tight, quieten the crowd, wait for home frustration to kick in and then pounce the longer the game proceeds.

Klopp evidently has a different perspective, and the way in which Liverpool dominated possession suggested the manager correctly calculated his defence would not need much protection. As ever with this side, a combination of squandering too many chances, and conceding under the minimum of pressure, ensured there was a dangerous familiarity to proceedings.

Spartak scored with their only attempt. Coutinho was adjudged to have fouled Aleksandr Samedov, and Fernando strode forward to hit the free-kick beyond Karius. At first glance it seemed the German keeper - preferred to Simon Mignolet on Champions League duty - was hesitant, regardless of how powerfully struck the set-piece.

One shot, one goal. That kind of consistency rate is alarmingly frequent for Liverpool’s defence, albeit none of the back four were culpable here.

There was no cause for panic at that stage, only 23 minutes played, and the response was impressive. When Mane ran, the Spartak defenders’ legs visibly wobbled. He combined with Coutinho to create the equaliser on 31 minutes. This was the kind of football which makes Klopp’s time so pleasing to watch; quick, incisive, penetrative and clinical. When they get it right it is marvellous, and Coutinho’s finish gave the advancing Rebrov no chance.

The chances kept coming; Klopp’s initially enthusiastic applause for his side going close turning to howls of frustration.

Substitute Sturridge should have won it in the last five minutes, and then Salah in the eight minutes of injury time, but dominance and frustration have become Anfield twins in recent weeks.

A draw was hardly a calamity, but Liverpool’s eight-year wait for a win in the group stage of this competition is extended. Despite this, Klopp is convinced his team will progress.

“Yes, I saw enough,” said Klopp.

“In both games we were the better side. They had some injuries and will have better players next time, but we are strong enough to go through and we have to do it.

“When the door is open you have to go through. Sometimes you have situations like this. Carry on, work hard and you succeed in the end.”

Well, I for one am glad to see the back of that

Liverpool by turns frustrating, frustrated, annoying and a bit unlucky. Let's get to the match report.  Cheers.

Average touch positions (90 + 9 min)

Full time: Spartak Moscow 1 Liverpool 1

Referee Turpin has had enough. I think we all have. A frustrating, sloppy night for Liverpool against a limited opponent.

90+ mins

Spartak have gone full rope-a-dope, allowing Liverpool to deliver ball after ball into the box. Alexander-Arnold tries, and fails again.

90+ mins

A deep ball is slung aimlessly into the Spartak box. Easy for the Spartak keeper. Liverpool seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that Andy Carroll still plays for them?

90+ mins

GREAT save! Trent A-A with the ball in, Salah meets it nicely with the header, but straight at the keeper from point-blank. Ought to have done better with the header.

90+ mins

Nice attack from Liverpool, breaks to Sturridge at the edge of the box, but he wants too long.

A second or two later, Firmino is clear down the left, has Sturridge and Salah there to pick out.. .but fails to find either.

90+ mins

Good play from Henderson, who has screened the defence really well, as he breaks up a counter.

90 mins

Number 99 is coming on for Sevilla! Do you get a flake? Welcome, Pedro Rocha Neves.

He comes on, eventually, for Samedov, who is making a right meal of hobbling off. Russians have been clever in slowing the game down, Liverpool are MILES fitter.

89 mins

No flag this time - and Sturridge has missed a great chance. Unmarked, in acres, but he shanks it.

Oh goody, eight minutes added time.

88 mins

Spartak's reserve keeper punches needlessly as Trent AA crosses for Sturridge. Causing more trouble than trying to catch it would have. He's not Duncan Ferguson, mate.  Just take it off his head.

Liverpool just cannot deliver a decent ball.

87 mins

Coutinho through, wriggly and tricky, but cannot find the angle for the shot. The Russian side are barricaded in now. They'll be happy enough with a draw I suppose.

85 mins

Firmino plays it through to Sturridge... who shoots wide. And is flagged offside.

83 mins

Popov is down, maybe with cramp, maybe tired, maybe he's got gout. I dunno. Anyway it looks like he is going to pop off.

Credit: BT Sport

Oh, hamstring. Is the diagnosis from Dr McManaman.

82 mins

Sevilla have thumped Maribor Stork Nightmare by three goals to none and take charge of the group.

Time on ball (60 - 75 min)

79 mins

Absolutely awful football from all concerned. Sturridge has the ball, support, and time in the area... but gives it away tamely. To Fernando, who attempts to dribble out of his own box and miscontrols it. To Firmino, who panics and smashes a wild shot, when he had loads of options.

Timewasters, frankly. I could have watched Spurs.

78 mins

Trent A-A breaks clear and BATTERS a shot goalward. Not on target, but boy was that travelling.

76 mins

Sturridge attempts to bundle through, but loses the ball.

75 mins

Firmino has fouled Eschenko. This game is actively bad now. Nothing is happening. I have nothing to tell you.

72 mins

Moreno and Salah with a nice one-two but the Spaniard gets it stuck under his feet.

Wijnaldum is replacing Can, who was pretty much mince throughout.

69 mins

Dan Sturridge is coming on, Sadio Mane is coming off.

67 mins

He is being wheeled off, he's suffering from guyfawking of the knee poor man.

Aleksandr Selikhov, the backup goalie, is on.

Slightly unfortunate choice of wording.

65 mins

Rebrov: still not okay.

64 mins

Rebrov's not okay.

He needs further treatment.

Time on ball (45 - 60 min)

62 mins

But here's Alexander-Arnold doing great work down the right, skips clear, and crosses.... ooh, it just needs a touch. Samedov and Mane go in for a challenge and hurt each other.

