Koeman dismissed after dreadful sequence of form

Monday, 23 October, 2017 614comments  |  Jump to most recent

Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Everton in the wake of yesterday's 5-2 defeat by Arsenal which left the team sitting in the relegation zone for the first time in 12 years.

A statement on the club's official website confirmed a decision from Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright that had become increasingly likely despite the recent vote of confidence in the manager from the Blues' major shareholder.

In addition to Everton's nose-diving form in the Premier League, the club are bottom of their Europa League group, having lost two and drawn one of their games so far, the worst such record for an English team in the competition to date.

Koeman arrived at Goodison Park in June last year billed as a marquee replacement for Roberto Martinez who was dismissed as manager following a similarly disastrous run of results.

The Dutchman, an experienced coach who had won the title in the Netherlands three times before coming to England, guided unfancied Southampton to seventh and then sixth place in the Premier League and was seen by Moshiri as the ideal candidate to take Everton forward.

Backed by unprecedented investment on the playing side and a club-record £6m-a-year salary, Koeman had been expected to steer the Blues into the Champions League but what he regarded as an initial three-year project derailed in dramatic fashion with five defeats in nine league games.

Everton's statement read as follows:

Everton Football Club can confirm that Ronald Koeman has left the Club.

Chairman Bill Kenwright, the Board of Directors and Major Shareholder Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the Club over the past 16 months and for guiding the Club to seventh place in last season's Premier League campaign.

The 54-year-old was insistent after the heavy loss to Arsenal that he was the right man to turn Everton's fortunes around but a visible loss of confidence among the players and no sign of an upturn in results forced the hierarchy to act.

Koeman took training as normal at Finch Farm this morning but was informed shortly afterwards by CEO Robert Elstone and Chairman Bill Kenwright of the Board's decision to terminate his contract.

He presided over 24 wins during his 58 games in charge, with 14 draws and 20 defeats. His backroom staff consisting of his brother and assistant Erwin, fitness coach Jan Kluitenberg, and goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks have also left their positions. First team coach Duncan Ferguson is believed to be staying with the club.

Everton face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday night where Under-23s manager David Unsworth is expected to take temporary charge alongside John Ebbrell.

Glad that he's gone. No idea how the team was trying to play all reason but no matter who we get in the club has issues that a manger change wont fix.

We need a striker. The fact the board didn't get one in is criminal. We cant fix that for another couple of months but one step at a time I suppose.

Personally I would love Tuchel.

Give Unsworth until Christmas and meantime try to persuade Silva to jump ship. If he wants the season before doing so, give Unsworth the job until then.

It's all so very sad to see Evertonian's celebrating the loss of the manager. I had high hopes for Koeman but it's true he had to go. He's got no idea what his best XI is or what formation we should play and he has chopped and changed and chopped and changed and unfortunately has not found any sort of combination. It has gotten worse and worse.

What's important is what happens now. I see only one immediate option and that is a caretaker situation but I have never known us in such disarray for many a year. We have already sold our best assets and the people we have brought in aren't up to the job yet.

Walsh and Kenwright, and Moshiri, do not come out of this very well either, for the most obvious reasons. A bad day in the club's history.

Thank gooodness he’s gone! A few weeks too late if you ask me.

It’s a huge decision for the club now. My preferences, the ambitious one would be Ancelotti. I think Dyche has earned his chance at a big club, he’s done excellent with Burnley and if he was called Seanio Dychez people would be calling for him to come. Thirdly, Unsworth with Big Dunc.

It would be a gamble but they are both well respected within the club and are blue through and through. Rhino has the youngsters playing with pace, hunger and confidence, what we lack in abundance. I don’t know much about Tuchel but he seems to be highly rated.

I think after the start to the season we've had, on top of the record spend in the summer, Ronald Koeman's position had, as the euphemism goes, become 'untenable.'

We now need to ensure his replacement is bang on the money right from the off, otherwise this could get messy.

Unsworth as the immediate temporary replacement and - who knows? - if he can get some results he could land the gig full time.

Steve Croston
14 Posted 23/10/2017 at 13:51:06
Okay, it's the news the majority of us wanted. But where from here??

Unsworth gets my vote on a temporary basis, but this time we MUST get someone with pedigree and a good track record.

Well done to the board for cutting their losses...Moshiri is not the ditherer some suggest.

Sadly, it was the right thing to do, he is in a results driven business and he wasn't getting the results. Almost impossible to see how he could have turned it around, his team selection was like a drunk man playing darts.

I sent the following email to Robert Elstone earlier this morning. Didn't quite expect such a quick reaction .Dear Mr Elstone,

I could have addressed this email to any board member, but as the CEO of Everton football club, I feel you are the most suitable person to address it too.

As the title of this email says "Enough is enough".

I have been supporting Everton football club for over 50 years, and have been a season ticket holder since season 94 / 95, and I have to say, apart from the period when Walter Smith was the manager, this season is the worst I have known.

Frustration, disappointing, disgruntled, use whatever adjective you like, doesn't come into it. In my opinion, we have the most loyal fans in this country, and right now Mr Elstone, only one word describes how we all feel right now. Anger, total anger, at the board and more importantly, at the manager, Ronald koeman.

As I say, I have been following Everton home and away since 94 /95 season, and, apart from the Walter Smith era, the football this season has been absolutely turgid, the worst I have known. The team looks clueless and show a total lack of confidence. The team line up changes from game to game, the formation changes from game to game, players are played out of position, too many players who play in the same position are being shoehorned into the team, I could go on and on. All this is down to one person, the manager Mr Ronald koeman. The man is totally bereft of ideas. Why is it he can't settle on a starting eleven, why is it he won't play with width and pace, and probably most importantly, why has he destroyed Ross Barkley? Here is one player, doing what thousands of lads on the streets of Liverpool who would give their right arm for, playing for the club he loves, being driven out of the club by koeman.

The biggest worry, for me personally, is the total lack of a goalscorer. I understand that this cannot be rectified until January at the earliest, but one problem can be rectified, SACK THE MANAGER, AND SACK HIM TODAY!! Bring somebody in, somebody who knows what they're doing, somebody who can instll confidence into the team, somebody who can select on a settled team and formation. It's obvious koeman is not going to Improve the situation, despite what he says, so it's up to the board to act, and act NOW! By the time the January transfer window comes round, it may be too late. We are now in the relegation places and if we are still there come January, I fear we will stay there.

So Mr Elstone, will the board show some bottle, and sack koeman? The man after all is a mercenary. He's has no feelings towards Everton football club. He's as good as said he was using us as a stepping stone towards the Barcelona managerial position. Well at the moment, he has absolutely zero chance of becoming Barcelona manager.

Finally Mr Elstone, I mentioned earlier about fans anger towards the board. Apart from not sacking koeman, (yet), for me, the biggest mistakes was the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, and not replacing him. I understand he wanted out, but the board showed no bottle in saying no to Manchester United .what are we, their feeder club .and when he was sold in early July, for far less than the club valued him at, why was a replacement not bought? There was still about seven weeks of the summer transfer window left, but all we wanted to do was try and sign Sigurdsson. No disrespect to Sigurdsson, an excellent player, but was not the player we needed at the time.

So Mr Elstone, I appreciate that you are a busy man, and I do not expect a reply to this email, but I do hope you take the time to read it and maybe pass it on to other board members for their thoughts.

Yours.

Robert Halligan.

We need a proper coach. Ancelotti is great at replacing intensive managers like Guardiola and Mourinho, but his usually loses his job because he is not hands on enough. Forget the name Ancelotti and explain why you think he would be able to fix things.

I want someone who can fix this on the training ground, as we cannot sign anyone for some time now, until the window opens. Pochettino would be the (unrealistic) dream. So let's get a similar manager in like Silva. Unsworth seems to be a good coach, perhaps evidenced by how he has developed the squad and maintained performances even as the players left. So, let's see if he can do it on a short term basis at least.

As happy as this makes me, Koeman's replacement has a real challenge on his hands with no recognised striker and a team completely shot of confidence and structure. Yes Steve, Ancellotti who has won league titles in Italy, Spain, France, Germany and England isn’t good enough for Everton.

Silva and Unsworth are the obvious choices considering their cvs and trophies won.

Ancellotti has a laidback demeanour compared to drama queens like Conte, Klopp and Guardiola but his winning record is second to none and, who hasn’t been sacked by Chelsea and Madrid? Munich, admittedly, was a shock but that was player power at work.

Ask the fans (except the Germans) where he’s worked and they all love him. Like I said to you before, he needs a top coach next to him. I’d give Unsy that job.

Oliver Brunel

58 Posted 23/10/2017 at 14:04:24
To be honest, Koeman never felt like a good fit as he proclaimed his ambition too loudly. Didn't understand the club and seemed to fail badly in the transfer market where he had more opportunity than anyone for 50 years. In the end it was a mercy killing. Sad to see someone lose their job, but this has to be in club's long term interest. Unsworth till next international break at the very least. Perhaps, he can work better with Walsh but transfer window is key as new signings are needed to balance the squad and the underachievers or unneeded can go.

62 Posted 23/10/2017 at 14:05:51
Give David Unsworth the job for 2 months. He's done everything within his power to prove his managerial credentials at u23 level. It's time for him to show what he can do for the first team now. If it doesn't work out, fair enough, have a new manager in place for the start of the January window. I wouldn't be opposed to a fresher, up-and-coming manager such as Sean Dyche or Eddie Howe taking over.

One thing to bear in mind - Everton never win anything without an Everton man, a former player as a manager. Joe Royle the last manager to win a trophy. Howard Kendall before that obviously a legend as was Colin Harvey (won the community shield, a trophy of sorts, as manager). And Catterick before him. Managers from outside the club never win trophies with Everton. Yes, it's a new era of football. But some things never change.

Colin Ancelotti is a great manager for the reasons you said, but he's got a certain style of management. All of the clubs you listed sacked him and he was criticised for his coaching.

We need a coach. This must be sorted out on the training pitch. We don't want a hands-off manager. We just had one of them. We need these players drilled hard. The lack of coaching was so apparent due to the way we played, the runs made and the defending. So we need to identify someone who can sort this out. I don't care whether it is Silva or Tuchel or someone else, as long as they do their homework and get a top coach in.

Given the clear message which has appeared recently: the manager lost the confidence of the players and the crowd, I would say that the only same move will be to get someone who knows what the problems are agree who can get the crowd and players onside.

This has to be Unsworth. He knows the club he knows the players and the crowd love him for his association with Everton. He has also won stuff and his U23s are probably the best in the country. He actually does know how the run a team.

As for Walsh, I don't know too what degree he was associated with the farcical transfer nonsense – but I see no reason to blame him for the on field fiasco.

We have to accept that this team is totally devoid of confidence and leadership. We are in a serious predicament at the wrong end of the table and at present where are we going to get points let alone goals ?

Whoever comes in has got a hell of a problem and job to do just to steady the ship. The last thing we want is a manager who has NOT been in this position before. What top manager would consider coming here just now? It is not fair to put all this shit on Unsworth until the team and Club have stabilised.

I hate to say it but to me it's Allardyce until the end of the season. He has the experience and know-how to get Clubs out the shit. It also gives us plenty of time to, hopefully, make the right choice for the long haul.

Nine games in, we aren't in a relagation battle, so relax a bit. Maybe if we are in the bottom three at Christmas then we can call it that.

We have a decent squad but round pegs aren't being played in round holes. A new manager won't be swayed by their ego of having to play the vanity projects of Siggurdson or Klassen. Maybe Mirallas and Lennon might get a start, maybe Gueye and Schniederlin won't be forced into the same starting line up. Ross might stay...

Steve, I’m too chuffed to get into an Ancellotti debate. I’m just made up this dour man (made Moyes look almost human) has finally gone and we can get someone in to breathe life into the cadaver.

Has there been a statement yet?

Moyes 3/1. Surely the cretins wouldn't hire a manger who has had the boot from his last 3 jobs? nah, not even Everton could do anything as stupid as that. Could they?

What's all this talk in the media and on here about the return of Moyes?

Yes he knows the club but really? With his recent car crash of a career, it would be us doing him a favour, which given our league position, we shouldn't be doing. Never go back.

I'd like Rafa if he'd come to us. Unsworth would be a popular choice and would be cheap because there'd be no compensation. Pellegrini or Mancini would do me. Coleman wasn't great at Fulham. Martin O'Neill will want a shot at the World Cup and wasn't great at Sunderland. Ancelotti is dreamland. He wouldn't come to us.

Moyes II, Allerdyce or Pardew and I'm done. You might as well add Steve McLaren to the list.

He steadied the ship last year and got us to seventh or best of the rest. who's responsible for the purchases and lack of purchases in key areas is still up for debate.

Nonetheless - correct decision because there was just no way he was going to turn this around.

All Evertonians who live in the vicinity of Goodison Park please man the barricades being erected around the ground. I don't get the "Ancelotti was underachieving" reasoning. He was at clubs like Real and Bayern with big egos that can win without him and did just that. Why would his methods not be good for us when we aren't even winning as much? He might have a problem with big egos but we're not at that stage. As for whether he wants us, I'm sure the "full control" option will attract his attention alongside a large paycheck. I personally prefer Tuchel before Ancelotti. EPL experience is overhyped in my opinion. EPL is evolving way to quickly to have a type.

I dare say there are mitigating circumstances for him feeling a little aggrieved but frankly there was no way in heaven and earth he was able to fix what he had fucked up. I hope Kenwright does not call Moyes, but I bet Moyes has already called him... fly on the wall anyone?

It would be just so Everton to reappoint him wouldn't it?

I guess it depends on how the board view the situation, early days, give David Unsworth a chance with Joe Royle and Duncan Ferguson, I swear it would be a better team to watch but not sure if they are up for it.

Big Sam would smack of a team in dire trouble needing a saviour from relegation, which actually is true, even if I don't want to admit it. But a better bet than untried David... If the board are on the ball another candidate may well have been chosen already, but since when have the board ever been on the ball..

I do feel relief.

The very fact that Kenwright's name is used first in this announcement tells you all you need to know about this club and where the problem lies. This man has presided over the joke that we have been since the early 90's.

Until he is removed it will never get any better I'm sad to say. He has no business acumen or footballing savvy other than a steely determination to remain the main man at Goodison, running an outdated, old gentleman's club while we slide from one of the 'Big Five' and into oblivion.

Get that aeroplane ready – in fact, get a whole squadron... the man is an egocentric embarrassment who's time is up.

Steve, the commentary on the game said Everton have only had one manager with less than 100 games - Walker. So they thought there was a chance Koeman would get more time.

Steve Brown - I have ambition for our club, that's why I don't want Ancelotti. He is not the type of coach we need. He takes over established teams and carries on winning for a season. He never rebuilds teams. We need a hands on coach to drill this lot into a formation and game plan. Ancelotti is not that man.

And do you honestly think if we approached him he would seriously consider it? Name a time he has gone to a team not in the CL? Or when has he taken on a team in a relegation fight?

John @ 75; I believe Unsy would look at the current shitstorm as a omce in a lifetime opportunity and he would grab it with both hands. Whether he has the mettle, charisma, patience, style, personality, skill, etc., to carry it off is another matter. Judging from his track record within Everton I believe he has.

Sometimes things that fit happen without really trying to force it. I personally absolutely love the guy and his approach to the Everton and football in general.

I don't feel sorry for any of them, any supporter would manage Everton and do a better job than Koeman, ffs. Martinez walked away with a 10 million payoff for being shit and he went on to manage Belgium. Koeman will get about £8 million payoff for being just as bad and will get the Holland job! How can you be so richly rewarded for failure, it's unbelievable!

The fans who go to home and away games should be rewarded for watching the rubbish these two managers serve up, how about some free tickets to the next Europa League game paid for by Martinez and Koeman from their payout!

(Copy pasted from my other post earlier today - easier than retyping!)

D Unsworth I believe is absolutely our best choice in the immediate future as caretaker without the pressure or expectation that it is necessarily a permanent berth. I am sure he will respect and understand that and will be willing to step aside if and when a more experienced top manager can be attracted in a few weeks.

He may, however, turn out to be God's gift. Unless we try we will never know, but whoever it is, they have got to get this bunch of misfits working properly if we are to remain in the top flight. We remain in a dogfight now with (as I said on another thread this morning) only 18 points from our last 19 games. Thankfully we've got 3qtrs of this season left.

Steve Ferns
152 Posted 23/10/2017 at 14:36:35
If we really are in a relegation dogfight, can we not keep Big Sam in reserve until January, and see if Unsworth can prove you wrong and push us up the table? If it doesn't work out for him, then Big Sam or someone can come in with the window open and save us.
Alex Rowe

This is the right decision and I for one am happy it has been made. If the performances were good but the results against last seasons top 6 were not going our way it would have been a different story. But the performances have been awful, and that goes for the European ties and against the so-called lower clubs as well. He had to go.

I really hope Unsy is given a decent chance to prove what he can do. He has done brilliantly with the U21/U23 side and deserves a chance to see if he can transfer that to the first team in my opinion.

The players should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves but I guess they have done what players do when things don't go their way.
That said Ronald was indeed only looking at us as a stepping stone and showed no sign of ever "getting" what we are about. No rapport with the players, no rapport with the fans and whatever it costs us to sack him will be recouped if Barkley now signs a new deal and therefore doubles his transfer value overnight.
Ultimately only the club matters and having been given such a huge sum of money to spend he was negligent in not buying a replacement for Lukaku before anyone else. I think the absence of Lukaku has been overplayed to a degree - had there been an established pattern of play with width and pace we would have scored more goals. The RS don't have a striker as such yet have no problem scoring goals and I am sure that if we created more we would score more and don't get me started on the defence!
A good decision taken after giving him a decent enough amount of time to show signs of turning it round - now for the hard part!!
I don't want a foreigner - we've tried two now without success. Get a Brit in who understands the club and its heritage and the expectations of the supporters. Unsy deserves a try - if not what more does he have to do? Let the CEO run the club and Unsy run the first team - he has the knowledge of the youngsters to know who to play and he knows Everton and Evertonians. If he can't put a smile back on everyones face and get people to play to their potential then I don't know who can.

I think the writing was well and truly on the wall yesterday and to be fair to the board they've acted swiftly. It seemed like the right time to make a change. It was a defining week with the games against Lyon and Arsenal and getting hammered at home made Koeman's position untenable.

Hopefully the link with David Moyes is lazy journalism. We wouldn't have him back...Would we?! I think BK probably would but this would show a complete lack of ambition.

I want us to get a Ancelotti. If we're serious about getting back to the big time he is the man we need so Moshiri needs to sell the club to the Italian. It's unlikely he'll come, but if you don't ask, you don't get, as my dad used to always say. The other names are Thomas Tuchel and Sean Dyche. Any of the aforementioned would be good choices in my opinion.

The other early frontrunner is David Wagner. That's an interesting link. Tbh, apart from Ancelotti, Tuchel and Dyche. I'd prefer to give the job to Unsworth until the end of the season.

Just got in and heard the.news , at last the board finally saw what a complete and utter fraud Koeman is , never rated him and was a poor appointment by Moshiri .

I should be sat here feeling smug and say " I told you so" however the mess he has left behind is nothing to be smug about ! I told anyone that would listen last year and posted several times on this website that Koeman was not the right man for Everton FC , only a few others voiced their displeasure at his appointment.

As for the football we have had to endure over the last 14 months I can honestly say apart from the fluke 4-0 Man City game I have not enjoyed any game under his leadership and his brand of football made Bobby brown shoes tika taka look positively magical !!

So glad see the back of the man , so many memories of my time living in Barcelona watching him dismantle a good Valencia side it was like history repeating itself .

Now who to get in , first get Unsworth to take charge and get some organization and fire in the bellys of our first team and then I quite like the idea of Paulo Fonsceca who David Israel on this site suggested yesterday but please please not Moyes or Big Sam !!

Good news as I believe Koeman was going nowhere fast (other than relegation team).
Moyes being bandied around, - it may be the board will bring him in as an interim manager until they find their target - not sure if Moyes would do this, but its not being kicked around without there being some truth to it.

I know many will not want it, but our target this season has to be to get out of trouble and move up as quickly as possible - bringing in someone who has experience of the club might seem like a good move to the board. I am not saying I agree. The option of Unsworth/Dunc would be interesting - but taking control of 1-2 games at end of season is not same as taking control to end of season.

Just playing Devil's advocate on this.

If Moyes comes back then I'm seriously done - just can't watch us setting up to try to nick points off the Sky 6 and being told that's our place.

Big no to Allardyce - his style of football is appalling and his CV sucks. No to Dyche also - Mike Walker would spring to mind with that appointment.

Need to go after the heavy hitters and show the club means business: Ancelotti or Tuchel - just pay them what they want before this season comes down to the FA Cup hope and a relegation battle.

I’d have Unsy as assistant to Big Sam... give him the biggest club job of his career with something to prove.
On a side note Koeman can’t be happy with the job Walsh did... unless he asked for 8 number tens and a half useless full back.
The clamour for us to play with 1 defensive midfielder.. well that’s what happens when you have an arsenal team running at will at our defense.
And on another side note, Koeman you blues t-shirts now on sale !

Before Everton jump in right away, would it not make sense to give Unsworth and Royle a go, they know what it means to Everton football club, they know how to get a team to fight, how to set up a team to compete and win, they both understand what it means as an Evertonian.

If they get results, keep them there on a month to month basis, but at least give them up until December before going full out on our next manager, I would rather wait a few weeks, instead of jumping in straight away for someone who we may already have at our club.

Reading the posts one could be forgiven for thinking that the biggest syndicate on record, had won the largest lottery to date.

Well, I was only saying before, that something had to happen before it was too late.

It will be a difficult task for whoever gets the job, with survival at the top of the agenda, and anything above can be considered a bonus.

The only downside, which doesn't have too much impact on us really, is he walks away with a fat wedge, reward for failure in my eyes.

If he was anything of a man he should give the compensation back to the Club, as an apologetic gesture, for the embarrassment he has caused, and the Holy Grail blown.

Funny how different managers can make fans say they're done. I was 'done' on the hiring of Martinez. Just took me two seasons to accept it.

Moyes seems a broken man after his last three appointments, the fire has gone. If Everton reignited it I'd be happy, I'm just not sure it will. MKII are Jaguars, not managers.

I do hope Unsworth will get a chance even if it only a stop gap. Moyse was good for us but he is the "Past", not the future. I would really hate to see Ancellotti or any one like him come in. How is anyone mentioning Moyes and keeping a straight face? Or rather a straight neck, because when it gets mentioned to me my forehead wants to drop to the desk. If that's the ambition of the club then we should officially change our name and motto to Plucky Little Everton - God Loves a Tryer.

Unsworth would be good if he can command the respect of the senior players but I'd be worried he's too close to the likes of Jags and Baines who are chronically underperforming and for me, are central to the problem of complacency and apathy. We've got a few senior players who need a colossal kick up the jacksie. No more sad little soundbites about how we are focussed on putting it right.

Not sure he'd come but Ancelotti until the end of the season would at least put a red hot poker up the crevice of any player that thinks he's too senior to work his bollocks off. He wouldn't be mates with anyone meaning the entire squad would need to impress him.

We shall see...

Ok, you’ve convinced me. Ancellotti out!!!

I think it was significant that both Unsy and Moshiri were at the game yesterday. Moshiri probably asked him for a diagnosis before naming him interim manager.

Unsy needs to put his arm around Ross and get him to stay. Then he needs to do the same with Klassen and Sandro and give them a few games with the U-23 team until they get up to speed. And last, but not least, he needs to rotate Rooney and Siggurdsson in the number 10 role as it’s obvious they can’t play together.

We need DCL and Niasse to hold the fort until a proper forward is brought in in January.

If we beat Leicester on Sunday we are midtable, win back to back and we are top half. Relegation talk is premature. All we need to focus on is winning the Chelsea game, then the Leicester game and take it step by step, We will wait until the international break before getting a new guy in, and meantime we can give Unsworth a chance to show he can win.

Don't forget, Unsworth won his last game in charge of the 1st team 3-0, and did so playing kids like Kenny, and that was 18 months ago.

When we talk about 7th finishes last year , people seem to forget he went on a piss poor similar run from the Norwich game and it was only due to the good start and the crap around us that kept us in that part of the table. You can't be paid an obscene salary , spend the money he did (forget the net spend shit) and go on 10-12 game runs like he has and then keep hoping it turns around. It's not acceptable.

And what is Ferguson's position because he has been a big part of the last two failed regimes.

Sadly this is the best news we've had this season, most of us sussed the guy out months ago and said so but those who appointed him totally ignored the fact that he was just not good enough as he dragged us from game after game of frustration humiliation and despair with his inability to instill confidence and unite players both on and off the hallowed turf of Goodison.

Only time will now tell if we can recover our belief and confidence in pulling ourselves together, under a still inept system 'upstairs' who are responsible for this shambles and who have made a mockery of our proud, NIL SATIS NISI OPTIMAL motto, COYB

I had hoped Koeman would get us out of this bad spell, but it was difficult to defend him after a 5-2 arse-kicking at home again. Its reached a stage where I don't know where or when we will win a game, the performances have been so bad. I still think there were lots of factors playing against Koeman this season, but now is the time to focus on his replacement. I assume Unsworth will take over for now and what a first game in charge, Chelsea at Stamford Bridge!! Get a win and its no better game to get moral boosted and kick off a fresh new start.

I do feel Steve Walsh should shoulder the blame for not replacing Lukaku. Koeman can be blamed for what happened on the pitch (or what didn't happen), although the players should be ashamed too. However, EFC must have known long before the summer that Lukaku was not signing a new contract and was leaving. Walsh is responsible for transfers and he had all the time he needed to find a replacement and make a plan B, C and D.

It seems Giroud was the only real contender and he decided to stay at Arsenal and yes, there were whispers of Diego Costa but it's difficult to attract top strikers to a club not playing in the Champions League. I also feel Walsh wasn't negotiating with other clubs, but rather paying whatever they asked for. I think all the signing this summer were positive, but I feel we paid over the odds for most of them. Walsh may have introduce a couple of decent players to EPL via Leicester, but the priority for EFC was replacing Lukaku and he failed to do that.

Sorry to see Koeman's reign end in such a bad way, I was extremely excited when he joined. I wish him all the best and thank him for last season. I can't say I'm surprised with the current list of contenders to replace Koeman, but if Moshiri wants to attract top players to the club, he needs to bring in a top manager those players will know, respect and will want to play for. We also need to think about players we currently have who might have signed because of Koeman, will they want to stay at Everton or look to move on in January?

Got to be Unsworth for me. I know he does not have Prem experience (other than one game), but he knows most of the players, all of the youth players, has the club in his heart and knows exactly what is expected of him. Plus, how is he to get experience if not given an opportunity.

Tuchel would probably be my other favourite, but I do not think he is likely to come here.

I too am now looking forward to the next game! It's been awhile too...

Allardyce? No.
Pardew? No.
Benitez? No for two reasons, his little club jibe doesn't deserve to be forgotten. Secondly , why would he leave Newcastle when they are facing the exciting prospect of a new owner pumping money in.
McClaren? Are you joking?
That leaves Dyche, Hughton, Howe and Wagner. All have a strong case in theory; in practice Everton are a difficult club to manage. We, the fans want a team that has at least parity with Liverpool, we expect to challenge, perhaps unreasonably, for a top four place.Yet we haven't quite got the resources to muscle in on that status. All the above are experts in building defensive stability and strong team spirit, which is urgently required at the moment, but beyond the short term they are unproven in building a team that could challenge higher up the Premiership and get a European place, even a Champion's League place.
To be honest, I'm not sure that Unsworth or Ferguson are the answer, but they may be cheap and that may be a factor.

Steve Walsh said himself in the summer that he has to CONVINCE Koeman to sign a player. It is not up to him. He can only give Koeman names, and Koeman chooses them. Sometimes Koeman gives Walsh names, and Wlash has to get them. These guys included Klaassen and Sigurdsson for sure. Sandro was a Walsh signing for sure.

If Koeman comes out and says that Walsh wouldn't sign the people on his list (and they are realistic and not the likes of Messi or Neymar), then fair enough. But as Koeman has the ultimate decision, the buck stops with him not with Walsh. Let's see how the next guy does, and if it's the same old, then let's point the finger at Walsh. Right now, we simply do not know. All we can be sure of is he has made a lot of swift and decisive young signings for the youth team.

Koeman was supposed to be the manager to take us to top 4, how wrong we all were. He goes away with Guided Everton to 7th place in the prem on his CV. It was his team and his tactics that has got us to bottom 3. That has left a mountain to climb for the next man in the door. I like everyone else has no idea who is being lined up, but the players now need to step up and play their part in the turn around.