60 mins

Rebrov's okay. This game has rather lost its way.

57 mins

Mane with a clever ball through for Salah. Keeper out bravely, just gets there in time, but gets duffed up in the process. Rebrov needs treatment.

Reborv hurt, should Salah have had a pen? Credit: BT Sport

More than decent shout for a penalty that. Keeper seemed to touch him, and I didn't see the keeper touch the ball.

54 mins

Now Spartak break, Luiz Adriano to Eschenko on the right, and he hits a ferocious shot. Tipped over by Karius. Corner. Karius punches that clear too.

52 mins

Ref is a stickler. Coutinho has another freekick. Bends it up and over the wall, it's travelling slowly but is really accurate and right in the corner. Rebrov tips it away.

49 mins

Another niggly foul.  Liverpool have a chance to deliver a ball in. Moreno lofts the ball... nowhere near anyone of his team.

48 mins

Excellent atmosphere, again. But not a lot of football at the start of the second half. Turpin keeps halting the game.

46 mins

Second half begins and Liverpool have an early opportunity with a freekick after Salah is brought down by Fernando. But there is some pushing as the ball comes in.

Bocchetti booked for fouling Can off the ball

Half time: Spartak Moscow 1 Liverpool 1

Entertaining stuff, as it almost always is with Klopp's side. Liverpool's front four looking dangerous but.. imprecise, I guess would be the word. Spartak  are okay, with a bit more of a clinical approach, Liverpool could bury these. But final passes are going awry, runs are not being timed to beat offside flags, etc .

And as ever, Liverpool's defence gives you  a chance. Anybody's game.

42 mins

Liverpool on the back foot, Lovren has to concede a corner.

Liverpool break from said corner and have a counter attack of four, five players on two.

Ah, ruled offside. Sloppy, that.

37 mins

Amazing pass from Henderson, he absolutely smashes ten bells out of it and I dunno if it was a shot, but it turns into the most lethal cross you could imagine. It just hits Firmino on the thigh, could easily have pinged in.

34 mins

Ball's into the Spartak box, Salah is alone among a crowd of defenders, he hits the deck. I think he has a reasonable claim for a spot-kick there, looked to me like someone caught his heel. But referee Turpin tells him to stand.... and deliver. Shall I stop?

GOAL!

1-1: Philippe Coutinho scores the leveller for Liverpool and it is a really lovely thing. A quick, neat interchange with Sadio Mane, give and go, and then a clever, crisp finish. What a player that boy is.

Time on ball (15 - 30 min)

Meanwhile

Bale has scored a beauty for Madrid

27 mins

Mane's looking lively, and hits the target after a brisk, impressive move from the Red Men.

24 mins

Mane has the ball in the net but he is offside. Trent A-A's ball came in from the right, excellent cross, and a super finish. But the Senegalese had moved too soon and is offside, no doubt.

GOAL!

1-0! The opening goal goes the way of Spartak Moscow and it's Fernando who scores it with a glorious curling freekick. It's not fully in the corner, and there will be those who say that Karius might have done more...

Spartak Moscow hit back

Spartak Moscow have their first shot at goal, while Liverpool have registered five efforts so far.

21 mins

Liverpool been on top for 15 minutes or so, but here are the hosts making a rapier attack, and it's only halted by a foul. Fernando, their Brazilian midfielder, has a freekick in an appetising position.

Credit: BT Sport

16 mins

Two saves in 30 seconds for Rebrov. Salah with a shot. Not too hard.

But now Firminho with a header from point blank, and Rebrov's done well to keep that out!

Time on ball (0 - 15 min)

Neither Spartak Moscow or Liverpool are testing the goalkeepers so far

Tense opening quarter of an hour at Otkrytie Arena, as Spartak Moscow and Liverpool struggle to get shots on goal

15 mins

Liverpool will be happy with progress so far.

14 mins

Liverpool have had a couple of corners but not done a great deal with them. Coutinho here lofts the ball in from the left, goalie Rebrov, skipper for the night, gathers with authority.

12 mins

Coutinho plays it through, Salah has space but his touch lets him down. Fires weakly.

11 mins

Lovely link up between Salah and Trent AA, Alexander-Arnold arrives in the penalty area as bouncy and happy to be there as a puppy, but dogs his shot.

10 mins

Mane bright and busy down that left, beats his man Kutepov there. Has him on toast! But his Spartak colleagues hold firm.

8 mins

They make a racket these Russians! My God, what an atmosphere.

6 mins

Pasalic and Popov link up well with Adriano, clever quick play and they damn near smuggle the ball through.

First act of the evening for Mr Turpin is to book Emre Can, who has lunged in wildly on Bocchetti.

4 mins

Adriano with a chance to run, Matip prepares to meet him man to man, but several Liverpool players tear back to join in the defensive effort.

2 mins

Liverpool now get a chance, they're playing it around nicely, looking composed. Spartak are dropping deep and they're asking Liverpool what they've got.

1 mins

Kick off! Spartak enjoying some nice early ball. Spartak's gaffer was once assistant to Conte at Juventus.

He now watches his charges lose the ball.

Away they may be

But Liverpool would very much like a win after drawing their first game

Klopp speaks

One of the most positive hard decisions I have had to make, who to pick. Job of all of the other six to protect the back four, everyone is responsible for everything.

Spartak were the best side in their League last year. They qualified for this competition in a very tough game. Very experienced, good footballing side. They are not a long ball team or something. Short passes, they work hard.

They have had bad luck with injuries this season.

Referee tonight, Monsieur Turpin

Hope he doesn't make a you-know-what of himself tonight.

Or get involved in any highway robbery.