Do the club now advertise that they are looking for a manager and see who applies, and that means that Unsworth may only be wanted as an interim coach while they are choosing. Coaching a 23 and under team is a long way from managing a premier side, (with if we are led to believe ) a very ambitious owner.

Other people may know, when the manager has been fired. how many 2nd team coaches in the premier have been successful.

We have been clamoring for Koeman to be fired for quite some time and I believe the club has got to find an experienced manager who has to understand he has landed in a mess, and will need all the experience he has gained in top flight football to get us out of it while slowly rebuilding the confidence in the players.

Reading comments we all have personal views who we should hire but as supporters we have to understand what a mess Koeman has left and while Unsworth may steady us to a mid table position we need someone with extensive knowledge of Premier and European football to take us to a higher level.

We have been managed with to much mediocrity in the past, if the owner is as ambitious as we are to believe ,,don't make to quick a decision, and make sure we get the right person and not a manager that will just do it for the money or advancement to another club but someone who can leave a successful established Premier and European side when he retires.

I would then try to get Sean Dyche, as he has experience of the Prem, has produced good attacking football on a shoestring, and quite regularly beat the 'big guns too' .

Just imagine if he had some money, what he could achieve, that is if there is any left.

Failing that David Wagner, although he is a relative newcomer to the top table, for the same reasons as Dyche really has produced a decent side capable of beating the top sides, on a limited budget.

I'm a bit sad about all this - Koeman should be a good manager, and I think he can be. There were loads of mistakes made during the summer, not just by him, and he is in some ways the fall-guy as is always the way in football.

I'll admit my eyes did light up just now when I read the news though, as a change did need to come.

So now what? I'm honestly quite confused as to what the club does at this point, since they don't (so far in the last hour) appear to have anyone lined up. Unsworth would bother me in the medium to long term, but likely to be the man to step in while we look for a permanent new manager.

I still don't like the idea, since he's going to inherit a pile of shit to sort out and still won't have Barkley, Coleman, Bolasie or a striker of any note to use. Tough gig if you ask me, and I also can't see many managers on the outside looking at the Everton job as a plum one right now either!

I am not speculating for who to come in. I'm more interested to see Barkley signing his new contract now. If he did, we would have a much clearer picture what really went on behind the scene.

Can’t believe people calling for Unsworth to be given anything other than a caretaker role.

Why not Dave Challinor or Alan Devonshire, they won the Vanarama North and South Leagues. Both more impressive than U23s.

Maybe we could lure the Skem U11s manager to work alongside Unsy as a sort of dream team.

If Moshiri wants a top 4 finish next season then we need a top 4 manager. Look at Conte, Guardiola, Mourinho and Klopp’s CVs and if the candidate dosn’t measure up (like Koeman’s didn’t) then he is not suitable.

Please god not Dyche - I like the bloke but seriously? Another manager from a shit team? When will Evertonians get some balls about their aspirations? I don't mean to be rude to you all above, but we should be looking at managers that have won things, managers that understand a big club mentality, not lower leagues, or managers that build teams with a good work ethic.

Fuck that. I want the best, not middle of the road managers with no track record.

People are saying give unsworth a go as a caretaker and see how he does in the meantime.

Why could it work? Because most of the team are young, he has worked with them before. He knows them. He can hit the ground running. He should be able to get a response out of them.

Also, he has managed one premier league game before and won it 3-0. He also won the PL2. He has developed a lot of players in a short time. He should have respect of the senior pros and the likes of Wayne Rooney will respect him as a player he used to watch. So, I think he should be given a fair crack at a few games and then take it from there.

Benitez is definately an interesting one.
Theres no doubt hes an excellent coach, his CV is testament to that abd ges worked wonders at Newcastle.
Garth Crooks at the weekend even stated that if he had the resources he could win the league with NUFC...HA!
I wouldnt go that far but I know what he means.
With the right players and recources he will mold a very good team to challenge tge top 4..
It doesnt really bother me whos manager he was previously.
Its all about whats best for THIS CLUB.
In football terms thats all that should matter..
The big questions are...would he be asked and would he come?
I wouldnt be upset or against him coming but my personal choices would be Tuchel or Silva.
I want a bold manager for the long term.
The same questions arise..would they be approached and would they come?
If the incentives are there I think they would.
This appointment is probably the most crucial in the last 30 odd years.
It has to be the right one which is why I don't think there will ve a rush to choose.

Ha! Not satisfied by criticising Vlasic on the Live Forum yesterday, Steven Astley uses the Koeman Sacked thread to lay into Vlasic again.

Considering the number of under-performing players in our squad, you target a 20 year old Croat who has half a dozen starts under his belt. Talk about picking a scapegoat and sticking to it...

I've been impressed by Vlasic. In a poor and static team at least he has a go and runs with the ball; if some of the others made decent runs off him then his end product might be better.

Strange this. Although elated for all the reasons discussed on this site for weeks it really does feel like starting again like another poster said

Just when we’ve cleared out the deadwood who will a new manager want to clear out? I’d say Pickford Keane Coleman baines (for now) gana vlasic lookman, sig, Rooney Davies lookman and dcl are safe. Everyone else could be gone.

So another complete rebuild of the squad which means we’re miles away from top 4. The last 3 months have been so bad for this club.

Unless someone like anceloti can gel the current lot and get them playing better attaxking football and it turns out to be koeman who was holding them back. Actually no idea which is it

Andrew James
272 Posted 23/10/2017 at 15:49:12
This is important. When we brought in Moyes it was a great move and a brave one given where we were in 2002. Martinez was a lazy choice. Koeman a convenient one and looked more like a status symbol for our new owner.

Since 2002, we're now a richer club with a better if unbalanced squad.

This reminds me of when Spurs hired their current manager. They'd struggled with a raft of signings and had the players from about 3 different managerial reigns. Sound familiar?

We need someone to come in and fix the system, get the youth players firing and manage the likes of Barkley, Davy, Sandro and Keane to their full potential. It doesn't have to be a name, it can be from left field. I don't care what their nationality is. They cannot be given more and more money. We don't need a facelift. We mostly have the personnel and more coming down the line with Kenny and Dowell.

But they have to be able to manage with what they have and get the optimum out of that. Neither our last two managers were able to do that and probably got by courtesy of Lukaku, Barkley and the defence. That is why we have an eccentric squad and have witnessed so many abject runs in the last 3 seasons.

There is a lot to be positive about but what the board now do is crucial. If they get this right, we could be in the top group within 18 months. Get it wrong, and we would have become like so many of the other clubs who fritter away millions on players and managers that we, before now, were happy not to be.

Paul, on the face of it you're right. However, that is potentially the same back four that finished last season but with a better keeper behind them and the addition of Keane. With proper coaching there should be no reason why they can't repeat the defensive performances from last season when they had the 6th best defensive record in the Prem, despite conceding 7 goals in the last 4 games when we took our foot off the gas . a new manager with more defensive nous than Koeman has shown this season should be able to rectify the deficiencies that now exist. All good sides start with a good defence.

Think you need to accept that we aren't a big club. We haven't been since the 80s. No big name coach will touch us as they want an established squad, in a safe position that they can throw money at to make 2 or 3 tweaks and hopefully win something else for their CV.
We are not currently a top 6 squad, we couldn't be further from it. We need someone who is driven and ambitious that can rebuild us into a top 6/7 team next year and push on. The big names like Ancelotti are not this person as they want an easy ride at an established team. We need someone who will get their hands dirty and put some blood and sweat in to beat this lot into a team that know what to do on a pitch.
People still seem to think we are a "big club" and have some divine rite to expect to win the league each year and have the worlds best manager. We all want the club to succeed and win things, however some of us are realistic and realise we can't compete with the City, Utd, Chelski money etc. We may have spent big this window, but they have been spending big for years, and their base squads are light years ahead of ours.

Big Sam, and the rest of the dogfighters are quick fixes though. So big Sam wins a couple of games, what then? Big Sam has never been one to consistently deliver top 6 finishes. He was at Newcastle and failed badly. Why? Because he does not know what to do when the other side drop back and invite you to come at them. Big Sam is best when the other side attack you and you drop deep and fight them. Also Big Sam is well over 60 now, he's not got the energy for a dogfight. He said so.

This isn't a quick fix. This is a long term job. We need someone young, hungry and prepared to put big effort in on the training pitch. That is where we sort this mess out. We need a tracksuit manager to get these guys fit, because they are not fit, we need to run pressing drills and press as a team. We need drills to work out how to move the ball when we win it, we need to make these footballers play without thinking. We need to dramatically up the tempo.

Sure Dyche fits the above bill. But i'd rather see Unsworth in the short term, with a view to doing well and getting it long term. But I also want to see Silva or Tuchel. Anyone who can convince they can coach the side. There's players there. The answer is not to sell 15 and buy another 6. Let's work with what we have, get a striker in, get Funes fit, get Barkley fit and see what the new guy can make happen.

Not sure why some are calling out Vlasic. To me he's been one of the brighter new recruits with Pickford. Not much pace but tidy and good feet, reminds me of Leon Osman a bit.

Going for Moyes wouldn't end well. We need to learn from the Kendall 2nd and 3rd spells that it doesn't work second time around.

Maybe its too early for Unsworth. I'd not like to see him go the way of Shakespeare as that would be the end of him at the club.

Someone who can organise a team. Even if that means Allerdyce, not attractive but would stop the rot that has spread.

Andrew #277,

Pochettino has worked wonders at Spurs since, and there's never a mention for Tim Sherwood. But I think if you want to draw a parallel with Spurs there is yet another one to be made.

The other parallels are the Bale / Lukaku sale. The splurge on players who the manager (ABV) could not get to gel. Then in came the youth coach (Sherwood) he didn't do much, but what he did do was bring through a load of kids and get them experienced, then Pochettino came in and was able to get hold of Spurs with Kane and co already in the first team.

So in my eyes, Sherwood did play a (Small) role in Spurs resurgence. So, maybe Unsworth will not work out, but perhaps he can transition the club for the next manager by getting those group of highly talented kids into the first team and giving them something to build on.

I would say Unsworth has achieved more than Sherwood did at U23s, that we have more quality in terms of numbers, but perhaps not a Harry Kane quality player. Who knows how good Calvert-Lewin will be. He's got everything bar the finishing, and we're all just praying that the finishing and goals suddenly comes (like it suddenly did for Kane) and then he doesn't stop.

Ray Robinson
292 Posted 23/10/2017 at 16:03:02
I have my reservations about Unsworth - lack of top flight experience, maybe unable to attract big name players (arguable), genuinely a nice guy when perhaps we need someone ruthless etc - but would not be unhappy with him as an interim manager. However, if he were to be appointed on a permanent basis immediately and things did not pick up, then we would be in danger of losing an exceptional youth team coach. He might face the sack for no fault of his own and we, the club, would be all the poorer for it too. A tricky one this!

296 Posted 23/10/2017 at 16:08:28
I cannot see how the club would give it to Unsworth on a full time basis. IF they did want to do so, it would still be on an interim basis. Meantime the board start tapping up people like Silva and see what he wants to do. Maybe Silva says he would love to come, but it has to be in July. Meantime, we pull into mid-table and then chug along there until the end of the season and Silva can come in and take over.

Or we do shit and results stay the same, in which case we get out the bat-phone and call up Big Sam.

Or results pick up dramatically and we give him until the end of the season and then give it him full-time in the summer.

It will be interesting to see what effect this has on the players, if we see them suddenly transposed, it is obvious they were being held back by tactics, or in many cases, playing out of position.

I have always maintained we have a decent squad, although it could be argued we have got too many similar position players. The correct blend will see confidence restored, and hopefully the results will too.

Koeman's Blueprint for success, has turned out to be a Brownprint for failure.

Does anyone know whether Steve Walsh has escaped the sack, and I assume all Koeman's gang will have departed too?

Murphy: "...no matter who we get in the club has issues that a manger change wont fix." I'm more hopeful than that. First of all, the new manager that comes in, even if it's Unsworth, the person will have had a perspective from outside the squad and be able to analyse what's been going on with the different combinations with the current squad, and second of all, he will have his own style of play and his own way to motivate the players. I think, unfortunately for Koeman, it's a win for the club.

Relief that the board have acted quicker than in recent years. He had to go - and while I know of no one who likes to see anyone relieved of their duties - the future of our club was at risk.

Of course, it's only the start of hopefully a recovery and getting the right person/team in over the next few weeks is crucial. Let Unsworth run with it for the time being. These are good players if motivated and given direction under a tactically aware manager, and win, lose or draw over the next few week - it couldn't have got any worse.

A top drawer replacement will be needed - and hopefully not just the usual suspects either. No going back to Moyes, please - his race is run and hopefully he'll give Scotland a go. Rafa would actually do a reasonable job - but the 'small club" comment still sticks in my throat. Can we aim higher than a 'keep 'em up' expert like Alladyce, please.

Is this a chance to get Barkley back on side? Hopefully. Here's hoping our season starts to kick-start now.

Who are the really good players Mark? I don't see it myself. Someone on here was saying we need Funes Mori back. That's how desperately bad we are at present. He's got a mistake in him, every game but he's better than Williams admittedly. Keane looks woeful to me. I can't be arsed to list all our problems at the moment.

What concerns me about Dyche is that he's a good manager at this moment in time but the PL history is littered with managers who had one or two good seasons. Burley, Curbishley etc.

The consensus on Sunday was 'I'd have anyone' to replace the Dutch master. That didn't last did it? The competition now is who can have the longest list of 'no's'.

'Pep Guardiola - no way, even dropped points to us, the twat'.

I don't know who the new appointment will be, though I'd be astonished if it's Moyes and srurpirised if it's Unsworth or Allardyce. The strategic choice is whether to apoint short term survival (Dyche possibly best bet), or longer term prospects. Either way they've got a fight on thier hands until the window opens.

Thomas Tuchel, hope the spelling is correct, is the best available option. If we don't get him then I would be happy for Unsworth to be given the position til the end of the season. Hopefully, he would do such a good job in that period that he would then be an automatic choice.

Like most on here I can only guess who will be appointed as the new manager, but Christine Foster set the alarm bells ringing for me, followed by a couple of other posters mentioning Moyes, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he was brought back, and he is the last man in the world I would ask.

Just as every cloud has a silver lining and it was great news, for me, hearing Koeman has been given his comics, I feel also that every silver lining has a cloud, and Moyes would be a fuckin' pitch black one.

Brian, 190 - agree with that, it's sensible to give yourself two bites of the cherry. If Unsworth doesn't improve things he's earned the right to go back to the Under 23s and we can get someone in.

For those who think this isn't a relegation fight, we have 8 points from 9 games, 5 of them at home - 'relegation fight' is exactly what it is, and our form would have to be spectacular to change that situation before Christmas. We're down there with Stoke and Bournemouth, both of whom were gutted not to get an arguably deserved victory at Goodison. Some turn around required, but I think we all believe we've got the players to do it - McCarthy and Barkley being two of them.

Regarding OFFFM...To the media, and since we're still having BK at the helm, we're dependent on him. The media still plays OFFFM as our last "savior". To me, it would mean Moshiri doesn't know what he wants and I highly doubt that. Of cos, BK can always prove me wrong (about Moshiri).

Let's at least get behind Unsworth for now and hope he turns it around immediately. I want Tuchel but I'm pretty sure there is a huge rift between expectations on both sides.

Whoever we get there's no guarantee of anything. But please can we get someone who coaches width in the team and plays wingers and who knows how to play without 2 defensive midfielders. I know Unsworth will play a team we all like the shape of and would be happy to see him given a chance. I never like us poaching managers from other Premier League teams for some reason either.
Roll on Chelsea away and the chance to recover some pride by having a team that seems happy in their own skin and comfortable in their roles and team shape.

There's a load of good players there:

Pickford, Kenny, Holgate, Keane, Funes, Baines, Davies, Schneiderlin (last season's model!), Gueye, McCarthy, Bolasie, Lennon, Sigurdsson, Klaassen (Ajax version), Barkley, Lookman, Vlasic, Rooney, Calvert-Lewin, Onyekuru.

Is there really not an eleven from that lot, or even Dowell, Garbutt, Galloway, Connolly, Beni Bang'emin, Anthony Gordon, Gibson, Pennington, Bowler etc who can be promoted from the youth ranks (or recalled from loan).

Some top manager is going to find that a bit of hard work could pay off big time and catapult him to the promised land. Surely someone like Silva will be licking his lips thinking he has a real chance with a group of players like that. Sure we can use a striker, a pacy winger, a centre-half, but the guy will be told there will be money to spend. This is a more than a "keep them up" job, and it's still only October. We could win on Wednesday, we could win a few in a row in the league and get up to 7th in no time, we could win and qualify in the Europa League. Anything is possible. We just need a leader we can get behind. Let's be positive blues.

Good riddance

Please don’t ruin a belatedly good story by going anywhere near Allerdyce. He was a thug as a player, a crook as a manager and his teams mirror him.

We may have been in a relegation fight if RK had stayed but I do not believe we are now. 29 games left and though we have been woeful we are only 5 points behind the shite! Beat Leicester and Watford and all talk of relegation is gone.

Nobody has experience until they get it and everyone has a first appointment. Surely now is the time to see if unsy is up to it. If he isn’t then we still have over half a season to sort it out. How many tomes have we called on young players to be given a chance, let’s give unsy the next 6-10 games guaranteed and then see where we sit.

The two holding midfielders do not need to be so deep though Ben. Look at Mourinho's united, especially when Pogba is one of them. That's the same formation we have played mostly this season. It's just Koeman played it far too narrow. Hopefully we can get as much width and pace into the team as possible.

Well said!

And there's been a lot of "but WHO could we get in to do better..." comments. And the simple answer for the short term, at least, is: "Just about anyone with both some basic knowledge of football, as well as a flexible mind"!

Koeman insisted on using the same failed formation, match after match, but with ever-varying player selections. Maybe his formation might have worked out in the end, but no players had any chance to get to know each other well enough for that.

Half a job.

I've been critical of Koeman from a few months into his reign, but as that wound has now been cauterised it seems redundant carping on about it. However, in my opinion, the rapid descent into calamity shouldn't be laid solely at his dreary, unwelcoming door.

Steve Walsh should, at the very least, be finding his own position under severe scrutiny right now. He blagged himself a cushy Director of Football role on the back of a hit and miss scouting career buffed up on ridiculous hype from a few of his more recent finds enjoying a season of barnstorming form. How the fuck does a PE teacher past, schlepping shite around Newcastle and Hull, followed by a large slice of fairytalesque luck and a liking for stats, make him a suitable fit for the pivotal task of shaping the future on-field direction of a footballing institution?

In May, when asked if he had full control over which players they would look to sign for the first team, Koeman said he did not but that he had 'input' ("Full control, no, I cannot control all the players I want. We speak about the players who will make the team stronger. Last week I said we need more players and more scoring players than we have right now"). A few weeks later Walsh is saying he doesn't have the final say on signings and has to get the nod off Koeman before a new player can be brought in. He just has 'input'.

Conflicting messages from the top and people wonder why an expensively assembled squad ended up a confused mess.

A large part of the problem with the whole Director Of Football/Head Coach dynamic is that there too often fails to be a clear demarcation between the two roles when it comes to the construction of a first-team dynamic.

We seem to have ended up with a hodge podge of wickedly overpriced, humdrum, 'talent', some of whom we're led to believe were brought in after being bigged up by Walsh (Gueye, Lookman, Bolasie) and others who were clearly corralled on the basis of familiarity to Koeman (Stekelenburg, Schneiderlin, Martina, Klaassen), with little thought given to whether the loose parts would all gel together.

Can contrasting ideas and/or compromise really be conducive to the formation of a coherent team?

It's the same with the slavish adherence to statistical data serving as a sign post to which players the club should spunk their wedge on. It's all well and good saying, "Wow, this guy made the 3rd most interceptions in the entire league... during the period Oct to Feb", or " This guy ran like fuck with a really red face much further than anyone else in his position managed to run with comparable crimson cheeks", and then thinking that's enough reason to recruit them all. How about giving equal consideration to whether they could possibly compliment each other and the players already at the club?

The signing of Vlasic doesn't exactly cover Walsh and his gang in glory either. Here we have a supposed 'super scout' with talent spotting networks set up all over the globe and a database the length of Dirk Diggler's dong, yet after a full year in the job the best he can come up with as the clock ticks down on the transfer window is to take a punt on some kid who put on a semi-decent show against us over two legs a couple of weeks back? What if Vlasic hadn't played in either of those Europa qualifiers? Would he be lining up for Everton right now? Would he fuck.

Nice dose of reality James 281. We are not a big club, we are a medium club, albeit with a proud history and a big fanbase. We also have one of the worst squads in the division, full of players who are too old, slow, not very good, or a combination of these, and a crop of youngsters who are promising but not ready for regular EPL football. A "top" manager would never come here.

I am sure the team will play better for Unsy and as for a permanent manager, none of the names mentioned do it for me so I hope it is someone I have never heard of then I can think - this should be interesting.

Give Unsworth a go? No thanks. What happens if he does well for a few months? We then end up giving him the job as full time Everton manager? Would we really want a manager with 10 games experience in the premier league managing us long term? That's not going to work, there's no way he'll be able to attract the top class players to come to us. Ultimately any short term success Unsworth has will create an issue in the longer term for us.

Put him in as caretaker but immediately start searching for a new manager because Unsworth isn't the answer.

Of course if Unsworth isn't a short term success we really will then be fooked, so appointing Unsworth on anything other than a very short term caretaker is a recipe for failure as well as a huge gamble. In the position we are in we need an experienced manager. Benitez for me.

Fans wanting Moyes back are deluded.
I can't believe some want him back, he should be bottom of the list. Just above him on the no list should be Martinez and Allardyce.
Koeman is an arrogant bully. Barcelona indeed, FFS !!
We need to hope that the board do a better job this time round. I was happy with Koemans appointment but even happier with his departure. I hope seeing Niasse scoring that last goal for us is preying on his mind heavily. He lambasted Oumar publicly and said he'd never play for us. What a choker this must have been and I for one am glad. Those saying it's never nice to see someone lose their job well I'd take issue with that. I'm chuffed to bit's he's been sacked. He fully deserved it and months ago by the way.
I just hope that Ross keeps his counsel and simply says " I'd like to sign a contract now please". That would send a message to the arrogant, ignorant, no-mark. Sorry Ronald but "okay this is justice and this Everton" I hope you never darken our door again.

John Daley, are you sure that isn't just Koeman doing what Koeman does and trying to blame everyone but himself. He made it clear that from this next window, he would leave it up to Walsh as he was too busy trying to fix things on the pitch. Now if he had to now leave it up to Walsh, then that would show that he still played a major role, otherwise he wouldn't need to leave it up to Walsh.

As for Walsh's long list of finds, don't forget Drogba and his list of players he got for Chelsea.

I simply do not know how good Walsh is, or just how much he is to blame for the current mess. The proof is in the eating, and let's see what happens in the next two windows.

Edit: john - you do know Bolasie was signed by Lukaku don't you, at his request, as part of a deal to give it one more year!

I don't believe the players were playing for Koeman their demeanour showed this , I CANT believe they are that bad ? Koeman failed on many levels but mostly on man management. Todays modern players need to be "loved" having never worked a proper job or struggled to pay a bill its hard to get them to give a shit as is ,tough love doesnt do it anymore I feel

I don't think we should knee jerk , we should not fear Leicester are going to get our man. Time for cool heads , Give the Rhino a chance and lets see how things unfold maybe the stars are aligning

Will we be able to attract a good manager with that position existing at the club? Can Walsh work with a manager set on controlling which players get bought for the first team?

I think the fact that "the board" have made what some would say is a decisive move by sacking Koeman, 10 games into the season, would also preclude them from considering Moyes for the job.
i.e: if they're sensible enough to get rid of Koeman they're hardly gonna be fucking stupid enough to re-employ Moyes.

Steve Ferns

Lev, Koeman insisted on a Director of Football. It was part of his management style of going home at 4.00pm everyday. It wasn't fostered on him, he insisted.

I do agree that it was time to move into the 21st Century and the system of Moyes negotiating the terms was too 1970s.

As to the role itself, there's different types. There's the American "General Manager" type role whereby this guy does everything the manager typically does but pick the side and coach the team.

Then there is the scout type, who merely gives a list to the manager who confirms who he wants and then a team of negotiators (see agents) then thrash out the terms. The Manager remains in control.

There are other types as well but it starts to get a bit technical with "back-office" stuff. I believe we used the latter rather than the former, and there was no doubt that Koeman was in charge and had the final say.

Hugh Jenkins
343 Posted 23/10/2017 at 16:58:13
Andy (339). Your argument is flawed. If we appoint Unswoth, full time, it won't be for 10 games, it will be for the remaining 29 games in the EPL, this season,

If he does well, there is no reason why top players won't come to us.

If they truly believe they are coming to an ambitious club, who are in, or near the CL positions, and who are willing to pay them well, they will come. It has nothing to do with the manager.
In this day and age, if you hadn't noticed, it's all to do with success and ££££.

Offer success and the right amount of ££££ and it wouldn't matter if Mickey Mouse was the manager and Popeye owned the club - "if you build it - they will come".

It feels like emerging from the dark into the light, rubbing my eyes in bewilderment, confused which way to turn but happy that I can look forward.

I was just plain miserable watching Everton under Koeman. Despite my protestations he got another season because even though the football was doleful the results were not.

With that removed, laid bare was a fella who without a goal machine, which would embellish any managers cause, he was without any worthwhile ideas.

Unsworth has no down side short term. A placeholder of unknown value. He might take the opportunity with both hands, if not then we appoint from outside.

Just feels so much better right? Finally I feel excited about my blue boys once again.

So Koeman had his say for the first team, even for picking what targets Walsh should go for? That sounds reasonable, from a manger's point of view.

I wonder if it works the same for the Uxx squads?

Anyway, if Koeman was really calling the serious shots for who to bring in, then I have no problem with Walsh (except for his success rate...). And we've brought in a lot of good young players for the Uxx's that has had their parent clubs howling in pain...

Rather than randomly pulling names out of hats, we need to assess the situation first:

• The team is in a mess / unbalanced / no recognised striker.
• Confidence is shot to pieces.
• No clearly defined system of play.

To me, this suggests our greatest need is an organiser.

I’m not advocating bringing DM back – but that was the type of job he did when he stabilised the club 15 years ago. We need someone of similar ilk.

I doubt any elite level manager would come here right now given the current state of the team / squad.

And simply flashing the cash only attracts mercenaries like RK.

Nobody immediately springs to mind but an interim appointment may be needed to steady the ship.

(Dyche is the favourite on Paddy Power).

On a positive note, I’m encouraged that Moshiri had acted so decisively.

With the big money clubs having all the top players the only realistic way forward to success is a manager who knows tactics. Someone who can out think the big boys but play decent attacking football too.
Not sure there are many Brits who fall into this catagory but there are a few abroad. Simeone at Athletico has done it for years now and its someone like this we need.

I'm not sure his man management is good enough it seems the players don't want to work for him, the way he treated Niasse before he had even seen him kick a ball was ruthless, I know we all seen how badly he was at first but he keeps popping up lately and scoring so must have something.

Also the way he has destroyed Barkley in public is out of order should always do that behind closed doors.

Anyway Koeman is gone time to look forward. Not sure who is available out there. I'd give Unsworth the job until Christmas at least and see how he does, I love rhino and he doing wonders with the under 23's if anyone deserves a chance it's him.

There is no real "right" answer that's clear now about who we should have as the new manager.

What I hope we don't do is go for the predictable, mediocre appointment. Choosing a "safe pair of hands" and a manager who has demonstrated over time that they'll do OK but never take a team to the next level. That's your Moyes, Allardyce, etc.

The natural response of the board might be for the "safe" option. I believe that the only way that we'll truly move forward is if we take the risky option. Either by pushing hard for a manager who might be considered outside of our reach (Ancelotti, even Tuchel). Or by going for an internal hire like Unsworth.

My personal option would be Ancelotti with Unsworth as a #2, with a view to taking over in three years. That's not taking into account how realistic it would be; but we should be looking beyond just what's the easy choice.

If Moshiri is choosing the nex manager, then I don't think Unsworth will be in with a shout. He specifically stated he wanted a 'big name' to lift the profile of the club.

We need someone who make us enjoyable to watch again. Martinez was decent in patches, but that lasted only a few months. Koeman was dull for the whole of his tenure, there is nothing worse than watching defensive football and STILL losing games.

I don't know if there is anyone who can turn this around without a striker though, someone else needs sacking for that particular dereliction of duty.

Koeman will be the next Dutch manager, Moyes the next Scots manager. Following on from Bobby brown shoes who got the Belgium gig.

Anchelotti would be my shout, but not sure if he can turn this steaming pile of horse shit into a side that can stay up. So many issues in this team - left back, right back, left centre back, centre mid, left winger, strikersssssss .

The only way I see Unsworth being our manager is IF we hire Ancelotti to guide him. Only other name I can think of in that category is Ranieri but even I don't see him improving our current state. We need a manager that can the players can look up to and is tactically flexible to work with our mix of players considering we do not have a "big name" striker.

Tuchel for me all day but I'm sure Moshiri has a much bigger list than mine when he made the decision to let rk go.

Rhino as a care-take manager does not frighten me at all. He's a man-manager who seems to do very well with our U23's, and he'll be good for our morale and team-spirit!

But I really don't want him to get the taint of our current plight stuck on him! I really hope he'll turn out to be our manager in the future, but he's currently only preparing for that leap! Don't ruin his future, as he will NOT be able to say no to Everton at any time; even (especially) at as bad a time as this is, and as unprepared as he currently is!

The basic problem we are now faced with is that despite huge expenditure in the summer we are now miles further away from the
promised land of the top four than we were last May. A top name would cetainly want assurances that he would be given serious
money to rectify the glaring ommissions and unbalance of the present squad.
However the appointment of someone of the ilk of Dysche or Silva(and I would not object to either) would indicate that the horizons have been well lowered with insufficient funds for the time being to get us straight back on the road to the summit.

The more you look at the present situation and the make up of the squad you realise how much long term damage Koeman and Walsh have caused.

Nicholas, I’d prefer an A-list manager who would prepare a younger Evertonian to eventually take over. That’s why I’ve endorsed Ancellotti with someone like Unsy as his asst.

Now why the fuck are sky asking for Carra’s opinion? Do our former players opine about their managerial prospects (what is it, 7 in 10 years?) every time they sack someone?

If Jim White is such a big mate of Moshiri then he should show some more respect.

Signed I think (but who knows who did) 2 or 3 very ordinary players for big money but waltzes out the door with a large fortune!

Chosing the next manager is very tricky because I can pick holes in every one of the leading candidates.

Monday is usually an alcohol free day for me. Just enjoyed a good South African merlot!

Ancelotti and Unsworth = Dream Team.

Last night I was thinking that Koeman could use this week for more training, as he always complained about not having enough time. Meanwhile he could have let Unsworth take the Chelski game, as they are expected to play a young team. So Unsworth could take young first team players and augment them with a few U23s, whilst having other U23s on the bench. I was going to post that thought on the Chelski thread, but Koeman's sacking has encouraged me to write it sooner.

The Independent claims we're looking at Dyche and Ancelotti, though I've read recently that Ancelotti wants to take the season off so that's unlikely. Dyche would be a retrograde step in my view.

They also say this, "Former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel may also be looked at, having left the German club in the summer, while David Moyes' name has been similarly mentioned, but the Independent has been told he is not currently considered a desired candidate."

There really is just one way forward .an Evertonian manager is needed for Everton. David Unsworth is the man and with either Joe or Peter Reid, perhaps both, as his mentor(s). We would never be able to complain about motivation or commitment or question their abilities to understand the game.
So come on Bill I was there with you in the Boys pen all those years ago,,,, and give David the chance to put it right.

The move had to be made, but I take no joy in it, just as I took no joy in Martinez being sacked. It's simply the final, depressing stamp on a lot of ambition and expectation going completely south, for whatever reason.

And I'm definitely going to be tempering my excitement until I see who the actual replacement is. For what it's worth, I agree 100% with Steve Ferns - we need someone who'll be hands-on with the squad and get stuck-in on the training pitch. Not Ancelotti or Pelligrini, who'd basically fill out the lineup card, then fold his arms and go to sleep on the bench.

I do wonder if this paves the way for Barkley staying. I'm all for it, though I do suspect the love affair would last until, oh, about halftime of his first match and then he'd start getting slated on here again.

Moshiri gets some credit for terminating the manager's tenure, still was overdue in my mind but that raises the issue of who's in charge?

I'd like to believe if Moshiri was in sole charge the axe might have swung earlier, with Bill's influence and proud Everton values of giving a manager time, maybe thats why it took longer.

I don't buy that Moshiri would hold off just prove he was right as it was his pick. Successful people are ruthless not stupid.

Ironic that would be sacked in an act of pragmatism.

Then for some pragmatism and reality in whom is brought in as FT manager.

Surely now the lowest point since Walter Smith and Mike Walkers stint has been passed, and the squad can start with a clean slate.

Need to replace Lukaku

No formation

No pace

Why only now can they see it ?! My choice would be Rhino until Xmas and look to appoint from there! I’m sure by picking a balanced team we have enough to be up to about 10th by Christmas then pick the right man from there!

Have you seen our position ? Are you watching the players, their attitudes, confidence levels, focus, playing standards are zero.
This is not going to be an easy or quick fix.

I couldn’t read/face all the posts. However I read enough to see that by post number 250 only TWO posts raised the issue of the culpability of the players. It is clear that we have a real problem with a fair number of players. For the avoidance of doubt I include that mercenary Barkley. I hope he leaves. However, the deluded romantics on here will welcome him back.
According to many we need to await a manager who instils the confidence required to execute the absolute basics of football. Can we now expect Williams and Jagielka to pass properly, Baines to run, Keane to do something/anything, Rooney to get fit, Mirallas to play with his head up, Sandro to shoot on target? Gueye was simply stupid to attempt that tackle. The list is too long to cope with.
Too many on here seem far to keen to point at RK solely.
As for those pushing for “Big Sam” that is simply laughable. In a masochistic way that haunts Everton I hope we do get him so you can witness just how stupid you are and then you will retire from this site of at least have all your future comments colour coded so they can be easily isolated.

I see Sky are trying to hype up the notion of Ryan Giggs being in the running. Idiots! We don't want anyone using us as a stepping stone for another job. As regards who will get the job, it's a tricky one. Talk of Moyes is simply absurd. Is Big Sam an Everton man? I don't think so. The 'foreign' option has backfired twice already. My biggest criticism of Koeman was that he just didn't seem to be an Everton man. His passion could never match our own for the club. Would Ancelotti or Tuchel care about us enough? I don't envy the board's task this time. This one has to be the right man. Not easy. Over to you Bill and Mosh.

Keane just said the players really were to blame, not RK.

I read that, but I also wondered how any of the players could be so deluded as to only blame themselves! We have seen the players really try, but there was no sensible formation for them to act within! No pace in the midfield, no truly wide players for the fullbacks to utilize on a regular basis, no towering striker (as RK's tactics seemed to presume would be there...)!

A lack of sensible tactics utilizing the available players in their 'good' positions, combined with a failure to empathize with the Evertonian fan-base, is what brought RK down in the end

Angry meeting took place post-match yesterday, Mosh, BK, RK and Walsh. Recriminations all round.

Decision followed.

Koeman never flavour of the month with BK. He was MoshIri's man. Gives the lie to conspiracy theorists about BK's role at the club. He has some influence but not the power behind the throne. Figurehead in Moshiri's absence in Monaco. Moshiri pulled the trigger.

When RK appointed he wanted all first team staff gone. BK stuck out for DF. DF not Mr Popular at the club.

If FM is a genuine businessman he will have had discussions about/with replacements. Given three games in eight days wouldn't expect an appointment announced until after/ immediately prior to Watford at the earliest. Two-week gap to next game due to international break.

Dortmund top of BL. Why would Tuchel move? Ancelloti and Mancini are not renowned coaches and we badly need one to organise our back seven for starters.

Not fair to ask that of Unsworth. U23s great to watch but not sure about defensive solidity. Maybe as coach alongside ANO with a feel for defensive organisation.

Big Sam spoke well about the challenge on MNF a couple of weeks ago. Liked his approach last season when, after difficult early results, he said that if the players bought into what he asked for it would turn around.

Imperative to get the next appointment right, right in the sense the man can atleast last or see out three years. As part of the boards homework on the next candidate, I would hope they confide in the players as to the characteristics of manager needed, which were lacking in both Martinez and Koeman. These players have got to want to play for a manager and buy into his methods therefore to an extent players must give an input into what was lacking so that the board can appoint a manager which the players will play for an respect there philosophies and qualities they bring.

Thats the easy bit now the difficult part of appointing the next manager. Anyone who thinks a new manager is going to turn this around quickly is sadly mistaken. Whoever comes in is taking over a team with no confidence, and probably the least number of strikers to pick from in the whole Premiership. He will have to wait till November at the earliest to get Seamus and Yannick back.

We have a team that struggles to score more than 1 goal irrespective of the opposition and concedes goals for fun. I don't know about which manager we might get in as Houdini might not save us from relegation.

So I hope the fans will have reasonable expectations of what the new man can achieve before the next window opens in Jan. I know some will say we finished 7th last year, but the players playing in the side now are not the ones playing last year.

Thomas Tuchel seems to have had the exact same problems at Dortmund that Koeman had with Everton, no rapport with the players or fans, so that could be a dangerous option.
Ancelloti would bring a reputation and experience to the table, along with a CV which includes sackings ! !
Dyche is a well respected young manager who is gaining a reputation for well organised play, the players play for him, he is also hungry but of course this is another step up, but ALL successful managers have to take that step
What I do know is that whoever takes the reins is going to have a tremendously hard job, maybe the hardest in years..
There are players that need to be shipped out who have hardly broke sweat yet for the club, because we simply have too many players for too few positions, . The squad is totally unbalanced but there is some great young talent there.
Rooney has to go, he simply messes up the balance of the team and displaces Siggurdson in that no10, only Rooney as an out and out striker is an option but then you do not have a target man.
Klasson is an enigma, talented but light weight, he may yet end up back in Holland but deserves a fair shake as I would love him to work out.
Keane ? well he looks so slow, a liner turns quicker, totally shown up against the Arsenal but hopefully someone can iron out these faults but he seems poor value despite his young age and possible improvement with time.
Yes there may well be a severe cull with Everton taking a loss on some of the more recent purhases
We need someone who can organise the defence to stop leaking goals, then play to a system that the current players know inside out.We also need someone who is respected by the players but is also not too close that he cant rollick them and gain a response.
Fascinating to see how this all rolls out.

It's Ancelloti or Rainieri. The rest of the assemblance being touted in previous correspondences don't hold a candle to them.

Dyche, gee he sounds like another Dutchman. A manager who would need to wear a space suit to work if he came to breathe the rarified air of a club like Everton.

Its time for our esteemed leaders to stick their fingers in the porous dyke and stop our magnificent, historical and ground breaking club from slipping into the sea. New stadium, uncle Tom Cobley and all.

The board did the right thing and dropped the curtain on this chancer. I didn't see that coming, I thought they'd drag it out. Glad to be wrong on that.

Kunai (462) - well, if there wa proof needed of how Koeman has been castigated as the sole cause of our problems. Let the players decide who they want to play for?? This game, our club, is so much the poorer for the obscene increase in player power. Lunatics really are taking over the asylum. Let me make it clear - Koeman had to go - but the players should have their heads in shame for their lack of professionalism. I speak as someone who goes home and away.

Colin # 180, I have been doing some homework on Paulo Fonseca. He did very well at a couple of Portuguese clubs, even taking a small one into the Champions' League play-offs, but he failed at his home country's most successful club of the past thirty-odd years, Porto, although friends in Portugal tell me he had one of their poorest squads in years. But he has done very well at Shakhtar, playing away from their home city, on account of the troubles in Ukraine. Apparently, he usually prefers a 4-4-2 formation, and he gets teams well organised and playing with flair.

Like I said, Pep Guardiola seems to be a fan of his, and if anyone likes to build football-playing sides, as opposed to backs-to-the-wall-they-shall-not-pass outfits, that man is Guardiola.

Overall, I wouldn't be disappointed if Fonseca was appointed, but I'd still prefer someone with a more proven record, especially in the Premier League. His compatriot Silva obviously springs to mind, in spite of his short time over here, but surely he's not leaving Watford at this stage.

Things are unlikely to change overnight, so all those putting up the bunting now Koeman has gone, are quite likely to be in for a bit of a comedown.

This team of misfits needs a lot more than a new manager.

Everton need someone who can take us to the next level and the right man needs to get what we are all about. He needs to win over the fans quickly.

There are very few who can satisfy the above and it will take time to find him. Marco Silva may the one but it is very early days for him at Watford. Also, Watford are conceding a few. Don't forget how well Bobby did with us at first. I think we need to wait until at least the end of the season before considering Silva.

Lots of names have been mentioned, I am not really convinced about any of them. Each (other than Ginger) seem to have their pluses. It may be that we do indeed need to appoint a short term manager to steady the ship and help us prepare for the step up that so desperately want and need.

To me it makes sense to have Rhino takeover for the short term only with reassurances given about his future. David gets Everton because he is a fan and he would be warmly welcomed by the supporters. It would be great experience for him and I really can't seem him making matters worse. It would be good to provide support in the shape of Joe Royle assuming Joe wants it. I Aldo think I would trust that pairing more with the Jan transfer kitty than anyone else at the moment.

Then, hopefully we will be in better shape to attract a top class manager that will take us up to the next level.

Rotten Ronny finally gets the McBoot. Not until after he's "built" one of the narrowest, softest, slowest and cohesionless squads I can remember in Everton history. Whoever comes in has a hell of a job, with two thirds of the squad being Ronnys Boys, and the other third Moyes remnants and the odd Martinez survivor too. (What does McCarthy do all day, have jacuzis?)
That two thirds of squad by the way cost us an insane amount of money.
Having selected the wrong man last time to rebuild the squad, and allowing him to make it worse at enormous expense, I have little faith in the board getting the right man this time.
It's a complete mess. Worst, it was obvious to myself and others that Rotten Ronny was the wrong man from day one. What a waste of time and effort these shitehawks running our club are. And what a sad bunch we are for having to watch them.

Thanks Ron. You and your team have sold THE most prolific goalscorer in living memory (in a blue shirt) THE most hyped central defender in the EPL. Alienated a lifelong blue many felt we should build the team around.

In their place you have bought two central defenders with the worst record in twelve competitive games I can remember. A lazy and already failed midfielder (at Spurs) a useless centre forward in Sandro Ramirez and Morgan Shniederlin!!!!!

I don't think you can have any complaints about getting the push.

The key things for me are;
1. what sort of footy does the owner want to see? Expressive, attacking stuff (Guardiola school of coach) or safe, tight and grinding out results
( Simeone school)?
2. does he want a manager/coach of the type who will make the best of the players or a manager/coach that has a fixed style who will be looking at spending big sums in January

Identifying those things should whittle the shortlist down.
My preference would be for the club to identify a house style - e.g pressing, playing with width and fast counters and a mobile CF-that will allow the Director of footy to buy that sort of player for the future and then find a manager who produces that sort of footy.

Pelligrini for me with Unsworth as asst manager

He had to go as it was obvious he just didn't have a clue what to do. But unfortunately the next manager will also have exactly the same problem - we can't score. Sure we can try to shore up the defence, play 5-6 defenders, defensive midfielders , but we have no one to score goals. Even bloody Pep would struggle to get goals from this team.

Ok, (as Ronald used to say) , we will get a striker in January, but he'll need 2-3 months to fire. We've lost this season completely, perhaps best about 10th. Then the same issue about attracting quality players, with no European football, no chance of even getting close to Top 6 for a season or so. No chance of attracting a real top manager, who will want CL football we can't give him.

Losing Lukaku will cost this club about 2-3 years hardship at least, players like him are gold dust and we've lost our main chance of getting into any Top 4-6 places.

Question is how long will Moshiri give it, Bramley Dock, watch it go on the back-burner.

My understanding which is in the public domain, is that the club offered him an extremely lucrative contract and wanted him to stay. They gave him a whole season to agree and sign. They were transparent and said that he was to sign before the season closed. With advice from his agent he declined that offer and wants to play elsewhere. That's him gone in my mind. Even if the reasons you state wee substantiated, allowing players to dictate who manages EFC is the thin end of the wedge. If a player wants to go for the reasons you say then that's his entitlement. So, how do the board ensure that the next manager can deliver the (unrealistic?) expectations of the fans. Koeman was low risk and failed, everybody quoted so far is high risk apart from Unsy on a temporary basis until the end of the year. That has to be the selected option with the hope that he slowly but surely turns it around. It is a massive call for such an inexperienced coach who we would have no hesitation to put down if he gives a hint of failing.
Stephen Williams

Just a few nuggetts from above:

"We need someone to take us to the next level" - do you mean 4th from bottom and out of the relegation spots?

"we have some really good players" - erm no we don't - we have one or two (Pickford, Coleman and ), the rest are very average and the table shows that.

"he didn't have a clue but the next manager will have the same problems" - bang on. This group just isn't good enough and we can't do anything about it until at least January, but more likely the summer as why would teams let their best players go in the middle if the season?

Although Koeman is culpable, in no way should he be viewed as alone in this. There are lots of fingerprints on this - coaching staff, all the players, the board (they signed the cheques), even us fans (the atmosphere has been awful both home and away for ages). Essentially I take no pleasure in the dismissal of a manager because it simply means that collectively we've failed.

Bottom line is that there'll be no quick fix so let's not get ahead of ourselves and instead steel ourselves for a long, hard slog.

I’m in the Unsworth camp. Think about it - we have Holgate, Kenny, Davies, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Dowell (who’s impressing for Forest) all who have worked with Unsworth and will probably run through brick walls for him.

They’re our future so get a manager in who they trust and respect and who has already instilled a winning mentality into them all.

7th, 6th,7th with Southampton and the Everton he inherited from Martinez isn't bad going. He had to go but it's criminal that he wasn't given the tools to complete the job. He asked for a striker and defender again and again. Whoever was responsible needs to go too and I don't mean Walsh.

Bill Gienapp are they really? They can't have seen much of Everton this season then!

Regarding next manager and the immediate future - I do agree that it might not be a quick fix getting performances and results out of a team bereft of confidence and depth in certain positions. But we have treated one of the core issues in RK so hopefully we can reverse the damage, given time.

I'm not clamouring for Allardyce necessarily (though bottom 3 still by January and I will!), but I do believe he is a better football manager than some of you guys give him credit for. His record at getting under-performing teams organised and hard to beat can't be questioned. And I think at Newcastle and West Ham he probably couldn't get them where he wanted because right from the get-go a significant number of fans were against him and his style. Just my opinion.

For the other candidates I also feel Moyes would be a big step backward. I'm not sure about Mancini - his Man City weren't always that great even though he had massive resources. And Pellegrini to a lesser extent. We've usually had decent results against Man City haven't we? Dyche could be decent, never know until he makes the step up in terms of a club with higher expectations.

Unsy (with Joe Royle maybe?) to Xmas and see how we go. Rest of the season if results are improved. Unsy can always move back to U23 coach if we then go for someone permanent, don't let him be a Craig Shakespeare!

And make sure the next permanent boss has performance-related clauses in the contract. Like poor form/results over a defined period means a vastly reduced compensation payout!! We've been burned by Bobby & Ron so if it's possible to implement it, we should.

So here we go again, looking for a new manager!

I voiced my opinion after Moyes and Martinez. My personal choice/favourite was not selected but at the time I was happy with who the board appointed. After all, the decision lies with them and all we can do as fans is speculate and debate our personal choices. The board knows who and what they are looking for and what direction they want to take the club so let's just hope they make a wise decision.

But I just want to suggest a name which possibly has not been mentioned and this is a bit tongue in cheek and I would be interested to see what reaction fellow Evertonians think as this person certainly has his lovers and haters amongst us Evertonians. It is not Rafa but a current playing Blue Boy!

I suspect the board shall look for a big name ( as much as I would like to see Rhino get the job, I feel he shall just have a caretaker role) So I wonder if they would CONSIDER Rooney as player/manager!

FM and BK ( plus the board) re-signed him as a player and although we can all see he is not the same Rooney as before I wonder if he has even considered management when his playing days are over which is not too far away.

We brought him back as an "emotional signing" well as of today the goal-posts have changed ( with Koeman gone). The board must see some value
( not just to sell shirts) in having him back so he cannot be a complete liability.

Finally, for those who are still reading and not still rolling on the floor in fits of laughter remember a certain Howard Kendall was re-signed as a player/manager and he did not do too bad plus look across the park and they did the same with Dalglish. I understand totally different times and football has moved on. In fact, I cannot remember the last any top club appointed a player/manager.

As I have previously said, this is just tongue in cheek and please do not take it too seriously! Let's leave that to the board.

I've been championing Unsworth to take over the reins for a few weeks now. But I now worry it's too soon for him.

He's doing such a great job with the youth team that to take him away could be counter-productive. I would hate to see him fail and therefore lose him from the club set-up entirely.

Let's make him caretaker manager on an on-going basis with the security of knowing that he can go back into the under-23 set-up if things don't go to plan.

One thing is for sure, he's able to bring through young players with fire in their belly who play with a natural confidence. And we certainly need a coach rather than a hands-off type of manager.

The best moments as an Evertonian are generally those when we are
excitedly discussing the prospect of us appointing someone really special as the new manager. Of course it never actually comes to pass

So the board has finally bitten the bullet and dismissed the hapless Koeman. Hallelujah! Whoever is appointed the new manager of Everton will have a mammoth task on their hands to try to stave off relegation. The club has no centre forward to score the goals required, there is no drive, pace or goals from midfield and the entire defence requires replacing.

There needs to be a full post mortem on the workings at the club. Who was responsible for the club's transfer policy - selling and buying players and identifying and assessing transfer targets? Most of the signings have terrible.

Martinez was criticised for wasting £13 million on Niasse, so who's to blame for wasting up to £154 million on the likes of Stelkenburg, Williams, Schneiderlin, Keane, Martina, Klassen, Sigurdsson, Rooney, Lookman and Ramirez? They can't have been all Koeman's targets? Equally, who agreed and authorised the sale of Stones, Lukaku, Cleverley, Deulofeu and Barry without having adequate replacements brought in? Surely, Walsh, Kenwright and Elston are equally culpable and should go too?

Well done Stephen (519) and others above who have raised the seriousness of the situation facing this team in the coming months. The immediate objective is to grind out whatever points they possibly can in the coming weeks. A combination of truly professional focus and application to the job at hand.
Where people are getting notions of a "tenth placed" finish or thereabouts to the season is beyond me. Is seeing not believing? The evidence so far is clear for all to see. If this current team manages mid table then they will be very lucky. There is as yet no evidence of inventiveness, speed, basic shooting ability to score goals that actually win matches. The defensive capabilities, with the exception of the keeper, are beyond belief in being unable to prevent conceding. A team with no pace in essential areas and no cohesion to do the basics such as passing and movement with purpose. At present they possess all the ingredients for a team to be battling relegation. It is a complete and utter shambles for which heads must role far and beyond Mr K.
Of course, it is early days in the season with a long way to go but so is a marathon and this team shows no signs as yet or being responsive enough to address the threat.
And could we please have a moratorium on references to such as "Big Dunc" when looking at those who should be given further responsibilities without those advocates giving some evidence as to how he (and others of course) have some questions to answer as to their role in this shambles for which they are paid obscene amounts of money?
Playing the game of naming the next manager is perhaps an engaging and understandable activity but again, much as we love our Everton, and have been traumatised somewhat by the current situation we must keep our eyes on reality. We are not one of the great clubs of the English game at present, nor have we been for many years and I have supported this club since being with my dad and brothers at Oldham when we secured promotion to the old first division where we have been ever since. And that I hasten to add is the sole priority in the immediate and shorter term for this season - to ensure that we stay there. How the board assess this and who they appoint to oversee that is up to them but as for us supporters I feel it is batten down the hatches, keep that objective as the priority and hopefully with a new team management team in place to be still able to aspire to a place at the top table because we are still in the room.

Makes me laugh people asking for Tuchel or Silva. We'll get who we get and nobody has any idea how it will turn out. In 2012, especially after the 3-0 reverse to Wigan in the cup, it was 'Moyes Out - get Martinez'. A couple of years later it was 'Martinez Out - get Koeman'. I see the same people that were crying out for Konman and Brown Shoes in the comments above naming their man now. Seriously just admit you've no idea.

These people are just flavour of the month. None of us really know what any of them are like as coaches. More likely than not to come in and fail just as the last two have done. Might as well just give it to Unsworth, at least he understands the fans and will get them organised (incidentally, that's also what I said 16/17months ago).

Can't be done with these flavour of the month types, they're too stubborn with their style of play, and once they get found out everyone knows how to play against them. It's just too easy. Just need someone who can get them organised. Solid foundations (i.e. not 1-0 down after ten minutes every week with an uphill battle to climb), hard to beat at home.

Anthony, (538) I agree with your comments. My concern is the incompetence that sits within our club, is still very much there. Koeman's departure does not change things in that regard. I cannot see real progress until deep rooted almost cultural changes are instigated from the top down. Kenwright and Elstone quite simply have to go.

Will, Brent,

Other contributors have grasped this - I had stated that Koeman was culpable - but just not alone.

The point is that there is a deep malaise at the club that extends way beyond just Koeman and therefore if anyone thinks swapping him out for A N OTHER will solve the problem, then they're deluded and just setting themselves up for more disappointment. We could get the best manager in the world but unless they have the right tools (players, coaches and recruitment) and support then they'll struggle.

Plenty has to change for us to be successful - not just the manager. Good players (and for that good recruiters and recruitment is necessary) would be a fine start - but that isn't going to happen quickly. As I said, we need to accept we're in this for the long haul. And that might just undermine attempts to recruit that top class manager.

Lev 409, I gave my choice days ago, but apparently he's not a big enough name, and his style doesn't suit.

Fits us, what does that mean exactly? Look how many diferent suggestions have been made.
First priority is to get us up the table, I'm not bothered how its done, just win games.

Unless we have top 6 quality players though there's no manager that's going to make us a super team, yes some managers are better than others but its the players that have to perform on the pitch to get the results.

Talking about fits, I don't think Koeman fits any club on the planet!

Stephen 544, no doubt that there is problems in other areas of the club, most particularly at the top but I disagree on a top manager not going to solve the issues at hand.

Firstly, anyone of those top names we can think of will demand full control of football matters, and that probably means Walsh will have to adapt or ship out. The manager is unlikely to want interference from BK or perhaps demand more direct support from Moshiri, which can only mean that BK and his gang will no longer as much say in it.

While this is definitely difficult to imagine at the moment, I cannot imagine Moshiri wanting to deal with football matters much more than he does now. Hire a good one and let the system sort itself out. And that makes me think he will try to go for top names who can reshape the system we have. Whether he gets them or not will depend on his desire to make us a winning side.

I remain optimistic about Moshiri, though regardless of who we get, changies at the top and on the field will take time and put us through a lot of pain.

I can't understand the clamour for a big name manager. We have just sacked one for not having a clue how to manage or coach! What we need is someone who can capitalise on the best youth system we have had in years coupled with what will hopefully turn out to be good buying of promising youngsters from other clubs. That has to be our way forward, not wasting another £100m on players who for whatever reason have played poorly.
Unsy can only show whether he can do the job if he is given the chance. Give him a go and see if we really do have one of the best coaches in the country.
I can't quite follow either the people saying Ferguson must follow Ron out of the door. None of us to my knowledge truly know how good or bad he is as a coach and for sure he has had to tow the party line and not say or do anything to undermine his boss. If he has been poor then the club will no doubt usher him out but to assume that is the case is somewhat unfair. Likewise Walsh- ok we didn't get a striker but the squad is far better than the performances suggest and Walsh didn't take charge of training, he didn't pick the team and he didn't dictate the tactics/ formation/ pattern of play.
Let's be fair!

Stephen #544 I was just perplexed by the fact that you could cast the blame so widely beyond Koeman.

"There are lots of fingerprints on this - coaching staff, all the players, the board (they signed the cheques), even us fans."

All coaching staff? All players? All board members? That's some guesswork or some inside knowledge. I see your point but just over-stated maybe?

@Stephen Williams 544 - I wholly agree. There’s something not right with how the club is being managed. Moyes’ last few years were bereft of fresh ideas but he towed the party line for most of the time. Martinez tried but quickly ran into ‘something’, A’s has Koeman. I’m certain Koeman could have made a go of it but chose not to. The question is why? He has to have known the teams he was putting out would get beaten?

The statement from the club read “the board and the major shareholder...” which is not great. Mori soho has become the money man and Kenwright is still running the club. Nothing will change whilst that’s the case.

I wonder if we’ll see some other changes in the not too distant future - may be at board level?

On a specific point ; does anyone else think Keane is a complete dud? Rio Ferdinand bigged him up and his agent spoke of a romantic return to United. We fell for that.
In my eyes he has a very peculiar running style and a physiology generally that doesn’t seem capable of the movements necessary for a quality centre half. He can’t stop and turn right and left swiftly and his passing is simply appalling.( For those of a certain age) when I see him scoop every pass with the ball right under him I think of the football model “Striker” from the 70s.

530 posts. Pretty much all saying the same things. Koeman had to go, Walsh far from the innocent party, but even with a mismatched group there surely was enough to organise, to play people in their correct positions, to setup correctly and use the talent in a solid way ? Sadly the answer is no there wasn't, and when combined with a cold manner that made coping with failure very tough and making friends within the club and with the supporters, it was all too much and tho it's only nine league games the trend is so negative, so destructive, that many could see the signs of relegation even at this early stage.

BUT .it's actually a scary thread to read this and no mistake. Because now it's actually happened we are taking stock of the mess and realising just how bad things are. The squad is not going to be improved until January and then frankly I don't see the highest quality striker or strikers arriving. But we can improve on what we have now. Similarly the defence is a terrible mess. Pickford bring the exception. But how in January do we replace Williams and Jags and cover Mori's long term absence? Keane needs help, urgently, he's really not looking the answer right now but who else is there ?

I can't quite believe that we have gone from June and the excitement felt then, to now. It's not just the team either. New stadium ? Can't see that being as positive as planned as frankly nobody saw us as relegation fighters? Financially we still need those loaning the dosh to see us as a good risk and the LA's previous bullish guarantor stance must be taking a huge hit right now as the risk looks a lot less comfortable all of a sudden ? Cue a delay signing build contracts until end of May next year when the future looks clearer ?

No idea who they will appoint. I don't think Moshiri knows. His man has crashed and burnt and pride will have taken a massive knock. But yet again the club has gone backwards. I don't understand the calls to sack Walsh even tho he is in my view st least 30% to blame for this mess. But if they go for a less proven manager then Walsh and his network will be crucial in getting people to sign for this club. Plus, we are going to take a big hit financially as all thought of Moshiri ploughing in a hundred million net has disappeared for me following the summer window. So, there will be need to be some loss making sales and smaller, clever investment by Walsh. He looks like he's getting a last chance to me and 30 days in January is it.

Meanwhile one of my all time fave blues, Rhino, plus the under stated but I think clever coach that is Ebbrell, are going to be trusted to get us thru a few games, possibly more, and it could just be a relegation saver because if we keep losing then we will be going under by Christmas and the return of Coleman, Bolasie and who knows, Ross B, plus new signings will face a nightmare to recover. Yet this league is so competitive with so few points needed to make a difference, who knows, edge a few wins, be solid, have the fans doing a dogs of war thing .

Brent, (and I'm not arguing here, because ultimately we all want the same thing) I didn't put 'all' in front of coaching staff and the Board, you did (but you might be right!). I did put it in front of the players however (but had previously qualified this by absolving Pickford and Coleman). I stand by my belief that collectively this squad isn't good enough (too slow, too old, lack of mobility, no determination, no killer instinct etc) to deliver the performances we crave. I read today that 4 out of our 5 defenders that started yesterday didn't make a single successful tackle in 90 minutes! Like everyone on here, I don't know which signings were Koeman's, Walsh's or Kenwright's picks. Thinking about my assertion that the players are culpable, maybe I'm wrong. Because is it really the players' fault if they're not good enough? It's not their fault they were signed. However if some think they are good enough then they are culpable.
Whichever way you look at it, there's far more wrong than just the manager.
If we get that top class manager (and I'm struggling to see why one would take us on in our present state) and we're suddenly knocking on the door of the top four, then I'll be delighted and happy to come on here and gladly say I'm wrong. It's just somehow, very regretably, I don't think I will be any time soon.

David # 555 of course it was important but not having a striker isn't the reason for us letting in a shed- load of goals or failing to create many chances.

Chapter 6 was left on the golf course as the information was too muddled for mere mortals to understand. The Chapters 12 to 14, will concern Walsh, BK and Why it was none of my fault. I think we all have to step back from talking about these great foreign managers we should get, the wonderful attacking, high pressing football we are going to play. The "should finish 10th" The guy who should "get Everton"
The absolute and only priority we should have is to try, really try to stabilise the team, drag ourselves out the bottom 3 and not get involved in a dogfight at the bottom.
We can get a fancy dan foreign manager at the end of the season.
I don't care who we employ short term as long as they can get these lazy overpaid arseholes to give 100%, get a system to play that suits them and get us safe.

While I agree (along with the majority) that the decision to part company with RK is the correct one, whomever is appointed to replace him has a massive task before him - near and long term.

First, instill some semblance of belief and desire back into this mentally shattered squad. That alone will be a massive undertaking. I think Unsworth is equipped to do this as he will concentrate on the basics in order to stabilize things on the pitch (i.e., identity, formation, structure, expectations, etc.). He already has the familiarity, respect, commitment and trust of the younger lads. He needs to use them as the basis to right the ship. Sit the underperformers (of which there are many to choose from) until they get their head on straight. If they can't or refuse to do so, plant them in the stands. We are at point now where only warriors willing to work their bollocks off will pull us out of this mess.

With luck (and Board commitment), we will find that striker we desperately need in January. Bolasie and Coleman will be back in the squad by that point. They won't be fully fit mind you but even at 75% fitness they will be miles better than what we have now in their respective positions. Coleman's competitiveness and leadership alone is worth it's weight in gold.

Who knows what will happen with Ross. He seems determined to leave but if there is a possibility to mend that fence, the club needs to do whatever it can and try. He's not perfect and yes he's ticked off many of the faithful with some of his antics but it's clear he and Koeman fell out and this has contributed to the uncertainty around his future. Bottomline, the lad possesses several of the qualities we are in desperate need of. A clean slate with a new gaffer might be what is needed to salvage the situation.

As important as last summer was supposed to be, next summer even more so. We cannot screw that up (again). We are rapidly aging and ill-equipped in key positions and these deficiencies MUST be addressed before the start of next season. That means Walsh (or whomever in charge of player transfers) need to pull their finger out and get on it now.

Mark (530). I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I understand that nowadays, before a manager can be appointed in the EPL / Football League, they have to hold all their coaching badges.

I also think I read somewhere that Rooney is going to take his coaching courses in order to obtain these badges, but doesn't have them yet.

I believe, therefore, that would preclude him from being appointed as player manager, at this stage.

Looking forward now, rather than back, what do we want from a new manager? As has been pointed out before, teams mirror their manager;

Koeman - dour, unadventurous, boring. (Moyes pretty much the same)
Martinez/Klopp - entertaining but lack substance, both clowns.
Mourinho - Schizophrenic!
Kendall/Pochetino - solid, with that touch of class.
Dyche - solid, but lacking the touch of class, so far.
Guardiola - All style, but does he have the stomach for a fight.
Clough/Ferguson/Shankly - Annoyingly effective winners.
Pulis/Allardyce- horrible!!
Marco Silva - Maverick.

So what do we want/need? Immediately, I think we need solid.

Longer term, I want that touch of class that Howard Kendall added to his solid foundation. The eye to spot Trevor Steven and Kevin Sheedy, whilst adding Peter Reid and Andy Gray to provide experience to his youthfully talented team. (Unfortunately, I believe Pochetino is the nearest to a modern Kendall, so that ship has sailed)

I really don't know who is the best longer term option. We've tried an entertainer who lacks substance after years of dour Davey, but we reverted back to type with Koeman. We need to find a manager who gives us that balance between solidity and entertainment, and unfortunately, I think the nearest to that, that may be available, is Benitez.

I understand whenever an American posts, probably about 50% to 60% roll their eyes and think, "what the fuck does the Yank know?"

Regarding Jurgen Klinsmann, I know quite a bit.

If he is even interviewed the Club will be tainted.

He is the single worst manger I've ever witnessed in my "soccer" life. He continually chops and changes, there's no cohesion, and he is an absolute moron when it comes to any tactical aspect of the game.

He can come nowhere near this Club. He would preside over a relegated Everton I guarantee.

I would not even give the man a chance. From day one I'd call for his removal.

Salvation and Hope, and now to start fresh and save this season. How this terrible start impacts, short term and the next couple of years in terms of finance remains to be seen.

Stay up, and save this season and get the players expressing themselves and playing naturally. For me square pegs in round holes and random buying has contributed to the total screw up in football terms this season.

This could only happen on this scale to our team. Even Spurs when they sold Bale, didn't do £150M, in transfers.
Will or can this board learn?

I just do not understand the negatives against Unsworth, we know it is a big step up, but he can only coach and play what he has put in front of him, you can only get experiance by being given a chance short term.

The players will play for him, he coached 4 youngsters to a World Cup winners medal, 5 if you include Connelly and has already beaten the city and Chelsea under 23s who are stocked with Europe’s finest.

Just give the guy a go and see how we do instead of jumping in head first, trying to get our new manager in, if it does not work out, personally I think Unsworth will get this team playing, this guy knows what it means to the fans and how to take on the big guns without setting up for a draw.

I honestly think we have a manager with a winning mentality and made up Unsworth has been given a chance.

Stephen@544: I don't think many (if indeed any) posts on TW have said that simply getting rid of Koeman would 'solve the problem'. Most (perhaps all) know that there are deeper, underlying problems.

Getting rid of Koeman was a necessary but insufficient condition for realising the ambition the club is supposed to have in this 'new era' with Moshiri.

They were all over the place as a team and Koeman just stood there like a deer in the headlights. How can a team start a game in such disarray? This wasn't a one-off as they have been in that mode for most games even the two that they won.

The scary thing is that it may continue the same way at least until January as they only have the same personnel to rely on.

So the 4 Dutch amigos have gone and we can only hope that the interim personnel and subsequent permanent boss will be able to bring in a system that restores confidence throughout the squad and soon.

Eddie (#591), quite. I have posted on here a bit ago that for me, Rafa is our best hope, with Unsworth involved. For the same reasons you post. Additionally, I posted more recently that it just may well be that another job locally becomes available for whatever reason or other soon, and I believe we should act quickly to prevent the humiliating possibility that he chooses to back there over the chance to join us.

A mass clearout is needed, both of the support staff and the playing staff, I have just read an article in the Echo which highlights we have enough players to have had a totally different team out last weekend and had spare players on top. the trouble is, I guess, that if we sell some of the players that have recently been added, we will recover nowhere like the money paid out, if the players will go, as they are likely as not , all on very well rewarded contracts. A mess.

It must be weird for Duncan Ferguson as he has been involved with both the last two regimes but we have always wondered just what he could say or do for the cause. I personally find it a bit sad seeing him putting cones out for the warm-up. Why can't players carry a few bits of plastic?

Someone above said he was BK's snitch in the dressing room. Would he have a proper role with Unsworth, should he get the temporary job? So far it is hard to fathom what input he has.

Well the inevitable has happened but now comes the hard part. Do we go with a sensible option or do we go big name and glamorous?

In light of the predicament we are in; more or less out of the Europa League, probably ignoring the League Cup and in the drop zone with a team which has arguably put in the worst performances of any team in the PL it is imperative we steady the ship and get some basics back on board like passion and organisation.

I think it's the right time for Unsworth to step in for the short term because he knows his way round the players and the club and it would be an opportunity to at least give him until January, with an eye on Dyche to come in at a later date. Imagine him with more funds than at Burnley and (on paper at least) better players at his disposal combined with his PL experience.

Unless I'm terribly mistaken I would think Everton are in advanced talks with those who make up the options (surely we wouldn't simply sack and then start looking) so whoever will come in will also have the next transfer window to add to what we already have - remember what Moshiri said, transfer funds for him are like 'monopoly money'. Cash won't be an issue.

I think this could all be a blessing in disguise and I feel strangely optimistic and excited by it because the Koeman thing wore off very quickly. It's time for that passion, desire, belief to be instilled in the players and for that to be made visible on the pitch - an extension of the manager's true and authentic ethos so to speak and that is only possible with a manager who buys into the Everton spirit and who transmits simple, clear and easy to understand messages to his players because let's be honest and frank about it, losing is one thing but absolutely no idea, fight and passion is simply unacceptable.

The dress rehearsal has failed miserably so now the time has come for some serious business before it's too late and we all look back at yet another Everton false dawn and what could have been...

We as Evertonians get it, it's time those at the helm and the players did as well - NSNO!

Sven, let’s hope so, it can’t get any worse, it’s been the pits, this year, as the last 10 games of last season, we were pretty blight, and in hindsight we are even worse as a squad than last season, so far. It’s the worst football since, Walter Smith.

So, in hope and belief, soon a new regime at coach level will start. Whom it will be,thats the question?

Bielsa – no.

I've championed him on here for years. But he's older now. He's lost his energy and spark. He's having a tough time at Lille.

But he won't come. One he doesn't speak English and there's no time to learn it. Two, he never breaks a contract. Don't give me Lazio, as he argues they broke it and so he had to resign. Unlike Ronnie, he resigned when the board didn't sign the particular players he asked for.

Silva – how's he a maverick? I see him as a young Pochettino. My preferred choice, but I'd rather have given him a season at Watford to prove he can sustain this.

Julian Nagelsmann – I'd never considered him, but just seen him in the frame for the Leicester job. I thought he was taking over Bayern at the end of the season. If he'd go to Leicester, then he'd come to us. And if so, it's no contest. Get the hottest managerial property in world football. Could be another AVB though.

Tuchel – a bit too Maverick, and didn't end well at Dortmund. I think he'd come for sure.

Dyche – really didn't want him. Read a bit more about him, watched a few of his press conferences, he has a lot more humour than I thought and he impressed me a lot in that. I'd be interested to see what happens, but still well down my list.

Ancelotti – would be amazing if he really does want the job, but looks to have lost his fire, doesn't coach so would need to bring someone like Clement in. Not for me really. He's got one eye on Milan and is on holiday for a year to wait for it.

Mancini - no thanks. Overrated in my Opinion. Record is boosted by endless pots of cash.

Moyes - yesterday's man. The ginger one is grey now. And like his hair, he's lost his fire.

Fonseca – went to Russia after failing and has rebuilt well. He wants the job. He knows who we are. So could be a positive. Still a gamble.

Pellegrini – Old, unwanted, but was a fine manager a few years back. His ship has sailed.

Howe - might be sacked, yet considered for us? How's that work?

Allardyce – already made it clear I despise him.

Benitez – I think he's s top manager. I really do. But he's always going to be associated with them. Maybe I can see past that, but first sign of trouble and that's all that we will say about him. He wouldn't last long as a result. That small club jibe still hurts.

If I was in charge I'd approach Fonseca, Silva, Nagelsmann, Tuchel and Ancelotti and see what they say. Meantime, Give Unsworth a chance to stake a claim. If one of those guys want the job, great, get them in. But if not wait some more, if Unsworth isn't doing well, then speak to Dyche.

I'd be speaking to the new manager in the interview about how we can change things With the present squad. No promises of cash, and wait to hear how he can use the squad and youth to build a Champions League side in a couple of seasons, or hear from one of the younger guys how they'd do it slowly over 5 years or so. I'd also ask them why Everton should appoint them, by referencing Kendall and Catterick and test their knowledge of the club. A really interested manager would have done some homework. If they didn't they're not going to get us.

Let's hope the board get it right.

Is 610 comments a record? And nearly all of them consistent in theme which speaks volumes of just what a damaging personality Konman was. Also seeing a lot of the media coming off the wall with some very negative comments, which doesn't surprise me. good to see Greg O'Keefe's first column on the BBC website, we even have our own news box!

I am looking forward to seeing Rhino do the stuff, whether short, medium or long term. I have posted in another report my guess of his team . . . . For the first time in months I don't feel depressed.

A big vote of support and respect to Moshiri. It can't have been easy acknowledging if only by actions, what a mistake he made by appointing Konman in the first place, but hey mistakes are made; its how you deal with them and what you learn from them that counts, and he has been very professional throughout the sad business.

Steven @ 544:

Your implication that I am somehow less able than other posters to grasp your point, neither adds to it nor makes me any more likely to agree with it.

I think it's been well discussed that things might not be as they ideally should be behind the scenes. These for now are points of speculation and hearsay.

Meanwhile out in the factual open, sits a comprehensive record of Koeman's work and its undeniable effects, whatever his playing staff, many known to be his own targets, or whichever players he didn't get. This resulted in his dismissal.

He was the main man responsible for the performance of the team; the Manager. It's impossible to accurately judge the part of coaching staff and players when set against the backdrop of the hard-headed, arrogant, and ultimately incapable manager that Koeman proved himself. He found it ever easier to place blame as time progressed and had he remained, maybe that coaching staff could've had their turn, too.

His fingerprints resulted in his conviction.

9 new players and still short of a striker. Can you say pace and width when we have Vlasic in the middle, Mirallas on the bench, Lennon on the couch, Lookman too naive, Bollasie injured. And none of them of the standard we need. What a mess, we went from too small a squad to too big a squad... or a midfield. We have 8 average midfielders. An ageing defence. Such an oddly shaped squad. £45 million to take the Dead balls. My free kicks are better than his,

Who is the biggest name that is/might be available? Probably Ancelotti or Tuchel. I can see us going approaching them but it's a hard to call to predict if they would be a good fit. We all have our favourites but this is an unenviable task the board have, given the tools we have to offer at the outset. A toolbox missing a few key items.

Ideally Rhino can steady the ship and get us producing short term so we do not rush into this, and do the thorough background work on any potential target which was evidently not the case with RK.

Aside from how he seemed to be doing with Soton, I believe we rushed into that partly because he was being connected with Arsenal in order to nip in front and beat them to 'the prize'.

Certainly dodged one there, didn't they, the Arse.

Delighted that the Board have been decisive and ruthless. I think all successful clubs have/require that trait to win. We now need to show even more ambition and go and seek out the best possible candidates for the job, long term.

I suggested Diego Simone to some of my colleagues and they just laughed at the idea asking why Simone would join Everton. I think that is the issue, nobody takes us seriously or see Everton as having any ambition these days.

If we can pay Koeman a ridiculous amount of money then i'm sure we could do the same to attract the top coaches around the world. I'm fed up of our Club being linked with dross. It's time to go big or go home imo.

Above all else we need a manager for this season who is skilled in the situation we find ourselves.
I don't want a foreign manager who has no experience of the Premier League, its asking for more trouble.
The squad is good enough to climb the table, especially when we get the injured players back and perhaps get Barkley on board.
We need someone experienced that can sort out the mess we are in.

If it was my money that was at risk, Allardyce would be my safe option if he would come.
Other than him, give David the job short term and see how he shapes up. If he does well give him a longer term contract. Risky I know but could be worth the gamble.
Apart from them I think there's issues with most of the others that rules them out but that's only my opinion.

As for any new manager coming in, I personally don't think we should be looking at the 'done-something-on-a-shoestring-budget' candidates, such as Dyche.. not that these guys are not good, solid managers, but we've got a bit of money now, will be spending more soon, and I reckon it takes a whole different sort of manager to deal with 'big' money players.

I know we're not a Man U, players coming in wise, but a case in point was our own Davey Moyes having done so 'solidly' for so long, with little funds, with us then failing so dismally at United with a few 'superstars' to manage!!

Significantly raised expectations also become key in such appointments, and lets not knock ourselves, we are still Everton and just cause the last few guys couldn't hack getting us to where we want to be, we should still be looking for a manager with enough ambition, nous, and genuine drive to kick-start this team and club!!!

It's funny to read all the professional journo's now basically regurgitating the exact same flaws that 90% of posters on here identified weeks, if not months ago. You have to wonder if some ex-pro's actually watch our games when they call for managers to be given more time. Our first league game this season against Stoke, was anti-football, and possibly the worst game I'd witnessed for a good few years. It never really got any better from there.

Given the decisive action of Moshiri - who has now sacked two poorly-performing managers in his short tenure - I am sure the board will already have drawn-up a shortlist several weeks ago.

Votes of confidence are usually issued with the sound of alarm bells ringing in the background.

However, the selection of the next manager is a difficult choice, made even more challenging by the inept spending spree over the summer.

IMHO:

–No first-timers should be entertained (Giggs/Neville).

–This is a job for someone with PL experience as, first and foremost, it is a salvage operation with the need to then kick-on to bigger and better things.

– Strong communication skills and charisma would also be a plus point, given that both appear to have been an issue with RK.

–Financial benefits aside, this is also a job for someone with massive self-confidence and balls of steel because, if they don't succeed within about 18 months (Moshiri's approximate timeline for improvement), they will be fired.

That narrows the field down somewhat but I am not going to add to the carnival of names thrown into the hat.

You never know but an interim like David Unsworth may be around longer than expected.

Let's hope he can do it. I wish him the best of luck!

I have three concerns with Davis Unsworth as our future manager.

He's had almost unadulterated success at u23 level and 1 game as caretaker manager. What does that tell us about his ability to manage us out of a bad situation?

His caretaker team selection got a huge lift from debuting three u23 lads and playing at home on the last game of the season. He won't have those luxuries every week.

Now, he gets simple questions to answer when he meets the press. Will he succumb to the pressure when he's defending his decisions after a loss and will he be able to stay positive during those times?

Plus, he's everyone's favourite uncle as our u23 manager and I would be sad to see that change.

They say you have to be prepared to win. I don't think I am if that risks seeing Unsy fail.

Eddie @ 591

"For me Benitez is the obvious choice... he lives on The Wirral and is a good organiser . We could nick him off the magpies as they are having a takeover and Benitez may either not get the money for players or the new owners may want their own manager.
Whatever the past, he is good at his job, he is a communicator and it would piss off a lot of our Red chums. "

Well, I hope the board do not follow your approach and rationale for selecting a manager.

There are lessons to be learnt from Moyes, Martinez and Koeman.

Moyes - "Knife to Gunfight" and a plethora of other dour, down playing comments which turned us into big game chokers.

Martinez - "I will get you into the Champions League" rapidly became a stream of incoherent babble, culminating in his celebration of reaching two cup semi finals despite the disastrous league showing.

Koeman - where do we start? From the infamous episode where he said Lukaku should move to a big club, to talking up the RS, to trying to down play our ambitions this season.

Benitez has form in deriding Everton's status, and would need to do some major back tracking to convince me he will not be any different to our last 3 managers if the going got tough.

If this board has real ambition, the next guy needs to be prepared to fall on his sword if he cannot deliver top 4.

Enough of this patronizing nonsense from managers who are happy to pick up a fat cheque but not willing to stick their neck on their line to re-assert our status.

Enough of the board getting carried away by the rhetoric (Martinez) or the reputation (Koeman); instead, they must appoint someone with the determination and will to drag the playing side of the club out of the mediocre-is-good-enough-as-they-have-not-won-anything-recently mindset.

I agree Amit get Rafa in before Liverpool do.

Raymond no all my own thinking.. fair enough that we're in the bottom 3 at the moment but I wouldn't call it a relegation battle..i wouldn't like big Sam's style of play anyway near Goodison..if we were 5pts adrift of 4th from bottom in February maybe..
We are 6pts from 7th in October.

Sean Dyche is still the bookies favourite to take over - this fills me with sadness and dread. His team has scored 8 goals this season, to our 7. Small time manager. Fuck that, we need a winner.

James I get your doubts on Dyche but to use Burnleys goals as an example isn't really a telling example
Obviously you think they should have scored more goals but how many were you expecting from them after playing City Chelsea and Spurs away. Have you even checked their fixtures because they have been tougher than ours (given both squads) and have scored more goals.
The more I write here the point your making sounds worse mate.

Rafa fans get a grip. Why do you want a manager you already know can't win Everton the league even with a great squad. The man loses the plot under pressure
I can't believe I have been reduced to reffering to Rafa fans on TOFFEEWEB. Everytime we speak of change his name sadly comes up.
Now before everyone jumps on the league shout I am not saying the next manager will but I i don't want a man who can't.

Joe, I think pretty football is an Ideal, but as I said earlier we have not the quality of players and probably never will have to beat your City et al trying to match them playing their type of game.
Martinez tried it, yes we scored a decent number of goals but only at the expense of stretching our defence to breaking point.

I don't think we are in a position to be too choosy on style, we have to play them in a way they don't like, at least for now.
If we can get top 4 then we will be able to attract the next level of players, that is if our owner/s are willing to find the money to do so!

Paul - you may be right about my small point. The wider point for me is that Dyche is a 'lower than us' team manager, which I don't think is what we should be going for.

Moyes was the same, so was Martinez, and to an extent so was Koeman. We need to be aiming higher up the scale in my view.

I feel like a lone voice on here at the moment, Paul. It seems the majority see Dyche as a good 'fit'. Whatever that means.

James, I have to be honest mate I don't see how he's not another version of Moyes and Martinez.

Plus if Moshiri wanted the big name then he can't get anyone from the Premier League except maybe Silva and Why change your belief to a smaller name?

If Dyche is a good fit, the ambition of this club and fans will never change. I don't tend to use them football friendly phrases without interpreting what a good fit is.

Lads, we need to dispense with the sentimentality here! Duncan Ferguson as a suggestion for Manager or Assistant. He is obviously part of the problem! Everton need a “real” Manager and not someone who we remember for scoring a few great goals. Let’s face it Dunc is remembered more for his physicality than his ability. He wouldn’t lace the boots of Latchford,Sharpe,Gray or even Lineker. Unsworth is a good choice at present but does he have the ability to manage Everton? I’m not convinced. I’d be happy to have him as No.2 but I don’t know who’s capable of being No.1.

Amit Vithlani - Rafael did (inexplicably) win the Champions League for Liverpool though didn't he? Undoubtedly a good manager, in spite of not being able to overcome the likes of Fergie's Man Utd or mega-money Chelski for the league. I know the small club jibe etc, but it's water under the bridge and tit-for-tat. Don't underestimate him - I think if he hadn't been Liverpool manager (but achieved a CL with another similarly ranked club to them at that time) a lot of our fans would be calling for him.

Steve Ferns does make some excellent points at #609 though, I feel.

In my heart I think we'd all most like Unsworth to succeed, hopefully he'll get a chance to impress us further. Whoever gets it ultimately, let's all get behind them and accept there will be mistakes now and then. A good manager will learn from them. Our players need full support, especially while we're hampered in certain positional areas. Let's not lynch the new man too soon. Until it consistently drops to Koeman-esque levels of performance that is!

Gerry, spot on. How in God's name that overrated " legend", who has been present at every disaster for years, actually gets a living from this club is beyond me. He deserves sacking as much as Koeman.

In my younger and more foolish years I, cretinously, enjoyed his sad, macho posturing. He has earned a living for years. No club with a modicum of ambition would have him near the first team.

But seriously, I think a look to the squad would be informative. In very general terms I think we have a fair squad, certainly at least mid-table. It's just a bit lobsided and lacking in key positions. Of note central defence and centre attack.
I think the switching around of players and tactics means they clearly didn't know what they were supposed to do!
Steady the ship Unsie and play to our strengths and the oppositions weaknesses. Fancy tactics are 3 or 4 years away from this squad. I'm not saying we should shy away from modern tactics, but the squad lack confidence and cognition of higher order playing for the near future. The kids are brilliant and are natural heirs to the title school of science. They just need a steady hand for the near future.
I hope Unsie is that steady influence, the new Cat.

Back in La La land. No one has mentioned Klopp. I admit he has been a bit of a twat at the RS. But I really liked him at Dortmund and he will be available in January, a bit before actually.

I wonder what your RS friends might think of this option ? 😆

Chris 667,
I will not be able to refer him as Rafa Beneathus anymore. One less joke.

By the way, didn't he refer us as small club twice, at Mordor and also at Newcastle?

It was for me the pre-season when I realised we were in trouble. Barely scraping through against lacking Dutch sides and then, when it was announced that Geri Deulofeu was on his way, I lost my excitement about what we could do this season.

If this was Koeman's doing, which I believe it was, then he let one of the best wingers we've had in years go for next to nothing. I at that point was 100% sure we were up the creek! I hope someone had the sense to put a buy-back clause in that contract of sale but that would mean someone at the club would need to have raised their head and asked a sensible question.

The purchases made, who what and why was this so bad? Why take so long to get looking for a striker? Why not get a left-back to cover Baines knowing we've the potential for so many games? I hope some of these younger guys come good.

Surely someone somewhere in the backroom could've grabbed Onion Head and told him whats what... or did they all think he was a bellend and wanted him out? Mirallas actually congratulated Gueye as he came off the other night, so maybe they've just been working hard to get rid of a bad egg!
